Default Is There Anything Wrong With An Actor that doesn't "Act"?

Some of the most well known and lauded on screen performers from the start of the film industry until today, have less given us reel after reel of highly individualistic performances colored with nuance and more given us a version of themselves in a role. Actor X is a cop. Actor X as general. Actor X as a historical figure.

My question... Is this an issue for yourself as a consumer of film? Which do you prefer and why?

I have no problem with that. Do you really want Michael Fassbender wasting 6 months of his life playing John Wick and Chev Chelios? It's asinine to think every actor needs to be an oscar contender to do genre work.

If he or she and his/her method are right for a role, nothing wrong with it.

Ahnold Schwarzenegger is a great example of an actor who can't act but chooses roles that play to his strengths so no one minds.

It depends on the movie. Will Smith plays himself time and time again and is pretty good at it. Then there's people like Jon Heder who do it and are awful.

Jackie Chan once said in an interview " No one wants to see Jackie sweet-kiss girl. They want to see (makes kung fu motions)"

It depends on what sort of roles they play.

Kevin Costner is another example.

The fact is, there are very few 'immersive' actors left as such, or the art of 'disappearing' into a role as such.

With the majority of actors there is always going to be a part of themselves in what they present on screen in the way of their look, persona or personal narrative. You can't escape that.

A truly great performance is one where you reflect at the end of the film and cannot remember you are seeing actor X as character Y.

For example, Ledger as The Joker in TDK, not once did I think 'that's Heath Ledger playing The Joker', I only saw the Joker.
