Default NY theatre pulls United 93 trailer

Theater Pulls Trailer for 'United 93' Tue Apr 4, 11:46 AM ET

NEW YORK - A New York City movie theater has pulled the trailer for "United 93," which chronicles in real time the hijacked United Airlines flight that crashed into a Western Pennsylvania field on Sept. 11.

The AMC Loews Lincoln Square 12 theater in Manhattan said it made the decision after viewers complained they found it too upsetting.

"I don't think people are ready for this," theater manager Kevin Adjodha said.

"One lady was crying," Adjodha told Newsweek. "She was saying that we shouldn't have played the trailer. That this was wrong."

Universal Studios in Los Angeles, meanwhile, said it would go ahead with plans to show the trailer for the thriller, which is scheduled to open in theaters on April 28.

Adam Fogelson, Universal's president of marketing, said the trailer would be shown only before R-rated movies or "grown-up" PG-13 ones.

"The film is not sanitized or softened, it's an honest and real look" at the events of Flight 93, Fogelson told The New York Times in Tuesday editions. "If I sanitized the trailer beyond what's there, am I suggesting that the experience will be less real than what the movie itself is? We as a company feel comfortable that it is a responsible and fair way to show what's coming."

"United 93" is scheduled to make its world premiere on opening night at the Tribeca Film Festival in Manhattan.

The festival, which was created to help lower Manhattan recover economically from the attacks, begins April 25 and runs through May 7.

The trailer begins with images of passengers boarding the plane on a sunny morning, and builds to a disturbing scene that includes actual news video of a plane about to hit one of the World Trade Center towers. It then returns inside Flight 93 as terrorists begin hijacking it and a passenger calls his family to tell them of the impending disaster.

The Families of Flight 93 have said that Universal Pictures will donate 10 percent of the first three days' grosses to the memorial.

I figured something like this would happen.

Just wait until the movie actually releases.

In all reality the movie is too soon. It's opening up a lot of wounds up for the actual families who lost friends, families, and other loved ones in the tragedy that is September the 11th.

Maybe they should've waited at least another year or two to do this.

So now there's a movie coming out based on a made-for-tv movie that aired on the Discovery Channel?

It was really bad taste that the trailer was attached to V for Vendetta.

They may have to wait about 60 years like they did with Titanic.

10 percent of the first three days go to the memorial?!?! Why not just slap the families in the face.

I respect Paul Greengrass and like his work, but I think this whole movie is wrong. I think it will be disastrous.

What ticks me off the most, is that I bet the studio is bucking on controversy like in that report in order to sell the movie.

The film was made with the full cooperation of the families of those onboard.

this actually seems very interesting. But i know this is going to continue to happen.

My opinion: people should face it, and get over it. like the article said, it's real and honest.

in terms of movie making, i think it's about time someone did something like this. this whole 9/11 thing has effected many things in terms of movie making. There was that whole Spiderman thing with the posters, and reshoots. Influence was there for the Watchmen script by David Hayter. It seems you can't do much of anything without pissing someone off in movies now. I want to see a movie that upsets people, interests people, an honest movie.

the company may be bucking on controversy, but Greengrass doesnt come off like that. I respect him for that. Screw the company if that's how they think.

maybe it's the wrong time to make a movie like this, or maybe it's the right time for people to face what happened...again. Besides, if they canned this movie, and made another one several years from now, it would be some crap-fest titanic movie. I really like the "real time" idea, and the fact that like almost the entire cast is unknown.

When I saw the poster for this and Two Towers next to each other at my local theather, I got really pissed off. It hasnt even been a decade yet and two films are gonna be released this year. This is total bull****. You just know the studios are going to be banking on the controversy. Well I hope no one goes to see these movies. Its far too soon. It should have been at least 30 years before someone tries this.

It's just way too soon for TWO films to be released, that are dramatizing the events. You don't know what went on on that plane other than the small amount of info we have. It's just pathetic Hollywood is going to such lengths to make crappy TV movies about these things just to make a few bucks.

People have no problem watching dozens of documentaries about the 9/11 attacks, but get upset when a film is made that also shows what happened

If you think it is too soon or that you dont want to watch it... then dont.

There's a bit of a difference between documentaries and movies made by Oliver Stone.

Documentaries are meant to inform, movies, however, while they may inform, are, generally, for entertainment purposes. To turn such a tragic event into entertainment not even 10 years after the event...it becomes a bit demeaning.
