Probably something more recent from him rather than the old look. Not that I ever really considered his looks to necessarily be costumes as much as outfits.

Something that's not stereotypically black gang member.
If he does have a costume, hopefully they base it off of this:

A yellow T-shirt, a pair of jeans, a cool looking belt and some sunglasses - that'll do.

Yeah, I'd be perfectly happy with the t-shirt look myself.

How would you explain Cages fondness of the outfit?

I like the Marvel Now version as a costume but jeans, t-shirt, leather jacket, & shades for just street wear.

Something like this would be ideal:

The outfit, not the model, obviously.

I was reading an article that mostly was comparing the traditional portrayal of Luke Cage to Bendis's portrayal. However, Part 2 makes a good defense of the traditional costume (at least, if they go the Heroes for Hire route):

Quote:
Luke Cage is a hustler in the most positive interpretation of that word. He’s a street entrepreneur. It’s central to his character. After all, the title of his original series was Luke Cage, Hero For Hire. He’s the type of guy who is always looking for the angle. He’ll search for a way to make the most of his present circumstances, while keeping one eye on the horizon for the next opportunity. The above scene from the first issue of Luke Cage: Hero For Hire was his “I-shall-become-a-bat” moment. It was not only the first time he put on his costume, but it established that from the outset, Luke was a savvy businessman who intuitively understood the power of marketing.

Through the years, readers have mocked Luke Cage’s metal headband and yellow shirt with the butterfly collar, but Luke was always in on the joke, too. Luke recognized that superheroes were popular, and with his newfound abilities, he could capitalize on the public’s fascination with them to make money. He knew the costume was “hokey” the moment he put it on, but also knew he was selling the image of a superhero that anybody could hire. If that was his image — his brand –then he needed to look the part. Therefore, Luke used his meager reward money to satisfy his most immediate need for accomodations and then INVESTED the rest into funding his innovative business venture as a hero for hire. Without a bolt of cloth made from unstable molecules or Peter Parker’s sartorial skills, he bought a combination of off-the-rack pieces and assembled a makeshift costume.
Part 1 is an interesting read for some discussion of what makes Luke Cage the character he is. But it wasn't really on point for this topic, so I'll just leave it as a link.

That's pretty much what I think, an athletic shirt, though maybe one with a bit more interesting an original design than just flat yellow, but that's not necessary. I pictured him seeing it as a marketing image, the yellow shirt makes him stand out and he buys them in bulk as his "uniform" for his Hero for Hire business. Something simple, practical, and unique

I'm totally fine with Cage never wearing a costume, and at some point he'll simply wear a yellow shirt.

Luke Cage 'costume' in the comics was barely even a a costume for a good reason.

Cage wore the yellow short and headband costume as a marketing gimmick. Beyond that reason there was never really a need for him to wear a costume.

It isn't like Luke Cage needs to dress a bat to scare his enemies or needs a suit of armour to protect himself. The lack of a real costume suited Luke Cage man of the people character. Cage is a hero who could walk down your local street and you can talk to him. Cage isn't one of those slightly removed superheroes.

No need for cage to have a costume. Leave that to DD and iron fist.

I do think he should have a bit of a costume. Just some small elements that go beyond everyday dress. He could have the CAGE belt or a chain belt, arm bracers, fingerless gloves, unique boots and things like that.
