Here is a list of software alternatives for the typical commercial software (most you have to pay for) and the free alternatives that exist. These are the ones I personally use.
(Please note, each application has different capabilities, not all software replacements are perfect, you will have to judge for yourself. But those listed are extremely CLOSE matches if not almost perfect in nature.) For AIM, I suggest AIM Ad Hack. Leaves AIM exactly as it is minus the advertisements and added spyware:
