Director Tim Story thinks bigger will be better on DVD. He cut his comic book movie, Fantastic Four, down to a fast-paced 105 minutes for its hit theatrical release, but he has proposed an extended cut of the movie, in addition to deleted scenes as an extra feature, for the DVD.

“I feel like now people have seen the kind of fast- paced ‘get in and out’ version,” Story said. “We’re talking [about] only a handful of scenes that I might put back into the movie just to allow the movie to breathe a little bit.”

Extended cuts have become more common as studios look for opportunities to create additional, sellable versions of the same film. Many directors take issue with the term “director’s cut,” insisting that adding more does not necessarily make the film better. But Story is okay with creating additional versions with films under the right conditions.

“I don’t mind that, as long as I have the say so of what [is put back in],” he said.

Fantastic Four tells the origin of the team of superheroes exposed to cosmic radiation in outer space, resulting in each one developing unique powers. Most of the film’s visual effects are on display in theaters, but Story said he has saved a few for his extended cut.

“There are a couple of things with special effects in them that we actually finished up and then [will] put into the movie, so it’ll be interesting to see how people respond to it,” he said.

To complement or offer an alternative to the extended cut, Story also has plans for the standard array of DVD extras for Fantastic Four.

“There are going to be a lot of deleted scenes and commentaries, and we’re going to have a lot of special effects features,” he said.

F4Movies.com got a chance to chat with Fantastic Four director Tim Story, who mentions the DVD and sequel. Here are several clips:

F4M: Was any footage held back specifically for a special edition of the dvd? Did you approach any material, in pre- or post-production, with the intent of adding to a dvd later? Also, do you know if fans will be able to expect any of the scenes that we saw in trailers or featurettes that did not make it to the final film on the dvd?
TS: I just mentioned some stuff with Ben Grimm and Alicia - they're sooooo touching. We did go back and finish some special effect in scenes so we could add them to the dvd. Several actually. I think the fans will have some well worthy surprises on the dvd.

I'd love to discuss a director's cut.....but we haven't seen one yet....LOL

As far as having a say in the DC....I would have rather him had SAY in what was put in and taken out of the ACTUAL MOVIE....

I'm really hoping for that Johnny Storm scene at the end of the film. I was fine with the Ben Grimm and Alicia parts not being there. But I really wanted that scene in the film. It was a strong part of his character arc, Johnny finally realizing the pain that he has been causing Ben which causes him to come back.

The other scenes, besides the Ben & Alicia, and completion of Johnny's character arc that I can't wait until are:

There is also the speech Von Doom makes before they take off into space that I loved because it showed Victor taking Reed's speech and using it as his own. Oh and the Victor & Susan dinner scene, which truly showed Victor's turn to evil.

I was watching it this afternoon and thinking how much better it would be if they simply blanked out the parts where Doom says: "You're fired" and "Marco Polo".

In fact, if I had anything to say about it, I'd sign on a good voice actor for the sequels and have him overdub some re-written dialogue for all the Doom-in-armor scenes.

That, combined with adding in some of the scenes that were dropped and maybe even going back and fixing some of the wrinkles in the Thing suit digitally could make a movie that would be markedly better than the original.

I want a director's cut not tampered by the hands of those Monkeys in Suits called Fox Executives. Daredevil was so much better given a Director's Cut. And yes, I do own both versions.

Daredevil is an extreme case. The theatrical version is only the bare bones of the film. So much story and substance is cut out, the cinema version is basically just the character introductions and action scenes. Whereas with FF, it's just a few scenes that were deleted.

Or another way to look at it; the version of FF released in cinemas is the proper version, a new version will actually be a new, extended cut. With DD, the version released in cinemas was not the proper version, it was a slimmed-down super-fast cut. The proper version was then re-instated for the 'Director's Cut' DVD (with a few differences made by MSJ).

Well, I just wish that Fox would wake up and realize if they want to keep movie franchises from tapering off, they'll need to devote more time to the quality of the script instead of relying too much on MTV-like movie pacing. I mean as much as I enjoy Fantastic Four, the story was just all over the place. I know it's an origin story but I hope, perhaps uselessly, more care will be taken in regards to sequels. Stories that are not carefully plotted that just add "really cool looking stuff" just for the sake of adding "really cool looking stuff" tend to be quite confusing. It also severely dates a film and doesn't give it too much of a lasting half life.

There is an alternate scene where Doom kills that one guy in the parking garage, it was used in the teaser trailer.

Wonder if they shot a shuttle launch or the return trip back to earth?

I wish the end battle could be a bit longer, it was cool but it was done & over with in a very short time.

Aside from more commentaries & special effects featurettes, I would also like it if they added a trivia track to the Director's Cut dvd.

4). Victor and Johnny's meeting...

7). Most all of Alicia and Ben's scenes...
8). Planetarium scene...
9). Bar scene w/ Johnny...
10). More of Sue and Reed in Victor's building before Doom makes himself known...
11). More of Victor actually watching the monitors...they way it looked all of the sudden he was watching monitors and we had no idea where they came from or how they got there....

So a few scenes were cut? i don't think so....

This is an interesting one because we saw clips of it in some early trailers, so we know the scene was shot, but it wasn't included as a deleted scene on any DVD's. That's just one example, and based on the script, there's a lot that we haven't seen in any form, but likely exists somewhere.

What about the scene in which Ben is looking into (Alicia's?) window and breaks the glass? I watched the deleted scenes from other regions last night, and, while there was a similar scene, he didn't break the glass.

I would guess that they've got enough footage to do at least three solid hours and still leave things like the Johnny elevator scene out (though that sort of made me laugh, and I wouldn't mind if it was put back in).

But I kinda like the way Julian McMahon said, "You're Fired!" I think Doom would have Donald Trump shaking in his expensive Italian shoes.

i liked Julian as Victor...i did not like Julian too much as Doom...part of it was of course the lame lines he had to say...and the other part was how he said them....there was no regalness behind his voice...yes maybe some work w/ the sound on his voice might have helped...but once he put the robe of Doom on.....he should have had a regal sounding voice that equaled the rob he put on....in my opinion he has the ability to play a great Doom....he just didn't show what he can do....

They could fix both problems in a few hours with a voice-over actor (who could be retained for future films).

Take out the "Chemistry 101" line. Take out the "Marco Polo" and "you're fired". In fact, a lot of the dialogue can simply be eliminated. It doesn't necessarily need to be replaced with anything.

Watch the scene in which he is looking for Sue, and imagine him just silently scanning the room. He doesn't need to make speaches, he doesn't need to make flip remarks, he could simply be silent and deadly. His intentions are obvious.

Fixing that scene could really do a lot toward increasing the intensity of the film.

Yes...definitely...i would keep the you're fired line though....to me its a great "book end" to the restaurant scene where he reminds her who she works for....you know that terrific scene that ended up on cutting room floor...

i would also throw out ALL of the his lines during the final battle, except maybe "you three are pathetic"....the "i'll be right w/ you" was just as lame.

A vast improvement on the visual effects with addition of those deleted scenes is welcome but i don't want to see Story/Fox to do 'a George Lucas' on the dvd.

Ya know...i'm almost afraid to see a DC.....i was furious at the deleted scenes that were left out....i have a feeling i'd get even more mad to see them in, and see how well they would have worked, and how much better the movie would have been.....i don't know......of course i want to see a DC......but i'm disappointed....

A director's cut is needed to demonstrate that Story actually did know what he was doing with the Fantastic Four. And that it was Fox who, once again (Daredevil anyone?) ruined it theatrically. MSJ had been ridiculed as ruining Daredevil, making it non-stop action film with no story; while in reality there was ALOT of story that Fox just didn't want in the movie. So, hopefully this DC will come soon. Story was the right man for the job, it was an excellant screenplay and story- Fox just did another "hack" job.

Fox sould never be allowed to make comic book movies again!!!

Why do they always screw them over by not give these the time & money they deserve. X-men, F4 & Daredevil have all been screwed with (i.e. budget, production time, etc).

The sooner Marvel can get the rights back the better.

And it's not just comic movies they screw, A v P, Alien 3, Kingdom of Heaven are just a few of the film that they have messed with.
