I like Cap: First Avenger more than Winter Solider and Civil War.

The Wolverine was like watching some whack sequel to the Age of Innocence set in Japan.

It makes Origins look like Inglorious Basterds.

Out of curiosity, I thought Batman Begins is highly regarded. Why do you think it's underrated?

And yeah, I don't have a lot of nice things to say about First Avenger beyond its cast and Alan Silvestri's theme song, but I think it is interesting it does have a lot of defenders on this board.

I'm glad to see the First Avenger getting love in this thread. I still think it's the best solo origin of any CBM. Even if it isn't your favorite or Cap isn't a particular favorite of yours, I appreciate that so many Hypesters see the charm in that film.

Because when people bring up Nolan's Batman movies they usually talk about the last two. I hardly see people praise or even recognize Batman Begins outside of the geek fandom.

Indeed, the First Avenger is definitely a favorite of mine. I like it because it has a strong cast with a highly likable protagonist at its center. In my opinion, the film does a very good job of introducing us to Steve Rogers, getting us to understand who he is as a person, and getting us to root for him as he makes his journey to becoming a soldier and, later, to becoming Captain America.

Watching Steve gradually become Captain America over the course of the film is rewarding because the movie makes us like him as a person and care about his goals/desires. He wants to enlist because he cares deeply about other people; he cares deeply about his country; and he doesn't like to see bullies preying on the weak and the innocent. There's no question about what his motivations are, and it makes it easy to root for him.

In addition to all of that, I like the movie's Indiana Jones-like aesthetic and atmosphere, with a lot of colorful adventure and some cool mythical elements thrown in. That made it even more enjoyable. And I also like that Haley Atwell's Peggy Carter was a strong, well-written character who had a lot to do in the film and had a strong rapport with the protagonist.

I’ve seen folks praise BB more consistently than TDKR. I think it’s safe to say that, for most people, the latter is considered the worst of the trilogy (which doesn’t mean it isn’t good or well-regarded; just not typically considered the favorite).

The answer is Spider-Man 2 (2004).

Now before you start to reply "everyone loves Spider-Man 2 and its not underrated", I disagree. Spider-Man 2 is the absolute most perfect comic book movie of all time. It was the perfect blend of drama, comedy, action, adventure, and an incredible romance story. Basically, Spider-Man 2 should be ranked over The Dark Knight on everyone's list, imo. Not that TDK is overrated, just believe Spider-Man 2 should be hailed as the best cbm of all time.

Raimi's Spider-Man films are the definition of overrated imo.

I'm talking in general not just quality. People still talk or reference (whether good or bad) about the latter two movies more than BB.

I'm with Kane. I think BB is superior to TDKR but the latter seems to get a whole lot more praise especially with it's numerous faults.

It's also more rewatchable than Rises.

I see your point and that's fair.

I don't think most people consider it the worst. I think most comic book fans do. But most non-comic reading moviegoers tend to recall when you mention the Nolan Batman movies TDK vividly, and TDKR well enough as the one with Tom Hardy's Bane and Anne Hathaway's Catwoman. I do think it had a bigger impact in the culture (it also made a lot more money and was seen by a lot more people, which might be a big part of this).

I like them both for the record. I used to prefer Rises, but now they're pretty even in my estimation with different benefits and flaws.

I don't think Begins is close to being the most underrated, but I'd probably place it in that category as I personally think it's the best of the TDKT.

For superhero films I used to say Unbreakable, but I don't know if that's true anymore. For comic book films in general I'd go with Road to Perdition, not just because it's a great movie that isn't discussed a lot, but because not many people know it's based on a comic.

Because the other two movies have Joker and Bane, easily the two most memorable characters of the series.

I am of the opinion that if Begins never gets a sequel it wouldn't have been a revered classic regardless.

I think an equal candidate is Batman Forever. It's not up to the Burton movies but I really like it. It gets lumped in with Batman & Robin (which is full-on ****). I feel that if B&R had never been made BF wouldn't get anything like the hate it does.

You know, I wanted to have that same opinion due to nostalgia, but then I rewatched it a few years ago. Yeah....it is awful.
