Nintendo is probably coming out with a mini retro SNES Classic, similar to their impossible-to-find NES Classic. Vic tells us what games he'd like to see on the system in our latest Fan Question of the Day!

This is your last chance.

A couple of weeks ago, it was revealed that Nintendo was discontinuing the already very hard to find nostalgia item, the NES Classic. The item has only been available since November and has been nearly impossible to find on store shelves and you're only going to have one last chance to get it at retail price.
Tomorrow at Best Buy, if you're quick enough, you can walk into the store and purchase an NES Classic for the $59.99 retail price. Early reports suggest stores only have around 12-14 units available, so if you want one really bad you may want to go line-up right now.

NES Classic units to be sold tomorrow at Best Buy in-store. A couple stores broke date and sold today, reportedly 12-14 units each

Rumors suggest that the NES Classic is being discontinued to make room for another Nintendo item, the SNES Classic. No official announcement has been made, but we can probably expect to hear something around E3 this year.

Even though I don't agree with the action, I can kind of get it. But then I would ask why offer it at such a low price, or why release it just a short time before the Switch launch?

Eh, the price point makes perfect sense, for the target market it was going for. Nintendo just botched its estimate of how big that target market would be. Raising the price would have only made it less attractive to its intended demographic. The problem was that, since Nintendo under-predicted its sales by a *lot*, its intended demographic never actually saw one. Higher price would have done nothing useful, only larger supply.

As for why this soon before the Switch? I suspect its because "We want a major product for the Christmas season". Nintendo probably knew, upward of a year before, that the Switch would not be ready for Christmas. So, they whipped up the NES Classic as a stopgap that would be cheap and easy to produce, and give them some good publicity and mindshare during the holidays.

In retrospect? They probably should have manufactured something more like 6 million of them, rather than the 2 million or so they made.

Without the NES Classic Nintendo wouldn't have had anything with decent buzz for Christmas. Yeah Pokemon was selling and the 3DS was selling, but Nintendo wanted something that would stir up attention. The NES Classic was rare and generated a lot of buzz. I'd say it was mission accomplished.

  • The NES Classic is officially dead, even if some stores are still getting their last shipments, it's dead. Nintendo announced that the console will no longer be in production and that it had never been intended to be anything more than available for a limited time.
Before the NES Classic went out of production, retailers were constantly sold out of the device. The president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, Reggis Fils-Aime, has detailed that the NES Classic managed to sell 2.3 million units.
That means that somehow 2.3 million people managed to get their hands on the device, but doesn't bear into account how many of those people were dirty scalpers that purchased more than one console at any given time only to flip them and sell them for six times the retail price on eBay. (/end rant)
Fils-Aime went on to detail that the 2.3 million people that grabbed the NES Classic were the very same people that managed to get Nintendo to add extra lifespan to the console.
"We had originally planned for this to be a product for last holiday," Fils-Aimé told TIME. "We just didn't anticipate how incredible the response would be. Once we saw that response, we added shipments and extended the product for as long as we could to meet more of that consumer demand.
"Even with that extraordinary level of performance, we understand that people are frustrated about not being able to find the system, and for that, we really do apologize," he said. "But from our perspective, it's important to recognize where our future is and the key areas that we need to drive. We've got a lot going on right now and we don't have unlimited resources."
Basically, they killed the NES Classic so they could focus on the Switch (or perhaps drive sales to the Switch amidst the Nintendo high).

I went and got it yesterday. It wasn't expecting the same hype as the first time, but I was still relieved when I was able to get it.
