Default The DOOMSDAY CLOCK is ticking...

I know there's a Rebirth thread, but I'm thinking this one will make good use of a thread all it's own.

Not reading those, but glad to know it's going well so far. My interest is so high I'm actually driving into the city to pick up a physical copy on Thursday morning.

No spoilers but, like Rebirth, I think folks should read Doomsday Clock before reviews ruin any surprises. @geoffjohns & @1moreGaryFrank are at the very top of their game. The artwork is particularly sublime. There are several pages I’d love to own.
Not getting spoiled is going to be borderline impossible, but goddammit, I'm excited.

I'm picking up the issue tomorrow, but I'm going to have so much trouble avoiding spoilers... Due to work being a bit crazy, I'm only... TWO issues into my Watchmen reread (a very necessary read, since I've only read it once, and that was like 2006 or so).

And I've still got The Button to go.

The Button was enjoyable enough, but I'm glad I trade-waited rather than read it on an issue by issue basis. Issue 1 was literally 90% fight scene, and it wasn't really as much Watchmen/Rebirth as it was Flashpoint, so I did feel a bit misled. But I suppose I should wait until Doomsday Clock is done to see how to feel about The Button within that context.

Loved the first issue! Frank's artwork and Robinson's colours are fantastic. The matte paper is also another great touch.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
So, no surprise Rorschach is not Walter (I guess we can call him Rorschach II now).

I got myself spoiled, though I fully expected that to happen anyway, and I'm okay with it.

Figured Veidt would be the one with the brain tumor. Relieved that Rorschach is a legacy character, rather than the alternative. Also like hearing that the two that Rorschach broke out are based on Charlton villains.

I'm still not sure how I feel about this in general. I hold Watchmen in such high regard that I don't like the idea of someone making a sequel to it -- let ALONE unnecessarily connecting it to the main DC universe. I just don't understand how you can have a story that focuses on deconstruction and connect it to a world that isn't intended to be seen through a realistic lens.

I might pick it up, but I have incredibly low expectations.

I don't think it's unnecessary at all. What was teased in DC Universe Rebirth was a meta commentary on the lasting impact of Watchmen and how that deconstruction started to seep out into the larger universe. It's about the legacy of Watchmen, for better and also for worse.

I think there's a real thesis statement to this book that goes beyond just "Superman and Doctor Manhattan duke it out in a boxing ring".

The mute looked an awfull lot like Bruce. Could he be?

Not much happened in the first book, so I can't say much if it's going to be any good.

Did Rorschach always talk like that? I think they went overboard with that.

Watchman is a stand-alone story. It has no ties to anything. It has a beginning, middle, and an ending. Your reasoning above is actually why I'm a little dubious of Doomsday Clock, especially considering I was pretty underwhelmed by the first issue.

The cynic in me sees it this way: at best, Doomsday Clock is a run-of-the-mill superhero story that goes the way of Before Watchmen - to a realm of indifference. At worst, Doomsday Clock is, and turns "Watchmen" into, a plot point used to creatively explain away piss-poor editorial and creative choices since 2011 and arguably 1987.

I feel like the "This story had a beginning, middle, and end" argument works better when not applied to something created by the same guy who wrote The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I love Watchmen, but I don't consider it sacred so any prequel/sequel/spin-off won't be blasphemous to my eyes.

Did a review of the first issue, and while I don't think Doomsday Clock is going to set the comic book world ablaze like Watchmen did, and is essentially fan fiction, it's still very, very good. And as a sequel to Watchmen and a tie-in to DC, it works surprisingly well, too.

A look at #DoomsdayClock issue #2 coming 12/27 from the great @1moreGaryFrank and @bdanderson13 as the two worlds collide! There will be a month break in shipping after the first 4 issues, between #4 and #5, to keep the quality and page count as high as possible. Hope you dig it!

^ Same. Very much a set-up "don't worry, we can get the tone right" kind of issue. Some good little mysteries established. Looking forward to seeing what comes next.
