So now all the 2016 Marvel related films (Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse and Doctor Strange) have been released now. What are your opinions on each score? And how do each stack up to previous Marvel related film scores?

I voted for Spider-Man 2, because that's the best of the series, but truthfully I'm voting for the entire trilogy.

Toss up between Doctor Strange and Thor: The Dark World. Each got the music pretty much perfect for the story that was being told.

Deadpool - Junkie XL
Aside from droning I wasn't expecting much from Junkie XL, when he signed on. After one viewing of the movie the score failed to leave an impression on me b/c I honestly didn't notice any music accompanying it. I'm not bothering with the soundtrack album to find out. The songs played a bigger role in the movie than the score did anyway. So it didn't matter in the long run it was just an easy paycheck for Junkie.

Captain America: Civil War - Henry Jackman
Even though I thought CA:TWS score was decent and serviceable overall. I still wasn't expecting to be impressed much by Jackman's CA:CW and wasn't unfortunately. On my first viewing the emotional/conflict theme/motif particularly during the climax between Steve, Bucky, and Stark, was the only piece that left a strong impression on me. On my second viewing I noticed variations of the conflict/emotional theme/motif being subtly utilised throughout the film/score. As well Zemo's theme/motif doing the same in his scenes.

X-Men: Apocalypse - John Ottman
I haven't heard the score outside of the movie so I'm going off my first viewing (so far) of the film. Aside from one of the movements from Beethoven's 7th and the recurring themes (X2 main theme and Striker's motif) from previous X-men movies (X2 and DOFP) nothing from Ottman's serviceable score really resonated, imo. But then again most scores these days tend to that on first viewing b/c my attention is usually on the movie to even notice unless it's very conspicuous.

Doctor Strange - Michael Giacchino
Honestly Giacchino's score didn't really stand out on my first viewing. Again when it comes to my first viewing of movies I'm normally focused on the film/story than it's score. I did notice Strange's theme. And that's probably b/c it shared similarities to his main theme from the Star Trek reboot franchise. I guess the score was serviceable in the film. Maybe on repeated viewings I'll appreciate it more, but unfortunately the score didn't leave much of an impression on me.

Honestly none of the superhero scores this year impressed me, which is unfortunate.

I felt that Civil War had more stand out moments musically, but Doctor Strange had stronger main theme that peaked gloriously during his first fight with Kaecilius.

Civil War had:

Zemo's theme
The big airport battle
Tony vs Cap & Bucky
Cap's promise

I still hum the Elfman Spider-Man theme to this day. But as MCU scores go, Avengers Age of Ultron takes the cake. I listen to that at work about once a week.

Thoughts on the scores to Logan, Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok?

Dude, you missed the best one IMO, GOTG ! In addition to its terrific use of rock songs GOTG develops a recognizable theme/motif for our favorite band of rag-tag space adventurers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ4WLvj5ODE

There are some terrific highs and lows during the film, puncutated nicely by the score (e.g. We are Groot )

Having said that I really enjoyed Captain America CW's score, I felt it really soared during the airport fight scene, and had some great emotional notes during the final confrontation between Tony and Steve.

While the Avengers theme is recognizable I find it a bit repetitive - not a favorite of mine.

I actually liked the score for Thor TDW, and found Dr Strange's main theme good (but overall kind of underwhelming for Michael Giacchino, which is suprising).

As for all the other films, none of their scores made an impression on me.

Favorite scores (not just the theme):

1. Danny Elfman's work in Spider-Man/Spider-Man 2
2. John Ottman's work in X2 and DOFP
3. Patrick Doyle's work in the original Thor
4. Henry Jackman's score for X-Men: First Class.
5. Alan Silvestri's work for the first Avengers.

The rest are pretty interchangeable and forgettable to me.

Silvestri put together the best overall score for any Marvel Cinematic Universe film and he doesn't get enough credit for that. None of those stupid YouTube essay videos recognize the quality work for Avengers 2012.

Doyle's work on the first Thor was fantastic...

Which brings me to Mothersberg's score for Ragnarok. I LOVE this score. It's probably my favourite. I love that 8bit 80s arcade style to it. And the fact it has some of Doyle's themes from the first Thor makes it even better. I also loved the reprise of Strange's theme too.

GotG and Avengers have great main themes that stand out.

I do also really like the Iron Man 3 score. "Can you dig it" is a brilliant piece of music.

Silvestri's Avengers theme really is getting iconic status. A1,AoU,Ant-Man,Homecoming, the IW trailer all use variations of it.

Thor has three great scores imo.

Iron Man 3 too.

Taking a Stand from TWS. The main them from TFA.

The Doctor Strange and Homecoming main themes.

Driving with the top down from IM1.

Gotg scores are also great.

Thor TDW actually has a really epic sounding score. The score is better than the movie lol

Ramin Djwadi nailed Iron man in the soundtrack for his first movie. Djwadi should be scoring an Avengers movie yesterday.

GoTG scores are REALLY good, they have a very recognizable, hummable theme.

TWS has the best full album score though hands down. Very good composition throughout.

Christophe Beck's Ant-Man didn't leave much of an impression on me during my first viewing of the movie. However, I rewatched the movie about a month ago and the score resonated with me more. I recently purchased the soundtrack. And have been digging the score, which is a neat blend between 60s/70s Lalo Schifrin-esque heist music and flourishes of the MCU soundscape. Looking forward to how Beck will develop the main theme/score for the upcoming sequel.
