Default Why no love and expectations for X3 from the media??

It seems the media like it did for the past X films doesn't expect much from the X3. With MI3 underperforming according to the media all I've heard from them was this may be a sign of trouble for the box office and will movies like Superman or POTC save the slump? I've heard Poiesiden and Da vincci Code get props and expectations for being the big films of the summer, but they don't even mention x3?

That's probably a good thing. Anytime the media touts a movie as the "savior of box office slump" it just does horrible. Look at King King. It was shoved in our faces so much as this huge epic movie by the time it rolled around people were sick of it. I think FOX was smart to delay the marketing as long as they did and give us the bum rush they are now (so to speak) because in doing so they've managed to keep the medioa from overspeculating. Plus I think the media in general underestimates how "fanatical" some of us can be.

Yeah, I've noticed that . . . I think it may be weariness due to the change in the creative team. For example, Newsweek just released an article featuring the top 7 must see movies this summer (among them POTC 2 and Superman Returns), and under the article is another blurb that says something along the lines of, "Wondering why X-Men and others didn't make the list . . . here's our reservations). For X-Men, it was the change in director and creative team holding it back.

Rolling Stone Magazine published a similar article--X3 received about the same response.

well that is the general feel about this movie, anytime I bring it up, people are like "eeehhh, I'll wait for the review", it's like most people know that the people who did the first two are doing superman returns, and when I bring up superman, people are excited about those films........

top 5 movie, money wise this summer, imo

Superman returns
Pirates
Cars
Da Vinci Code
Posiodan

x3 will be in the top ten, probably like 8th or so

Yeah right. I bet it will beat Poisoden for the fifth spot.

I doubt Poseidon will make more than $140 million, if that...

There are only two to three films that have been receiving plenty of buzz. Most of which started last year. MI:3 of course, Davinci (I'm tired of hearing about it) and Pirates 2. X-men and Supes seem to be flying under the radar somewhat. I hope that's not a sign that Mr. and Mrs. John Q. are tiring of CB movies.

I barely see any real advertising for X3 quite frankly. There are more adds/commercials for Davinci than anything else. There's only spattering of X3 here and there--more like sitings of X3 commercials.

Poseidon will bomb I believe. I mean come on! How can they top Shelly Winters' underwater swimming scene from the original?

I don't agree. I think SR will be number one with POTC at two and X3 at three. The box office can be tricky, and truth be told SR is going to do well because it's Superman and not because Singer took over. While the Xfilms under Singer were good they weren't great. Singer just doesn't have the imagination for this material, and SR looks to be the same way judging from the newly released trailer. Now I'm confident that SR won't suck, but it isn't going to a great movie. I just can't get excitied for a rehash with today's fx.

Now i don't know how good X3 is going to be cause i'm not sold on the writers despite the trailers looking good. I think Posiden is not going to be this huge movie. it looks good and I'll be there, but something tells me this film open with 20-25 million on opeining weekend and top off between 80-110 million domestically. Cars will do well, and will easily make over 200 million. Da Vincci Code will do well. I'm not sure of the take. i'm thinking 175 million domestic take, but it could easily do 200-250 if it exceeds my expectations. We'll all have to wait and see when the summer is over to see who was right and wrong.

I think X3 will do better than Poseidon and Cars for sure...Da Vinci will definitely give the mutants a run for their money....and the jury is still out on Superman. But I don't think X3 will be able to topple POTC2

Here's the Newsweek article:

OK, You've Almost Sold Us
How could we leave out 'X-Men'? Didn't we hear the kinda good buzz on 'Poseidon'?! More worthy movies—and our reservations.

X-Men: The Last Stand: In installment three, the X-Men are tempted to abandon their powers when a pharmaceutical company comes up with a cure for their mutant gene. Nagging question: Can Brett Ratner effectively replace Bryan Singer, who jumped ship for "Superman"? MAY 26

Link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12551604/site/newsweek/

Haha . . . actually, come to think of it, the summary of the movie is less than inspiring--the pharmaceutical bit sounds kind of funny at second glance.

I think that the general public doesn't know about "perception problems" or change of director (no one I know goes to movies because of who the director is unless it's a big name like Spielberg - MAYBE) and will go because it's another X-Men movie and they enjoyed the other ones.

I've said this before as well, and people who try and make an issue of it, especially in the media who are no doubt trying to sink the film with bad press especially if the media source is owned by a rivel studio. Time Warner has a huge media entertainment presence. I'm not saying that WB doesn this for sure ,but a bias is there. Superman is not going to do Spiderman numbers, that much i can say.

This is all nonsense really. Most people out there aren't aware of 'creative teams' moving, or even of directors changing.

That Newsweek article was irresponsible to be honest. And I shall be telling them so. They obviously haven't seen the trailers, they don't mention the star cast (Kelsey Grammer's superhero debut, as well as Vinnie's), they don't get the summary entirely right and what a bland summary it was.

Just because one person is able to publish their opinion in Newsweek as a reviewer of summer movies does not make them an expert or an authority.

Regardless of whether its simply someone's opinion, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, etc. are heavily read, widespread publications and can influence people.

I don't know if I would go so far as to call the article irresponsible, as though they have some sort of responsibility to X-Men--I would hardly call Kelsey Grammar a box office draw to most people, nor Vinnie Jones (most people don't even know who Jones is and he has hardly done anything worthy of receiving the title All-Star).

As far as the summary is concerned . . . that's what FOX is billing it as, and is not the fault of Newsweek. I agree they should include more in the summary . . . at least an allusion to Jean Grey's return and the consquences it may have.

It seemed irresponsible in its presentation. How were the top films decided? On what quantitative evidence? And the addition of those little snippy 'nagging thoughts' asides to the other films, as though the fact that Brett stepped in to rescue the movie was not a good thing! Bryan abandoned X3, let's not forget that. The trailers all look good (did the article mention that, no!).

Kelsey and Vinnie are certainly worthy of publicity and will be names people know. It's an amazing turnaround for Kelsey to go from Frasier to a classic comicbook character.

The summary was bland and bad. No mention of a final conflict, no mention of the power of evolution at its terrifying peak (Phoenix). It was not a good representation of the movie.

I consider Brett to be rescuing this franchise and doing us a favour. Let's not forget all the amazing things we've seen so far in the trailers and TV spots that are all over the place. This movie has potential to be great. The reviewer chose to focus on negatives and make it sound bland.

Amen. I'm not going to lie, cause I'm worried as i've said many times about Simon Kinberg taking up the writing duties. I'm not so much concerned with Penn as much as Kinberg. The writers are my main fear. Even with that being said I think X3 looks better from the previews i saw then the stuff that Singer did. Well know soon if X3 is a quality film. My personel opinion and i've never said it until now. I think for me at least that I'm going to be disappointed due to the story. I'm fine with ratner as director.

At least we get some hot chicks. Would Dania Ramirez be as hot looking if Singer was at the helm? No, she wouldn't have even been cast, and the girls playing arclight and psylocke. Halle looks better too. One thing I've noticed about Superman is that Singer have managed to make Kate Boswroth look unattractive, especially with that horrible wig.
