Default Who is more important in the directorīs chair?

What do you think is more important to have on a comic book movie helm?
A great director or a director that is a fan?
And no, you canīt have both....either you have a great director, that might be a fan or a fan that might be a great director.

I go with great director easily, because, more than not, a fan will just want to put things in the movie, and ends with a mess on his hands.
A great director will do some homework and get to understand what the hell is the doing.
You might say also that, a great director might have a enormous ego and want to do things his way, with little respect for the character is based on.
But, for starters, thatīs less and less true, the little respect part, that is..it if was in the 90īs it would have been totally diferent; second, even if thatīs the case, it might be awful, but in the bright side, we might end with a great movie on our hands.

Whether the director is a fan or not is completely irrelevent. A good director is a good director.

Bryan Singer was never an X-Men fan. Richard Donner was never a Superman fan. Tim Burton was never a Batman fan, nor was Chris Nolan. And so on.

Chris Nolan was a Batman fan. He included Bat symbols of two of his three films before BB, and was the one who approached WB about the project.

In any case, I'd say a great director is the most important. However, that director, whether a fan of the original comics or not, should be in love with the project he's undertaking.

I agree with CConn. It doesn't matter if they're a fan or not, just as long as they enjoy doing the project and take it seriously.

They don't have to be a fan before, but they definatley have to become a fan afterwards. Of course, any great director would do just that. If you're making a Batman movie, you better damn well read any Batman comic you can get your hands on.

So yeah, I'd take a great director over David Goyer.

I swear, Goyer gets slapped around more than Whitney Houston on...on...well, any day of the week, really.

yeah Paul Anderson was a Mortal Kombat fan and an Alien fan...look what happened. Jonathan Mostow was also a terminator fan.
But I really think a producer is what kills a movie. John Davis- predator 2, garfield 1&2!!!, AvP...the man should be shot. Joel Silver=good producer who picks decent directors....

A great director would research his project anyway, so being a fan IMO isn't a factor
