Default Marvel Solicitations for June 2011...Sorta

http://previewsworld.com/public/defa...ai=106758&ssd=

For whatever reason, Marvel is dragging with getting their June solicitations out there (almost every other company had them out a week ago), but here is Diamond's list of Marvel comics shipping for the month. So, there's no covers or info, unfortunately, but for those who want to know what to expect, here you are.

Might pick up Mystery Men. But it's a strong "Might."

If I don't buy that then I'm not picking up any Marvel until another Ruse series, or the next month when Waid and Rucka's books are out.

Boy, Marvel really is insistent on running every character with a movie into the ground, aren't they? All those Captain America books, sheesh.

So is their new thing, Twice a Month?

Amazing Spider-Man
Black Panther
Deadpool
Hulk
Incredible Hulks
Thunderbolts
Uncanny X-Men
Wolverine
X-Factor
X-Men
X-Men Legacy

And that's just the ongoings with two issues in June. That's not including a few minis twice in June and some .1 issues. For me personally that's an extra $14 that month that I haven't planned for and will need cut from other books I buy. I've fortunately dropped Incredible Hulks and Thunderbolts, and I expect the ASM twice a month, so that saves me a little but still!

Marvel has shipped titles twice a month a few times already. AVENGERS ACADEMY shipped two issues this month. I think THUNDERBOLTS has, too. Apparently, HERC will, since by June it should be nearing a 4th issue, yet it hasn't debuted by now. Doing so seems to help diminish slips in sales for ongoing titles a little, at least for a month. But more on this when I reply below.

Yes, seriously. The entire point of the .1 initiative, overall, was the ship more product and get regular buyers to get an extra comic. The angle that it was supposed to be a jumping on point for regular titles was marketing bunk; often proven untrue by the content or the scheduling (UNCANNY X-FORCE .1 encourages readers to jump upon issue six...which is a story in progress, not a new one). Some, like the ASM .1, are used to promote a new launch. But in practice it is another name for an annual, while STILL SHIPPING ANNUALS anyway. Basically, it is an excuse to ship more product, and dominate the unit share, and thus the dollar share.

Marvel's entire strategy in business is not to produce a better product, but to produce so many products that all competitors, even Batman Lantern Company (formerly known as DC) are buried.

FYI, Marvel likely has held off on June solicits because most of the biggest ones have been what has been revealed at the C2E2 convention. Had they released them earlier, they'd have been left with nothing for the con.

Well, I might be wrong, but I think it's not that uncommon for them to push stuff like that in the summer. I know ASM, for example, was essentially bi-weekly (before it actually was bi-weekly regularly, that is) in summer months in the past, and it's not unheard of for them to do that with other big titles.

I remember they used to do that for certain titles but it was always promoted, and even for a time right on the cover (bi-weekly series or events). The only books they promote as being bi-weekly are Amazing Spider-Man and Incredible Hulks. Everything else is just falling that way.

It's kind of annoying because when I have limited funds that are maxed out, releasing a title twice in a month means I have to drop another book that month to afford it. Doing it with 4 or so titles I buy means getting rid of 4 or so other books. It's more annoying than anything.

And completely unrelated... I noticed Avengers Academy is getting a .1 issue. I think that's the first 2.99 book to get one (though there's no initiative for it, as it's priced the same).

Well, I don't know, like I said I may be misremembering, but I always thought that was a fairly common thing for Marvel to do in the summer company wide.

And the best solution to your problem is to do some hardcore trimming:

DAKEN DARK WOLVERINE #7 $2.99
DAREDEVIL REBORN #3 (OF 4) $3.99
NEW MUTANTS #23 AGEX $2.99
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #3 (OF 5) $2.99
SILVER SURFER #2 (OF 5) $2.99
UNCANNY X-FORCE #6 $3.99
UNCANNY X-MEN #534 $3.99

X-MEN #9 $3.99
Look how much Tron Bonne saved you, and just look at how much better that list is after the trimming

You're evil Tron Bonne... pure evil.

Though likely several of those titles are getting the chop before too long.

I'm iffy on picking up Daredevil after Reborn, I think I'm going to drop Justice League starting this week, I'm considering dropping all the Green Lantern titles after the War of the Green Lanterns storyline, and I'm only getting that Daken issue for the X-23 crossover.... and I'm considering dropping X-23 if it doesn't pick up soon.

Thanks for leaving me X-Force though... that is the best X-title out at the moment so at least I have that

So, if I did my calculations correctly:

$2.99 = 51
$3.50 = 1
$3.95 = 2
$3.99 = 46
$4.99 = 10
$5.99 = 1

Not sure if all of those $4.99 books are new material or more of Marvel's reprints; so, I just added them to the list. At least the $2.99 books are finally higher than the $3.99. Doesn't help, though, that many titles are coming out twice this month.

Alpha Flight's back. Wonder how long it'll last THIS time? Rhetorical question...

And Bagley's back on Ultimate Spider-Man?!

I'm not happy about this Planet Red-Hulk arc in Hulk. Planet Hulk shot the Hulk up on my Favorites ladder by leaps and bounds, and now Rulk's taking that story for a spin? Pass.

I started the Carnage mini-series and I might as well finish it. Especially since Cletus is back, and issue 3 actually made me look foward to seeing things through.

Over in ASM, Anti-Venom finally returns. About damn time, SLOTT. I'm curious as to if the whole "my powers cut out when AV is near me" thing will still be in place. I'm also hoping that the way AV looks on the cover is JUST for the covers, since the lanky, spiky, demonic looking AV looks terrible. They had his look down perfectly in New Ways to Live. And I've been waiting since forever for AV to do a follow-up on Mr. Negative.

Venom issue 4 I can't pass up on. Flash-Venom vs. Spider-Man?! How will the symbiote react to being face-to-face with Spider-Man, despite Flash's loyal fan-worship?

Lastly, The Incredible Hulks...I can't believe I'm saying this...I'm looking foward to the most of all. Even with all the symbiotes coming out this month (Flash-Venom fighting Spidey?! The REAL Carnage?!! Anti-Venom's long overdue return?!!) its the Hulk title that wins in the "can't wait" category. This feels like the end of an era, since whoever takes over the book now will have a hard time following up Greg Pak.

Glad to see Kasady is going to be back as Carnage. I was excited to see that Carnage was back, but my interest dwindled when I found it was gonna be someone else, so that's good news.

So another hero is gonna die in Fear Itself #3, and Bucky-Cap is featured on the cover. I'd say that's pretty self-explanatory...

My thoughts on June.....

Fear Itself #3 - So long Bucky.......

I'll probably get the Fear Itself: Spider-Man tie in. It's got Mike McKone and Vermin.....I can't pass that up!

At least they're up front with Alpha Flight being just 8 issues saving me the heartbreak of falling in love with another book that gets canceled.

Secret Avengers #14 features Valkyrie which means Spencer is accomplishing twice as much as Brubaker did.

Is Doug Braithwaite even able to draw two books at once? Alpha Flight and Journey into Mystery.....isn't he notorious for being late?

Is it me or is Kev Walker getting better and better with his art? That's a pretty well done cover for Thunderbolts #158/159. His recent issue of T-Bolts was a big improvement.

Y'know, when I read these solicits for Avengers: The Children's Crusade I get really hyped but when I actually read the book I want to smash something. I'd say Thank God it's almost over but issues 7, 8 and 9 are going to take 6 months to come out.

Most people around here seem to love the work Parker is doing with Red Hulk but when I read that they're doing a Planet Red Hulk I just shake my head. (And I love Parker's work on T-Bolts.)

OH SHIZNIT!!!!! Camuncoli on ASM!!!!!! Oh yeah!!!!!! Somebody's been listening!!!!!!

Here's the actual solicitations with covers and info and all that jazz
C2E2 is over, and now Marvel releases their solicits. Shocking. Rants/thoughts ahoy.

- At the very least, we can say that events at Marvel are actually about facing off against villains for the most part. SIEGE was about taking on Norman Osborn, his league of baddies and the Void. FEAR ITSELF, at the very least, seems to distinctly involve Sin and the Serpent taking on the heroes. Hard to get any more evil than the Nazi daughter of Red Skull. That said, I suppose it is unintentionally hilarious that roughly a year ago around this time, Marvel made a big deal about Loki's demise, and now Loki is back and appearing in solicits for the next event. Gods never stay dead, but it just proves the criticism that events are all about "shocks" that rarely last. That said, it would be cool if Serpent united a lot of the "fear" villains as underlings.

- The same cover by Alan David of the AVENGERS ACADEMY is used for both AVENGERS #14 and AVENGERS ACADEMY #14.1. That is Marvel's way of saying, "I am error" (or, as David Gabriel often says, "You must have misheard us.")

- GHOST RIDER #0.1 is priceless. Marvel is beyond parody at times.

- FEAR ITSELF: HOME FRONT #3 is interesting; is that REALLY one of the Bastards Of Evil from YOUNG ALLIES teamed up with Whirlwind? It is good to see some newer villains cycling through, so poor Rhino or the Wrecking Crew or Absorbing Man don't always have to be jobbers.

- FEAR ITSELF: YOUTH IN REVOLT looks to be a solid series for fans of AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE, since it uses characters who haven't popped up much since that ended (Cloud 9 was in a one page story in AGE OF HEROES, but that's been it). It does look to be the first major use of Thor-Girl in years.

- AVENGERS ACADEMY #15, as always, looks cool. #14.1 also looks great as well. More months of double doses of AA, the better.

- Fred Van Lente is alone on HERC, and he is teamed with Greg Pak again on their ALPHA FLIGHT mini series. Interesting. Both look great. I guess HERC will launch two issues or something, as it launches in April and by June it is already at a 4th issue.

- You can tell that Nick Spencer is the new writer on SECRET AVENGERS when a solicit claims that Valkyrie, and not Steve Rogers. Who'd imagine a SECRET AVENGERS book that focused on one of them who wasn't Rogers, right?

- Two issues of THUNDERBOLTS, and it has the Juggernaut, circa FEAR ITSELF. I guess he's becoming a villain again. I am curious how Jeff Parker is dealing with it, since he was the closest to noble of his line up (aside for Man-Thing, of course). Matt Fraction has decided Juggy will be a bad guy again, and it doesn't matter that he was a major character in Parker's book; In terms of rep, Fraction > Parker, and that's how things roll. It never lasts, which is usually why I never like seeing those stories start in the first place.

- It looks like Brubaker will write a Steve Rogers back up strip in CAPTAIN AMERICA to keep the page count at 30 so the price can remain at $3.99. Interesting.

- The premise behind CAPTAIN AMERICA CORPS is almost intended to be a comedy, but there have really been so many characters with that name or similar that it is possible. I do wonder if this "cosmic entity" realizes that U.S. Agent is currently without an arm and a leg, or will this be some "time plucked" version from the past.

- I love how THE MIGHTY THOR #3 can't even show an image that is a cover or a barely drawn sketch of one random page, likely because Oliver Coipel on a monthly schedule is almost grounds for failure. He can have 56 months of lead in time, if you get more than 4 timely issues out of him, its a miracle.

- Two comics from the Marvel Vault; a Human Torch/Hulk comic, and 15 LOVE, which was first commissioned back in 2002 by Bill Jemas. At least the latter tries for a different audience.

- This ASM arc with Mr. Negative and Anti-Venom will actually be the first time I have paid to read a story about either. It should be interesting. New Wraith, too!

- SPIDER-GIRL is canceled with issue 8. That's admittedly two issues longer than YOUNG ALLIES, which also featured her. Arana 2.0 didn't find an audience. The struggles of any Spidey spin off continue. I am curious how VENOM will be selling by #4.

- ANNIHILATORS looks cool.

- It looks like FF will continue along the subplots started in FANTASTIC FOUR, just the title changed.

- The Marvel Universe seems unable to beat either Wolverine or Punisher. It always is funny how in said stories, the Marvel Universe suffers from a disease that saps their intelligence. Otherwise, well...Hawkeye could probably beat Wolverine if he had the right trick arrow.

- MYSTERY MEN, as the premise goes, is about the masked vigilantes of the 1920's and pre-WWII 1930's. I did some research, and naturally virtually all of Marvel's heroes debuted in the late 30's or after 1940. This seems to want to portray the group of heroes between the end of the Western era in the 1880's and the WWII period. Doesn't this mean that we'll have to change who the first heroes of Marvel were? Eh, retcons are odd beats. Why not go back further? Give us the superheroes of 1910? 1900? 1367?

- I won't be bothering with MOON KNIGHT. I have no interest Bendis making him more of a psychopath, only one beyond parody. He's Two-Face now, only with more personalities. Rather than flip a coin, he rolls a 6 sided die.

- I will be curious if HEROES FOR HIRE will reach issue 12. The first arc has had a strong premise, and it will be interesting seeing how Abnett & Lanning match it.

- IRON AGE looks iffy. Gage being on it is a plus, but I am not sure about it. It may depend on whim.
