Quote:

Nintendo has announced a new Nintendo 2DS bundle for the holiday shopping season. When Yo-Kai Watch comes to the Nintendo 3DS family, people will be able to purchase the game alone for $39.99, or in a bundle that includes a red Nintendo 2DS for $99.99. Normally, this version of the handheld is $99.99, thanks to a price drop back in August.

The Yo-Kai Watch Nintendo 2DS bundle will include a copy of the game. However, it is a digital download that will arrive pre-installed on the system. People will be able to immediately boot the Nintendo 2DS up and start playing the game.

Yo-Kai Watch will be released for all Nintendo 3DS platforms on November 6. The bundle will be available that same day.

Yo-Kai Watch Manga Samplers Being Given Away For Halloween ComicFest. October 28, 2015 . 10:11pm

People can get a Yo-Kai Watch manga sampler from retailers participating in Halloween ComicFest this Halloween.

Quote:

Instead of candy, some stores are going to be giving children reading material this Halloween. It’s part of a Halloween ComicFest promotion, where participating retailers will offer free comics and samplers of series for visitors. Viz Media has confirmed that a Yo-Kai Watch manga sampler will among the materials distributed.

The Yo-Kai Watch manga sampler will be an original creation for Halloween ComicFest and will act as a teaser for the series written and drawn by Noriyuki Konishi. It’s inspired by the Level-5 game of the same name, and the initial images shared by Viz suggest it will show how Nathan and Whisper meet Jibanyan, the nekomata.

People can check the official Halloween ComicFest website to see if any stores near them will be participating on October 31. Yo-Kai Watch is part of Viz Media’s Perfect Square line and the first volume will release on November 3 for $9.99.

Yo-Kai Watch Tactfully Handles The Existence of Yo-Kai. November 3, 2015 . 1:30pm

Yo-Kai Watch introduces Yo-Kai in such a way that it won’t scare younger players and makes the premise plausible for older ones.

Quote:

Level-5’s Yo-Kai Watch is a Pokémon style JRPG, but there are a few differences. One is that people are dealing with supernatural spirits that can influence human behavior and be befriended, and the other is a setting that’s more similar to the world we actually live in. Combine the two and people are faced with a situation that might be a little unnerving for some younger players. It’s a number of deliberate design decisions that make the interactions with these otherworldly creatures more comforting than horrifying.

The Yo-Kai hunting element is a perfect example of Level-5’s low-key approach. While there are random battles in Yo-Kai Watch, should a player venture into a back alley or through a gate when their watch level is high enough, most fights are entered into when a player decides. Early on, the game compares the search to a bug hunt, which both Nate and Kate are doing for a school project. By starting out by offering a similar, more harmless comparison, it’s less jarring when someone seeks out a Yo-Kai and finds a battle. Yes, the Yo-Kai are always around, but odds are they won’t go after you unless you disturb them first.

In the cases where Yo-Kai are interacting with mortals, Level-5 builds up danger gradually. There can eventually be some severe situations, but the initial encounters tend to be more mischievous. The first major case I saw involved Kate’s parents. They’re engaged in a fight over her father not contributing when it comes to household chores. Whisper goes out of his way to explain that sometimes that happens with married people, they can fight and still love each other, before revealing that this particular disagreement was exacerbated by Dismarelda. Some of the first side-quests involve a Dimmy making a classmate named Shelly seem invisible to her friends and the presence of Dulluma, Coughkoff, and Snotsolong at a school are making children and teachers feel ill when class is being held.

Perhaps most important is that the player characters Nate and Kate don’t “catch” Yo-Kai, they befriend them. This instills a sense of security. While these figures may have means of influencing behavior, they still possess human characteristics and tendencies. If someone takes the time to interact with them, through battles, helping with tasks, or providing them with food, they could take a liking to someone. It implies that there’s a stronger bond between Yo-Kai and humans than Pokémon and people.

It should prove reassuring for younger players. People know Pokémon isn’t real. The locations and characters are fantastical, futuristic technology abounds, and it stars a bunch of grade schoolers given free reign to travel the country without adults, facing terrorist organizations. But Yo-Kai Watch’s characters are rooted more deeply in Japanese mythology and based upon ghosts and supernatural creatures. Pokémon may attack people in wild grass, but the Yo-Kai are everywhere and going after everybody.

I know I’m making it sound like Level-5’s approach is more about making Yo-Kai Watch more comforting for children, but there’s an added bonus to caution implementation and additional explanations. It makes for stronger storytelling. Yo-Kai are shown to be supernatural characters with human-level intelligence and behaviors. It wouldn’t make sense for them to be captured and treated like pets. And think about it – if you knew your very presence could have some sort of effect on people around you, wouldn’t you be tempted to make use of your abilities every once in a while? The manner in which they’re found, interact with the world, and behave after getting to know the avatar make the game’s premise more plausible.

Yo-Kai Watch will come to the Nintendo 3DS on November 6.

Battles Have Unexpected Depth In Yo-Kai Watch. November 5, 2015 . 1:30pm

Think of yourself as the Yo-Kai commander when entering into a battle in Yo-Kai Watch. It may seem very “hands-off,”
but you still have important things to do.
Quote:

If you played the Yo-Kai Watch demo, you may have noticed it offers something of a hands-off approach. The team is already set for Nate. The characters act of their own volition in a fight. All a player seems to do is shift the dial to determine which three appear in battle, pin a target, or participate in a brief minigame so one will unleash a Soultimate attack. Trust me when I say there’s more to it than that.

First, characters appearing in battle all belong to different classes, with each class specializing in certain things. The Charming class has swift attackers like Cadin and Jibanyan, two of the first Yo-Kai players will recruit. Eerie characters like Dismerelda and Coughkoff, two other Yo-Kai that will be among the first recruits, rely heavily on inflicting status effects. The other classes include Tough, Brave, Shady, Heartful, Mysterious, and Slippery. If you’re going into a boss fight, having a Tough Yo-Kai like Robonyan can help, since his Soultimate attack boosts defense and makes enemies target him. Setting up the right team is important and going with whoever you get first won’t help much in the end-game.

I won’t deny that letting the characters do their own thing in battle is probably for the best. But coordination going into a fight is key. For example, on my dial I have Cadin and Jibanyan next to each other, because they’re both Charming types. This boosts their speed. Robonyan is next to them, since I usually have those three appearing first. If the enemy they’re facing is exceptionally strong or a boss, I’ll switch in my three Eerie class characters, Dismarelda, Coughkoff, and Buhu, so they can inspirit the enemies and lower their abilities. Then, I shift back to what I like to call my “cat” team and let them go to work.

Using Soultimates like crazy isn’t advised. You can, but it isn’t really necessary. In most ordinary encounters, you’ll find the battle almost over by the time the minigame is finished. It’s really most helpful for bigger battles, and the key is to know what each Soultimate attack is capable of. As I mentioned earlier, I use Robonyan as a tank. Guard Meowde protects him, while his Steel power Inspirit increases the defense of all allies. This attack, as well as Dismarelda’s strength-sapping Dismartillery, are best to use at the start of a battle. Jibanyan’s offensive Paws of Fury is best saved for a mid-battle or finishing strike.

Not to mention, Pinning can end up being one of the most effective tactics in a Yo-Kai Watch player’s arsenal. In the demo, it basically tells people to use it to target a specific foe. It doesn’t say why this is important. In the case of some bosses, you may notice one part of their body may take more damage than others. Pinning that part directs your Yo-Kai friends’ attacks. In an ordinary match, you might see a Yo-Kai you want to befriend. Tell your team to target another enemy, then toss some food to it in order to hopefully put that foe into a better mood. Sometimes, wisps might even float across the field. Jabbing a pin in them during a fight will offer some sort of reward. (Hope for the one that makes enemy Yo-Kai a little more friendly!)

I guess the best way to think of the Yo-Kai Watch battle system is more of a real-time strategy interface than a traditional RPG affair. You’re the commander directing the flow of battle. You can purify allies who were inspirited by enemies, so they’ll be effective again, determine targets, send in provisions and supplies, and direct special attacks. But, since you aren’t actually doing any of the attacking yourself, you can’t go and directly tell your people what to do. It makes sense, when you think about it.

It’s also often unnecessary. Yo-Kai Watch offers a number of side quests. These completely eliminate the need to level grind. If someone wants, they can only enter into a battle when they see the on-screen Yo-Kai is someone they haven’t befriended yet. Enough experience can be gained from supplemental actions to prepare the group for boss battles. In this way, people who aren’t fans of the battle system can still enjoy the game and keep up without feeling forced to participate in activities they don’t enjoy.

Yo-Kai Watch comes to the Nintendo 3DS tomorrow on November 6.

Yo-Kai Watch Can Be Sort-Of Sociali . November 16, 2015 . 1:30pm

Yo-Kai Watch is mostly a solo experience, but you can also battle locally, StreetPass to meet others’ Yo-Kai,
or and redeem QR Codes found by watching the anime or collecting medals in the Crank-a-kai.

Quote:

For the most part, Yo-Kai Watch is a single player experience. You go around Springdale as Nate or Kate, making friends with all the Yo-Kai and helping everyone with their problems. However, there are some elements that allow people to interact with other players, in a way.

For instance, Yo-Kai Watch is compatible with the Nintendo 3DS’ StreetPass function. If you enable it and go past someone else with the game, their Yo-Kai may show up in your Wayfarer Manor. I’ve only StreetPassed three people with the game, so I haven’t experienced all of the possible encounters, but it seems like most Yo-Kai who come to visit either want to briefly battle or give you an item. So far, I’ve only received minor things like food or medicine. However, there is a chance that you can befriend these traveling Yo-Kai if their Rank is between B and E.

You can access the Wayfarer Manor after getting access to the Heights area, after about 4 hours of playing the game. It could take longer to reach that milestone, however, if you’re grinding or taking on a lot of side quests.

It is also possible to participate in local multiplayer battles in Yo-Kai Watch. These proceed in the same fashion as the single player matches, only you’re using ad-hoc wireless to battle a friend in the same room as you. This is triggered by heading to the Lambert Post Office near Nate and Kate’s homes. Visit one of the clerks to set up the match. You will be ranked based on your performances and receive items, but individual matches won’t provide significant rewards.

There’s also the Yo-Kai Cam, though I hesitate to call it social. If you use this feature, you can take a picture of someone’s face. (Animals’ faces won’t register.) You will then “catch” a Yo-Kai that represents that is “tied” to that person. Reaching certain hallmarks in terms of caught Yo-Kai will result in rewards that can be claimed from the Lambert Post Office. However, you don’t need to take pictures of different people. Taking about 10-20 pictures of yourself will do just fine.

Finally, there are all the means of earning coins for the Crank-a-kai machine next to the shrine. You can use three coins in the machine every day. Coins can be found in-game, via inputting passwords at the post office, by scanning in QR codes, or by paying 10 Play Coins for one. You have a random chance of getting a great Yo-Kai from these coins or mediocre items. It’s worth doing, as that’s how I ended up getting a Rank B Benkei and Rank A Robonyan. It also makes watching the anime series worthwhile, as a QR code for the game appears every episode. QR codes are scanned in at Piggleston Bank, while Play-Coins can be exchanged immediately at the Crank-a-kai.

There’s a Crank-a-kai trick you can use to try and ensure you only get Yo-Kai with your coins. Save at the shrine before you use the machine. Then, go there and try using a coin of each color. Make a note somewhere if one color coin does give you a Yo-Kai. Reload your prior save, then go and use that coin. You’ll get the Yo-Kai. Save, then test two other coins that are of a different color than the ones you used before. Each real world day, Yo-Kai Watch determines which prizes will be doled out for coins. You can walk away every day with a new friend.

Yo-Kai Watch is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS.

6 Yo-Kai Watch Party Members To Keep In Mind If You’re Ever In A Bind. November 30, 2015 . 1:30pm

There are over 230 Yo-Kai to make friends with in Yo-Kai Watch, but these six could prove especially helpful.
Quote:

When it comes to Yo-Kai in Yo-Kai Watch, there are certain characters that are better than others. The best creatures are found in the end-game, of course, but it’s possible to come across more than a few potential party members that will enhance the rest of the game for you, perhaps making the overall experience easier.

For example, Baddinyan can be a great character that sticks with you throughout much of Yo-Kai Watch. He’s pretty easy to acquire too. Jibanyan joins Nate or Kate as part of the story and fusing him with one of the Roughraffs found in Uptown Springdale’s back alleys will give you Baddinyan. (Befriend a Roughraff by feeding it a noodle dish.) He excels in speed, like all Charming types, but works as a solid fighter thanks to his abilities. His Pompadour keeps enemy headbutt attacks from hitting him, which is a nice perk. It’s his Inspirit and Soultimate attacks that make him most worthwhile. His Delinquency will make an enemy attack its allies. Also, Nyice ta Beatcha, the Soultimate, deals damage to all enemies. Both are great perks for a character you can get in the first few hours of the game.

Having a character with Popularity is a perk too, since it makes befriending Yo-Kai Watch’s Yokai easier. I’ve extolled the virtues of Shmoopie before, but there’s another option if you want a party member that will help you make more friends, but perhaps deal a little more damage. Casanuva is a fantastic pick. He starts out as a D Rank Cupistol, which can be found in Downtown Springdale in trees and likes bread. He’s still a healer, like Shmoopie, but has stronger spirit that helps with a Whirlwind damage dealing technique. Once you start seeing the A Rank Casanuvas around, you can get a Love Buster as a random drop from him, which can be fused with Cupistol to evolve it. His spirit and speed are great, he has a strong Storm technique, and can deal decent damage with Guns Blazing. His Inspirit, Popularize, is good if you have a party member with high defense to act as a tank, since all opponents will attack him, an the Heavenly Heart Soultimate will heal 130 hit points for all allies. As another plus, Casanuva is an A Rank, whereas Shmoopie’s evolved form, Pinkipoo, is only a B Rank.

Appak is another character than makes quite a difference if you have him around. Unfortunately, you really have to work for this Charming type. Walkappa joins the party as part of a story event, just like Jibanyan, but evolving him isn’t as simple as finding another Yo-Kai for a fusion. You have to level him up to 32, either by keeping him around or using experience orbs, before you get this A Rank character. It’s worth it, though, because he boasts high attack and speed. His Penetrade means you’ll always deal elemental damage, which is helpful with his incredibly powerful Waterfall Technique that hits one enemy and Soultimate Torrent Slash that attacks every foe. Both deal water damage. His Inspirit, Torrent Power, can boost the strength of a weaker ally, like Casanuva, to make them more useful. Also, his Double Slice attack can do some decent damage.

But if you want someone really powerful, you should really try for a Dragon Lord. Draggie joins as part of a story quest in the tenth chapter. If you’ve been staying out all night and pushing the limits during Terror Time, you might already have his fusion item, the Dragon Orb. This turns him into a S Rank Dragon Lord, which has a Dragon Force ability that increases his strength when his health is low. His Maul Attack and Meteor Technique are both incredibly powerful. Like Appak, he also has an Inspirit move that boosts an allies’ strength, making someone like Baddinyan or Casanuva more valuable. Best of all is his Soultimate, Dragon Rock, which deals significant damage to enemies.

Bloominoko is a fun buddy to have around, though you have to work for it. It evolves from a Noko that’s fused with a Lucky Drop. Except a Noko only randomly appears in areas all around Springdale and is rare to befriend, even if you have the hamburgers he craves. Lucky drops appear sometimes as a reward after beating a Noko, so you’re really working for this guy. If you do put all the work in to earning one, you’ll have a critter with super strong Maul and Meteor attacks and techniques. So basically the Dragon Lord moves, but only sooner. Bloominoko also Inspirits allies a stat boost thanks to Fortunate, and his Lucky Smile Soultimate heals 150 health for all allies. It’s a good character to have around if you need money too, since Good Fortune increases cash earned from a fight.

Finally, there’s Shadow Venoct. This is a Crank-a-Kai exclusive Yo-Kai and S Rank creature, but there’s a way to get him early. People on Reddit have been compiling a list of QR codes from episodes of the anime and medals, as well as password codes. When I scanned one of these QR codes and received a 5 star coin, Shadow Venoct was the reward. It’s a fantastic character, thanks to a Secrecy skill that keeps it from being targeted and an Inspirit move called Enshroud that makes other party members less likely to be targeted too. It has a Restore technique to aid allies, which helps balance out a party that consists of these other characters. His Soultimate Shadow Dragon is fantastic for dealing 10 hits to all enemies. You aren’t guaranteed to get him from a five star coin, but if you do, he’s a great friend.

With over 230 Yo-Kai, there are plenty characters out there for you to favor. It’s especially reassuring to see how many of these handy folks end up joining a player’s party naturally as Yo-Kai Watch’s story progresses. But, if you don’t want to wait, don’t forget to always find the anime episode QR codes and growing collection of passwords to improve your odds of building a good party with the Crank-a-Kai. And, of course we want to hear everyone’s opinions on which characters they’ve found most valuable in the game.

That's a whole lot of Yo-kai, zura.

Yo-kai Watch
series global shipments have topped 10 million, Level-5 announced.

Eight months ago, in March, the series had sold a total of seven million units.

Since then, we’ve seen the release of Yo-kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team and White Dog Squad in Japan, which sold a total of 1.7 million units as of last week, and the original Yo-kai Watch in North America.

December 5 will see the release of Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version for Wii U in Japan, and December 12 a special ‘Moon Rabbit Team’ update for Yo-kai Watch Busters. On December 19, the second anime movie, o-Kai Watch the Movie 2: King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!, will debut in Japanese theaters. And in summer 2016, Japan will get Yo-kai Watch 3. Finally, a Yo-kai Watch and Romance of the Three Kingdoms collaboration is also planned.

(Editor’s Note: This post originally claimed it was “sales,” not “shipments.” My bad.)

What Do You Do After Beating Yo-Kai Watch? December 2, 2015 . 1:30pm

Yo-Kai Watch’s post-game adventures can last as long as, or maybe even longer than, the main storyline.

Quote:

Yo-Kai Watch only has 11 chapters, so there’s a good chance you’re nearing the end of the adventure. But the end isn’t really the end in this Nintendo 3DS game. There’s an epilogue, and a lot of additional activities open up after Nate or Kate helps clean up mischief in Springdale.

For example, you can’t upgrade your Yo-Kai watch to S Rank in-game until you’ve gotten through Yo-Kai Watch’s main questline. Once you do, you can head to Mr. Goodsight. He’ll ask you to fight the Appak at Hooligan Road, Impass at Liar Mountain, and Timidevil at Hungry Pass. Beat them and you can rank up.

That means finding a lot of new Yo-Kai, as each additional rank means getting to see new creatures in the wild. It’s a great means of encouraging people to revisit every area in Springdale during the day and night. Especially since special Yo-Kai that you couldn’t befriend in the main game, like Awevil, Corptain, Dromp, Grainpa, and Kyubi are all willing to tag along now that Nate and Kate have proven themselves. Many of them end up joining due to post-game quests, but others will happen to be in locations where you couldn’t go due to inexperience and lowered ranks before.

Perhaps the best place to go, though is the Infinite Inferno. It’s a bonus dungeon that you might have noticed in Breezy Hills during the main game, but could never access. This extra area can be accessed by getting the Mr. Stone’s wife’s key to the shrine hidden down the tunnel near the Shoten Temple. Bosses from the main game reappear here, as well as new bosses and Yo-Kai you may have only been able to get one of during the main game. (Jibanyan and Komasan are good examples.) Make sure you’re in a good place when you head into the Infinite Inferno, though, because you’ll need characters around at least level 60 to fight some of the bosses within.

The post-game could be considered Yo-Kai Watch’s greatest secret. If you rush, you could beat the main game easily in under 30 hours, but all of the extra quests, compendium completion, and Infinite Inferno exploration could double your playtime.

Yo-Kai Watch is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS.

Yo-kai Watch launches April 29 in Europe

Published 15 hours ago. 17 comments.
Quote:
Level-5's 3DS series finally headed to Europe.

Yo-kai Watch will launch for 3DS in Europe on April 29, Nintendo of Europe announced.

The European release follows a North American release on November 6 last year, and a Japanese release in 2013.
Find a full overview below, via Nintendo:
In Springdale there are mysterious forces behind everyday problems. From always feeling hungry to spending too much money or saying something mean accidentally, behind all these common problems there are very likely to be a mischievous Yo-kai to be found.

Yo-kai are charming, funny, outrageous characters that can be found everywhere, living in their own secret world from our own, and with a habit of causing a lot of weird problems for people – often with hilarious results. To protect the town, players will need to befriend as many Yo-kai as they can; with a little luck and some good tactics, they can be befriended and relied on for help, but many have their own problems that need solving too. Yo-kai such as Jibanyan, an abandoned cat with an affinity for fighting trucks who just wants to impress his old owner, or Komasan, a mild-mannered Yo-kai who needs a hand finding his lost brother.

As the new owner of the powerful Yo-kai Watch, a watch with a lens that allows the normally hidden Yo-kai to be seen, players must solve the mysteries of the Yo-kai, get to the root of these issues and protect Springdale.

In addition to the main story there are hundreds of additional quests littered throughout Springdale just waiting for players to find them. Exploring and finding these quests are all part of the fun: Springdale is a vast town with a number of shops, parks, a forest, and even more secret locations to be discovered. Completing these additional quests will help players level up their Yo-kai to an even stronger level, and sometimes find even more new Yo-kai to recruit!

Existing Yo-kai can also be combined using Yo-Kai Fusion to create new unique and powerful members of your party – some of which cannot be found any other way.

It takes more than just a strong party of Yo-kai to win battles though. Players must also have a smart strategy, as battling the powerful Yo-kai bosses is sure to keep even the most proficient Yo-kai Watch players on their toes.

All Yo-kai possess their own unique abilities, called Soultimate Moves, that when unleashed can swiftly turn the tide of battle. Players will need to carefully manage their party on the Nintendo 3DS touch screen to swap their Yo-kai in and out of battle, judge when to use their Soultimate Moves, and wisely use items to keep their Yo-kai in good condition.

Friends can also pit their best Yo-kai teams against each other by battling via local wireless play.

Yo-kai Watch 2 launches September 30 in North America

And other Yo-kai Watch related announcements.

Yo-kai Watch 2
will launch for 3DS in North America on September 30, Nintendo announced. It will be available in two versions, Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Yo-kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls, and each feature Yo-kai that can only be found in their respective games.

The Level-5-developed title offers the same RPG gameplay and adventure as the first game, as well as many new areas to explore outside of Springdale, more than 100 new Yo-kai, a new and improved in-game Yo-kai watch, and the ability to travel back in time.

In addition to the new game, Hasbro announced it will add new items to its Yo-kai Watch toy line this fall, including Yo-kai Watch Model Zero, designed to look like the watch worn by Nate in Season 2 of the animated series. It includes “Yo-kai Motion Technology” that lets fans insert a “Yo-Motion Yo-kai Medal” into the watch and see a projected animation of that character. These medals will be released alongside the watch, as well as custom Yo-kai Watch accessories, large plush toys, and electronic figures. A trading card game is also planned.

Disney XD announced it will premiere the second season of the Yo-kai Watch anime this summer. Here’s an overview, via Nintendo:
This season, join Nate, Whisper and Jibanyan as they get the new Yo-kai Watch Model Zero. But just because he has a new watch, that doesn’t mean Nate’s life will get any easier. Season 2 has more Yo-kai, more miniseries, more episodes and, most importantly, more laughs! Tune in to see how a new cast of Yo-kai interrupts Nate’s normal life in unexpected and hilarious ways.
In Japan, Yo-kai Watch 3 is due out on July 16.

So after watching a few playthroughs of the first game, I like what I have seen, but my only real criticism is the laziness in recoloring Yokai and calling it new. I didn't like it in Digimon and I'm not liking it here. I'm actually interested in picking this up. I already have a team in mind of Rattelle, Blizzaria, Schmoopie, Draggie, Jibbanyan, and Komasan. But that might change with Walkappa and several other Yokai that I adore.

I played the first one and it skewed a little too young for me. The Treehouse stream of the new one looked like it might have a little more to offer older players. I just love the art style of the games a whole lot so I'll probably have to pick this up when #2 comes out.

As shown in the video above, the Yo-kai will fight freely on their own, but you can also give them orders. You can move the medals on the bottom screen to move the Yo-kai to reposition them. This comes in handy when you want them next to another Yo-kai for benefits. You’ll also get to switch out Yo-kai from the ones that are on the bench.

Controlling the Yo-kai Medal with your own hands and out-strategizing your enemies will play a big role in Yo-kai Watch 3.

Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi & Tempura will release in Japan on July 16, 2016 for Nintendo 3DS.
