Default Awards and nominations

Well, it's award's season, so I thought I'd start a thread for the show and its actors. Hopefully, there will be more to add to this list in the coming months.

The Fourth Annual Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards announced their nominations last night (1/9/06) and SV was nominated for visual f/x in a series. The VES Awards, which honor visual effects in commercials and videogames as well as features and TV, will be announced 2/15/06 at the Hollywood Palladium.
Outstanding Visual Effects in a Broadcast Series
  • "Invasion" - "Origin of Species" - Armen Kevorkian, Matt Scharf, John Karner, Neil Sopata
  • "Rome" - Episode 1 - Barrie Hemsley, James Madigan, Duncan Kinnaird, Joe Pavlo
  • "Smallville" - "Commencement" - Mat Beck, John Wash, John Han, Trent Smith
http://www.variety.com/ac2006_articl...ryid=1985&cs=1

I think they've got a good shot at it!

The effects were generally good, especially for a tv budget.

They only give the award out for a single episode, not the whole season?

I agree. Actually, the first full episode of SV I ever watched was this season's premiere; now I've seen 1 and 2 via reruns and a lot of 3 and 4 on DVD. But, the longer a show is on, the more people begin to watch it, the more ad $ they get, the bigger the special effects budget can be. So you can probably expect 6 to go above and beyond this season.

Most award shows for TV take a sample episode for the nomination committee to vote on. The show selects the episode that is provided, and the F/X in Commencement were awesome.

I can understand them offering up that episode to the committee.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Couldn't very well make the voters watch every episode. And you're right, they chose a good episode.

Now that one is fantastic, not that the other one wasnt. But the DPs on Smallville do a wonderful job and I'm happy to see them recognised for it.

thats gonna be tough going up against Carnivale (my 2nd favorite show on TV) in that category. The cinematography on that show was unbelievable along with everything else.... God I hope that somehow comes back for a 3rd season...

It's nice that SV is getting nominated for secondary awards, but I don't think it's in the same class as some of the other show's it's up against in the "Hollywood political sense"............it's going to be tough.......Good luck to them.

WTH? I realize the sci-fi/fantasy genre is often overlooked for award consideration, and we're talking about a show on The WB, not HBO, but SV has WON quite a few awards from various industry committees and organizations - some top tier - and not just Hollywood-based. Top TV Series from ASCAP, Saturns for Supporting Actor (Rosenbaum) and DVD Television Programming, Compositing and Matte awards from VES, Leos (BC "Emmys") for Best Visual Effects and Best Make-up, and an Emmy for Sound Editing. This is in addition to the many other awards it was nominated for, which in itself is an accomplishment. So I think its chances are quite good in *any* category it's nominated for.

Compare SV's list of industry organizations it has received or won awards from to those of Gilmore Girls, 7th Heaven, and One Tree Hill. In terms of industry accolades both nominated or won, SV is The WB's flagship. If *any* show on The WB has a chance at winning something for quality programming, it's SV.

I wasn't talking specifically about WB's shows only, but the other's that are simply in the top tier of current television shows.........

Hmm... I guess I'm just not understanding what you're saying here then, Milkman.

What's a "secondary award?" Are you talking about the award itself (Nominees for "Best Use of Left-Handed Widgets on a Rainy Day Award" vs. "Best Drama"), or the recognized prestige of the organization bestowing the honor (Association for Film and Television Janitors vs. The Emmy Awards)?

Quote:
but I don't think it's in the same class as some of the other show's it's up against
The fact that it's being nominated alongside those shows kinda puts it in their class, no? Otherwise, some other show would have been nominated in its place, right?

Quote:
in the "Hollywood political sense"
Well that could apply to almost everything, and not just Hollywood. All sorts of factors influence how people vote, and accolades are not necessarily awarded for skill or excellence. So I *think* I got your gist here. But the sci-fi, fantasy and horror genre has come a long way. Up until ROTK, no sci-fi/fantasy film ever won an Academy Award for Best Film, so I think such programming is finally starting to be recognized alongside the more traditionally oriented (read: serious drama) kind of entertainment.

Quote:

Indeed! If it were an easy choice, it wouldn't be worth going through the nomination process.

Artistically, the photographers on Smallville are top tier.

They shoot what looks like mini movies every week on an episodic TV budget.

I think Glen Winter is a highly talented DP and has shot some of the more beautiful episodes. He shot both Splinter and Memoria, for example.

He is top tier talent and he shouldn't be dissed because he works for a netlet show instead of for a show on one of the majors.

Kristin Kreuk was nominated for OUTSTANDING FEMALE TELEVISION PERFORMANCE along with Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy), Yunjin Kim (Lost), and Parminder Nagra (ER). Kim won.

Here's the article:

'Kung Fu Hustle' Top Film at Asian Awards
Thu Jan 19, 11:58 PM ET

"Kung Fu Hustle" was named outstanding film and Daniel Dae Kim and Yunjin Kim, who star on the hit TV show "Lost," were honored for outstanding male and female TV performance at Thursday's 2006 Asian Excellence Awards.

Other winners include Stephen Chow for outstanding film performance in "Kung Fu Hustle" and Lynn Chen who won outstanding newcomer for her performance in the film "Saving Face."

"Kung Fu Hustle" beat out other nominees "Memoirs of a Geisha," "Saving Face" and "2046." In the female TV category, recent Golden Globes winner Sandra Oh of "Grey's Anatomy" and Kristin Kruek of "Smallville" were nominees.

The awards celebrate achievement in the arts and entertainment and individual contributions in advancing the profile of the Asian American community.

Several special honors were awarded during the ceremony. NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson presented the Inspiration Award to AIDS researcher Dr. David Ho; the Building Bridges Award went to writer-director Quentin Tarantino; the Visibility Award was given to actress Lucy Liu; and a lifetime achievement honor was posthumously awarded to producer Ismail Merchant, who died in May. Merchant worked on such films as "Howards End" and "The Remains of the Day."

The show was taped Thursday and will air on AZN Television on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m.
