Default Ripping VHS to pc....

Ok so i have hooked up my vhs to my pc to record a tape onto it.

I can view the tape no problem for as long as i like, but when i hit record it does about 15 secs then goes to static! i thought at first this was the software i was using (ATI tv) but i tried it in windows movie maker and the same dam thing happened! Does any one know whats going on, or ripped a VHS to their pc in the past.

How do you hook it up to your pc in the first place?
