African-set dramatic thriller directed by Ed Zwick

Shock news, folks – Leonardo DiCaprio has agreed to star in a movie that won’t be directed by Martin Scorsese!

Yes, after his run of films with the monobrowed Master – Gangs Of New York, The Aviator and the currently-filming The Departed – DiCaprio will spread his wings a little… and the name of the film that will take him away from Marty? The Blood Diamond, an African-set thriller to be directed by Ed Zwick.

The movie will be set in a civil-war ravaged Sierra Leone circa 1999, and will see DiCaprio play a diamond smuggler who specialises in the sale of ‘blood diamonds’, which are then used to finance rebellions, terrorism and the like. So basically, he’s a murky and amoral anti-hero.

Things take a twist when he encounters a farmer whose young son has been recruited into an army of child soldiers and, presumably, he faces up to a moral conundrum and learns to live and love etc. etc. etc.

So, here we have a drama with the moral conscience of Hotel Rwanda, and presumably the action quotient of Zwick’s last picture, The Last Samurai. Sounds vaguely promising, although we’re not exactly counting the days so far.

Nevertheless, the combo of DiCaprio and Zwick (whose films are often portentous and slightly pretentious, but look great, with quality casts) would seem to indicate that this could be Oscar bait, come 2007. Filming on the Zwick flick is scheduled to begin next year.

Jennifer Connelly is in talks to star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in director Edward Zwick's dramatic thriller The Blood Diamond at Warner Bros. Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The African adventure is set in Sierra Leone circa 1999, a time when the nation was in the midst of a horrific civil war. DiCaprio plays the role of a smuggler who specializes in the sale of "blood diamonds," also known as "conflict diamonds" -- the precious stones used to finance rebellions, privateers and terrorists.

When the smuggler encounters an indigenous Mende farmer whose young son has disappeared into the RUF's army of child soldiers, the two men's fates become linked.

The story is by Charles Leavitt and C. Gaby Mitchell, with a screenplay by Leavitt and Zwick (The Last Samurai) & Marshall Herskovitz.

The studio is aiming to begin shooting early next year and is eyeing locations in Africa.

Hounsou Boards The Blood Diamond

Djimon Hounsou has been cast in the starring role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Warner Bros. Pictures' African thriller The Blood Diamond, which Ed Zwick is directing, reports Variety.

Jennifer Connelly is in talks to star as the female lead in the film, which is about a smuggler who specializes in the sale of "blood diamonds" in Sierra Leone circa 1999. Hounsou will play an African farmer who inadvertently gets drawn into the drama.

The film is set to begin shooting early next year. Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz were brought aboard the project to rewrite previous drafts by Charles Leavitt and Charlie Mitchell.

Hounsou (The Island, Beauty Shop) is currently shooting Fox 2000's Eragon.

The action drama Blood Diamond, directed by Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai, Courage Under Fire) and starring Leonardo DiCaprio (The Aviator, Titanic), Jennifer Connelly (Hulk, A Beautiful Mind) and Djimon Hounsou (The Island, Constantine) has commenced production in South Africa and Mozambique. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Set against the backdrop of civil war and chaos in 1990s Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (DiCaprio), a South African mercenary, and Solomon Vandy (Hounsou), a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories as different as any can be, until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives. While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon - who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields - has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen (Connelly), an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory, a journey that could save Solomon's family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.
