Default The Cult

So I'm reading one of the individual volumes and thinking "This is interesting. Maybe I'll get it." The cover price of the issue is about $4, maybe less.
4 vols, $12. OK. I go over to the graphic novel section the next time I'm in a store and see-- $30.00??? WTF?

The GL Rebirth hardcover is about the cost of the individual issues, so this took me by surprise.

Does the graphic novel have more than just the compilation? It was a sticker price, so maybe it was a markup....?

Also, it's pretty grim for a Batman story from the 80s, at least that was my impression. Does anyone actually know/remember its reception when it was released?

Batman The Cult was a 4-issue prestige format comic from 1988, each individual issue was $3.50 and the TPB will probably set you $19.99, I'm surprised to hear that you found it at $30.00 since it's pretty available and a newer printing came out a few years back.

Lucky for me I got each issue for $1.00 at a comic book convention a years back.

It's true that the story is pretty grim and gritty but then so were the regular Batman comics of the 80's, I don't remember what kind of attention the fans gave this but I've read that some have mixed feeling about it.

Although this book is pretty good in that some villian named Deacon Blackfire actually broke down the Batman, not in a literal sense like Bane in Knightfall but more pshycologically.

I think it's a staple for Batman fans, if only for that reason. Something that we sometimes laugh at in other people, happened to Batman. And Deacon shares similarities to Rhas, including his own, far more distrubing version of a Lazarus Pit.

I'll double-check the price the next time I go in.

EDIT: It's $20. Maybe there was LSD in the coffee I was drinking at the time.
