Nintendo has announced a North American National StreetPass Weekend. Between September 30 and October 1, 2016, people will be able to visit any Nintendo Zone location with their Nintendo 3DS system and acquire StreetPasses from people across the country.

This National StreetPass Weekend is being held in honor of Yo-Kai Watch 2. The Nintendo 3DS game will launch on September 30, 2016, the day the event begins. The original Yo-Kai Watch allowed other players’ Yo-Kai to stay in your game’s inn after StreetPassing with them, and Nintendo’s announcement says this weekend will give you a chance to see new Yo-Kai after connecting with other players again.

It also provides an opportunity to StreetPass with Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past players. You can share a Traveller’s Tablet with people you pass by and receive one of theirs in return. Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is immediately available for the Nintendo 3DS.

Yo-kai Watch 2 Picks Up The Pace. September 28, 2016 . 12:00pm

Yo-kai Watch 2 wastes no time in giving you access to all areas, online features, a better Yo-kai Watch, and other important features.

7 comments Read >

Quote:
The original Yo-kai Watch was a rather leisurely adventure. The game was structured into episodes, much like an anime, and gradually doled out access to new areas and abilities. It eased you into this monster collecting adventure. While this meant you were always prepared for everything, it also made some elements a little too easy and dragged out some storyline elements and gameplay features. With Yo-kai Watch 2, you’re immediately thrust into every important part of the game.

It all starts with a watch. Since some people may choose to skip the installment in favor of Yo-kai Watch 2, the introduction conveniently provides an excuse to reintroduce the Yo-kai Watch mechanic. A group of Yo-kai have plans for Springdale, and Nate or Kate having the watch and supernatural friends will ruin them. They subsequently erase the avatar and every Yo-kai’s memories of the previous games’ friendships and events. Fortunately, a mysterious watch shop shows up after a family outing involving donut acquisition, our hero or heroine gets the Yo-kai Watch again, and he or she reunites with Whisper and Jibanyan. With the crew back together, it’s back to more daily life episodes as you work your way toward more pressing and important encounters.

From there, Yo-kai Watch 2 really picks up. The first installment was rather limiting. You could only access certain parts of Springdale, keeping you from accessing new parts of your own town until the one, two, three, or even five hour mark. This also restricted access to certain gameplay elements. Yo-kai fusion and StreetPassing were off the table until you unlocked Blossom Heights and its Shoten Temple and Wayfarer Manor. Within the first hour or so, you have all of Yo-kai Watch 2’s major functions. You can find Yo-kai Hot Spots. You can StreetPass or evolve characters. Wisps begin showing up sooner in battle. Most importantly, by the seven hour mark I had access to the entire Springdale area. By the nine hour mark, I was at Harrisville. The game goes out of its way to pick up the pace.

This goes for storyline quests too. I felt like I was getting to Yo-kai Watch 2’s more important parts more quickly. If a storyline quest had a gap where key quests had to be fulfilled to proceed, there were usually only two or three in the earliest portions of the game. These key quests would also be tied to important elements. One was a Battle tutorial, which immediately unlocked online versus after its completion. (That was acquired within the first five hours.) Blasters and Medal Swap apps were unlocked around the same time, making sure I had prompt access to multiplayer components. I was absolutely prepared.

Which was great, because it made be feel like I wasn’t missing anything with Yo-kai Watch 2. As much as I enjoyed the original game, I felt like I’d need to do all this backtracking whenever a new feature or area opened up, as there’d be something from neighborhood specific shops, quests that made me try and find possibly forgotten places, and Yo-kai criminals that were difficult to keep track of. Yo-kai Watch 2 is on point. As I headed onto the train to Harrisville, after spending almost two hours just roaming around all of Springdale once it’d been unlocked, I had the Yo-kai Spots, Trophies, Yo-kai Cam, Yo-Criminals, Battle, Blaster, Medal Swap, and Weather apps available. Sure, I didn’t have a bike or fishing pole yet, but I had a D-rank watch, over $100, and 36 Medals. I felt like I could conquer anything.

The array of Yo-kai present in Yo-kai Watch 2 helped too. The original game had about 180 characters. Yo-kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls’ Medallium says there are 374 available. It pretty essentially doubles it. Since you get to upgrade the Yo-kai Watch. befriend Baku, and unlock the ability to scan physical medals within the first few hours, you’re getting fast access to a substantial number of characters right away. This means both the offline and online battles are more interesting, thanks to the wide variety. You have more options, which makes things more intriguing.

Even wandering around town, I found I had more reasons to pull out the Yo-kai Watch and explore. Yo-kai Hotspots open up early, with early Baffle Boards being found in Uptown Springdale, Breezy Hills, Blossom Heights, Shopper’s Row, and Downtown Springdale. Not all can have Yo-kai placed, but it’s very possible to have your initial Brushido evolved to Washogun and placed by the Bathhouse before heading to Harrisville. Gates of Whimsy appear rather readily, once you’ve been introduced to the Gourd Pond Museum. Leadonis are plentiful, guiding you to treasures if you can keep up. There were so many more ways to kill time, and I was able to start enjoying these extra features faster than before.

Yo-kai Watch had quite a task ahead of it last year. It was a Pokemon-like that needed to define itself. It had to introduce us to this new world and help us get accustomed to a different pace. Yo-kai Watch 2 doesn’t have that heavy a burden. Instead, it can offer a brief, but effective, refresher and get to the good stuff. It moves at such a wonderful pace, with new gameplay elements, areas, characters, and features introduced at the absolute best time. There’s no wondering and waiting when you’ll finally get to see a new part of town, upgrade your watch, head to the past, or go online. There are no unpleasant delays. You’re just able to immediately jump in and enjoy every part of this supernatural world.

Yo-kai Watch 2 will come to the Nintendo 3DS in North America on September 30, 2016.

Yo-kai Watch 2 Gives You More To Do In Battles. September 30, 2016 . 12:00pm

Yo-kai Watch 2 doesn’t drastically change the series’ battle system, but it does give players a little more to do in each fight.

1 comment Read >
Quote:

The Yo-kai Watch series battles are something of a hands-off affair. You have six Yo-kai set into your watch’s dial. They act of their own accord in battle, with choosing which moves they’ll use. Your own actions are rather limited, which means you spend a lot of time watching them do their thing. While Yo-kai Watch 2 doesn’t make any drastic changes, there are some significant alterations that give you more to do and make things a bit more interesting.

You begin Yo-kai Watch with a basic… well… Yo-kai Watch. It has the standard functions. You have six medals equipped and can press the left and right triggers to switch to different active Yo-kai. If their Soultimate gauge is filled, you can go through a brief spinning, tapping, or dial moving mini-game to make a character use its ultimate move. If one is negatively inspirited and can’t use Soultimates, you can perform similar interactions when it isn’t active to purify it. Items can be used on foes to make them friendly or friends to heal them. You’re also able to choose your Yo-kai’s target or tap floating wisps. While this sounds like it gives you a lot to do, it really doesn’t. Most basic battles don’t even require any activity on your part.

But, it did feel like I was a little more active earlier on in Yo-kai Watch 2. It seemed like the Yo-kai’s Soultimate gauges filled more quickly, allowing more opportunities to use these specials. The Targeting function, usually something that worked best in boss battles where you pin specific parts to exploit weaknesses, now lets you see all recruitable Yo-kai’s favorite foods and snacks. You also get healing Yo-kai earlier in this installment, which leads to more dial spinning. Brushido is automatically recruited at the outset, Tattletell can be your first Crank-a-kai Yo-kai, and Tongus joins shortly after you arrive in Harrisville. You still live a mostly sedentary lifestyle early on, but opportunities to be active present themselves.

Things really pick up once you’ve gone through the steps to get the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero. This new tool makes it possible to be more productive in battle. One way is via Moxie moves. It’s possible to make two active Yo-kai give up their soultimate meter power to supercharge the third’s special attack. This can’t happen without your input, and you have to determine the right times to use these abilities. I suggest saving them for boss battles, as they do a great job of whittling down more powerful enemies’ health. They’re also a fantastic resource in online battles, as you can use them to try and wipe out one of your opponents’ strongest allies.

But the best use of Yo-kai Watch 2’s new watch is the enemy poking mechanic. The key to making the most of this is setting Yo-kai that have debuffing inspirits. When one of your allies casts their debilitating spell on an enemy or when an enemy is loafing, it’s possible to target and tap the enemies. It’s somewhat similar to the other mini-games, in that you’ll need to focus your attention on the lower screen. The enemy will be represented there, and it’s possible to poke parts to provoke reactions. Some spots will make them friendlier and more likely to join you. Others will give you items, money, or soul. I felt like I was getting money or soul more often on initial taps, but eventually you find the sweet spots.

The battle system in Yo-kai Watch 2 isn’t drastically different. There are a few minor alterations that give you a little more to do, but it isn’t suddenly a traditional turn-based affair where you directly determine each action. I feel like what has been done is a step in the right direction, though, and by the 10 hour mark or so you should be enjoying a better watch that makes you more productive.

Yo-kai Watch 2 is now available on the Nintendo 3DS in North America.

Meet Kumamon In Yo-kai Watch 2 . October 5, 2016 . 10:00am

One of Yo-kai Watch 2’s side quests lets you meet Kumamon, Kumamoto Prefecture’s mascot, and recruit a Yo-kai that looks a lot like him.

Quote:

One of Japan’s most famous regional mascots is in Yo-kai Watch 2. After completing a number of Harrisville quests that sees your avatar’s grandfather, Kenny, reconnecting with his Yo-kai friends, a new sidequest will appear called “Your Local Mascot.” Harry Barry, a Yo-kai that wants to be Harrisville’s mascot, will appear at the small town’s train station to kick off a back-and-forth chain that will eventually result in everyone meeting Kumamon, the mascot for Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture.

Kumamon has been Kumamoto Prefecture’s mascot since 2010. He was voted the top mascot nationwide in 2011. He and Funassyi, the mascot for Funabashi, Chiba, are two of the most famous Japanese mascot characters. Kumamon has also appeared in Apple iOS and Android games, like Kumamon Catch, as well as Kumamon Bomber: Puzzle de Kumamon Gymnastics for the Nintendo 3DS.

Unlike Taiko no Tatsujin’s Don-chan, Kumamon won’t join your Yo-kai Watch 2 party. However, Harry Barry is a Kumamon look-alike will join your party after finishing the sidequest.

Yo-kai Watch 2 is now available for the Nintendo 3DS in North America.

Yo-kai Watch 2’s Side Quests Can Be Multi-day Events. October 5, 2016 . 12:00pm

If you’re playing Yo-kai Watch 2 every day, make sure you pay attention to some sidequests and in-game events that will let you work your way toward interesting rewards.

8 comments Read >

Quote:

The Yo-kai Watch games keep track of time. I’m not talking about the in-game clock that makes various Yo-kai appear at certain times of day. I’m referring to real-time events. While you play Yo-kai Watch 2, it’s keeping track of the time. This means playing every day doesn’t just mean you get to a great JRPG daily. It means you could be a step closer to something really cool happening in the game.

The most obvious example of this element in action is the Crank-a-Kai. Every day, you get a set number of turns on this gacha. You’ll probably get helpful items, but sometimes you’ll even be awarded a new Yo-kai. Each day, you get a certain number of spins, after which the machine disappears and you must wait for a second day. However, even this is slightly different in Yo-kai Watch 2. For starters, the machines are different in the past and present. Using the standard red, yellow, orange, pink, green, blue, light blue, or purple coins could get you a classic Yo-kai in the past and regular one in the future.

If you’ve been collecting Yo-kai Watch 2 passwords and QR codes, then you need to start working with Gnomey. You automatically recruit him when trying to befriend Kenny in the past. Once he reaches level 28, he becomes High Gnomey and can be places at the Breezy Hills Baffle Board in the North West side of the map. Everyday, you can talk to him to earn more Crank-a-Kai turns. It’s an essential bonus.

Quite a few of the quests are multi-day events in Yo-kai Watch 2 as well. Let’s start with Don-chan.The anthropomorphic drum and star of Taiko no Tatsujin is in Yo-kai Watch 2. I discovered him after I was about halfway through the game. A Mirapo near the Mt. Wildwood Shrinewill take you to his festival realm. There, you find all sorts of foods in one place and battle Don-chan once per day. If you manage to raise his friendship levels enough, he’ll join your party as a playable character. He loves snacks, like potato chips and tasty nibbles. Also, once he’s in your crew, you can go ahead and talk to Whisper at your house, turn him into the Yo-kai who follows you, and pretend you’re playing one of those Taiko no Tatsujin Nintendo 3DS games with an RPG story mode. (I highly recommend it.)

Another multiday quest involves the Springdale Sports Club. Remember Downtown Springdale’s Construction Site? Well, you can use a Baffle Board to begin construction. Summoning a Mochismo to that spot will cause a club to be built downtown after three days. Once the gym has opened, you can improve Yo-kai’s Yo-formances in four different areas, at a cost. You can earn GP by participating in battles at the Sports Club and spending it on a character can improve their strength, spirit, defense, and speed. However, lowering one stat will decrease another. working on strength or speed will lower that character’s defense, while working on spirit or defense will lower speed. Again, being patient will let you reap all sorts of rewards.

Given how large Yo-kai Watch 2 is, what with all of the story and sidequests to complete and Yo-kai to recruit, there’s a chance you’re already pacing yourself and playing through a bit at a time. It’s interesting how the game itself offers specific quests and battles that encourage you to stop by every day too. Just take care to play fair and not attempt to adjust your Nintendo 3DS’ clock to speed things up. Gargaros will know, pop up to chastise you, and might cause Terror Time to appear more often for a brief period of time as a punishment.

Yo-kai Watch 2 is available in North America for the Nintendo 3DS.

Level-5 announced in the latest issue of CoroCoro that they’re releasing a third version of Yo-kai Watch 3 with the “Sukiyaki” version in Japan on December 15, 2016 for Nintendo 3DS. [Thanks, Game Memo.]

When Yo-kai Watch 2 released in Japan in July 2014 with their Head and Founder versions (Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls in the West), they released the third version of the game in Headliner in December of that year.

It looks like Yo-kai Watch 3 will follow in the same steps, with the new Sukiyaki version joining as the third one to go with Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi & Tempura. While no other details were shared in CoroCoro, we can expect to hear more about it in the near future.

Similar to what Level-5 did with Yo-kai Watch 2, the Sushi and Tempura versions will get an update when Sukiyaki releases, although no other details were shared as to what kind of content we’ll see in the update.

On a rather entertaining note, it’s pretty funny seeing how a lot of Japanese fans on Twitter not only guessed that a third version was on the horizon, but many also guessed the Sukiyaki name.

Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki releases in Japan on December 15, 2016 for Nintendo 3DS.

The latest big screen adventure of Jibanyan and friends sold 545,211 tickets for 608,033,110 yen (about US$5.189 million) on Saturday to Sunday across 415 screens in Japan.

While that was only 57.5% of the opening weekend box office for the previous Yo-kai Watch movie that eventually earned 5.53 billion yen (about US$47 million) it was more than enough to top Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that sold 413,600 tickets for 653 million yen (roughly US$5.573 million) across 368 screens in Japan from Saturday to Sunday, which was about 52.5% of the opening weekend box office of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

This isn’t the first time that a Yo-kai Watch movie won the a duel against tie sci-fi giant in the Japanese box office, as the previous Yo-kai Watch film also beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens last year.

Eiga.com projects that the film will earn over 4 billion yen (about US$34 million).

The Rise And Fall Of The Yo-kai Watch Boom That Took Japan By Storm. May 11, 2017 . 1:00pm

During the height of its peak in 2014, it wouldn’t have been strange to see Yo-kai Watch’s “Gera Gera Po Song” take over as Japan’s national anthem, but things have changed quite a bit since then.

During the height of its peak in 2014, it wouldn’t have been strange to see Yo-kai Watch’s “Gera Gera Po Song” take over as Japan’s national anthem, but the boom is seemingly ending according to the latest financial report from Bandai Namco Holdings. [Thanks, Yahoo Japan.]

While Level-5 is in charge of developing and distributing the Yo-kai Watch games, Bandai Namco Holdings is the company responsible for selling products based on the game, and it helped bring the company some serious money during its peak in 2014, where it impressively raked in over 55.2 billion yen (about $484.69 million USD).

Yo-kai Watch didn’t exactly start off as nation-sweeping hit with only 53,654 units sold in the 3DS game’s debuting week in July 2013, but things actually took off once the anime began airing in January 2014.

Yo-kai Watch 2 also released that following July and it pushed the series’ popularity to new heights.

To give you a good idea just how popular Yo-kai Watch was during its peak, you basically couldn’t go anywhere in Japan without seeing Jibanyan, Whisper, and their many friends.

These ghastly critters were everywhere—from department stores to your very own toilet.

Yo-kai Watch a.k.a the “Pokémon killer”

Considering that having a successful anime isn’t usually enough to drive a series to such heights, there are many factors as to how Yo-kai Watch got so popular in Japan.

Most would agree that it’s because of a sense of familiarity that comes from the deep roots of Japanese tradition that is seen in many of these yo-kai, based on various folklore characters. So basically, it was something kids were able to enjoy alongside their parents and grandparents.

This would also explain why it was so popular in Japan but never reached the same level in the West.
However, signs of slowing down began to show after Bandai Namco Holdings reported its 2015 profits of 32.9 billion yen ($288.88 million USD).

At the time, analysts attributed its decline to the oversaturation of the series after releasing a sequel to the first Yo-kai Watch just a year later, followed by a third version of Yo-kai Watch 2 about five months after that. It even saw a couple spinoffs that year in Yo-kai Watch Busters and Yo-kai Watch: Just Dance Special Version.

Come 2016, Bandai Namco Holdings’ big seller franchises in Dragon Ball and One Piece continued to perform well as usual, and even though Mobile Suit Gundam didn’t do as well their 78.6 billion yen performance the year prior, it managed to stay close with 74.3 billion yen.
Yo-kai Watch, on the other hand, saw its biggest plummet after pulling in 10.4 billion yen, a third of what it made in 2015 and only a fifth of its peak year in 2014. This was also during the year the series released their third major title in Yo-kai Watch 3, which was nowhere near on par with the first two installments.

Analysts expect sales to continue dropping in 2017 with an estimate of about 6.3 billion yen ($91.3 million USD).

It’s also worth noting that Pokémon saw a huge revival in Japan last year as well as a worldwide surge in popularity when Pokémon GO launched in the summer of 2016 and the latest main entry in Pokémon Sun & Moon that November, both putting up record numbers and profits from around the globe. These mega-hit titles definitely overshadowed Yo-kai Watch, and it showed when Level-5 released its third version of Yo-kai Watch 3 last December, which still remains the lowest-selling mainline title by far.

Level-5 president and CEO Akihiro Hino stated last year that they’re taking a pause from Yo-kai Watch to focus on other new things, which makes sense considering they’re barely releasing their fourth cross-media project, The Snack World, this year and have already announced a fifth in Megaton Musashi. Let’s not forget that the company is also busy working on titles such as Ni no Kuni II, Layton’s Mystery Journey, Inazuma Eleven Ares, and Fantasy Life Online.

So does this mean the end of the Yo-kai Watch series for Level-5 and Japan? Absolutely not. Don’t forget that they’re still raking in billions of yen. However, other than a few smartphone games in the works, we probably won’t be seeing major titles from the series anytime soon.

Besides, Jibanyan and friends could probably use a little break after all that hard work. Until next time, our spooky friends.

Yo-kai Watch 2: Oni Evolution Update Released For Bony Spirits And Fleshy Souls. September 14, 2017 . 10:00am

People who own Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits or Fleshy Souls may want to pop back into the game today. Nintendo has just released the Oni Evolution Update that brings the games up to version 2.0. This adds new content to the games and makes it possible to link with or transfer save data to Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters.

Once the Oni Evolution Update is downloaded, Yo-kai Watch 2 owners with Bony Spirits or Fleshy Souls will see an immediate difference. Beating the game will give Bony Spirits owners the opportunity to recruit Jibanyan S and Fleshy Souls owners Komasan S. (Psychic Specters gets Komajiro S.) The Psychic Blasters Mode will be available in the game, bringing with it new bosses. Rubeus J comes from connecting with Bony Spirits and Hardy Hound with Fleshy Spirits. When linking up with another game, either alone or with a friend, you can meet and get new Yo-kai. Linking up all three makes it possible to get Dianyn, Emenyan, Sapphinyan, Moximous K, Moximous N, or Orcanos. Linking Psychic Specters and Bony Spirits could make Gargaros or Rubinyan available. Linking Psychic Specters and Fleshy Souls can make Ogralus or Topanyan available.

The save data transfer process has been explained or detailed. After grabbing the Oni Evolution Update for either Yo-kai Watch: Bony Spirits or Fleshy Souls and a copy of Psychic Specters, you choose the “Export Data” option from the main menu. Transfer data will be saved to your Nintendo 3DS SD card. Then, when you go to Psychic Specters, you choose the “Import Data” option to bring over your save file. This brings over your story progress, Yo-kai data, and version-exclusive quests, but not your random multiplayer battles.

Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls are available for the Nintendo 3DS. Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters will come to the Nintendo 3DS on September 29, 2017.

The definitive version of Yo-kai Watch 2 is about to be released. Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters is an enhanced version of Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls with new areas, adventures, Yo-kai, and activities. To help prepare people for what this installment is like, a two minute launch trailer has been released that shows off both the returning content and new additions.

What is especially nice is the detail paid to the Wicked Yo-kai. They can be befriended for the first time in Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters, with the Executives around Springdale and Wicked Parts letting you make regular Yo-kai into Servant versions via Fusion. Unkeen, Unpleasant, Unfairy, Unkaind, and Untidy are all shown.

Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters will come to North America and Europe on September 29, 2017.

Natsume must work with other people who have obtained the new Yo-Kai Watches, in order to restore the bond between humans and Yo-kai. [Thanks, 4Gamer]

The anime is a sequel to the movie Yo-Kai Watch Shadowside: The Return of the Oni King, which was a crossover film with the GeGeGe no Kitaro series.

The movie marked a change in artstyle to creepier looks for classic Yo-kai, which the anime is carrying over.

Since the third game, Keita (or Nathan, in the English versions) grew up, and became unable to see Yo-kai anymore. His duty was completed, and the watch was sealed away. 30 years later, Yo-kai begin to act up again, and his daughter Natsume is chosen as one of the few successors to the Yo-kai Watch.

The tonal shift followed a drop in interest in the IP, which we reported on last year.

Yo-kai Watch Shadowside will begin airing in Japan on April 13, 2018.
