Competition in '08 for TIH

So far these are the movies set for release in summer '08:

The Dark Knight
Iron Man
The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
James Cameron's Avatar
Watchmen

And other movies not quite confirmed but expected in summer '08 are:

Wolverine
Jurrassic Park 4
Indianna Jones 4
Wonder Woman

And there are probably ones i have missed. Thats some big competition for a sequel to an underperforming movie, that wont even have its cast members back (or so it seems). I know it wont go up against Iron Man as Marvel wouldnt do that, but it will be compared to it.

Well Joss Whedon is directing WW, and i cant wait to see it, i LOVED Firefly and Serenity.

I liked Serenity as well. I haven't seen Firefly.

Yeap exactly. Last thing they need is the film to be trapped inside the wake of a bigger hit and not get much attention and then get it's attention stolen by another film starting 2 weeks after it.

Honestly, I think if the competition was the most terrible movies in the world,TIH would still be screwed. Only hard-core fans are gonna go see it after the way the 1st flopped., which is pretty sad because it sounds like TIH will rule all.

I'd be okay with that, but i think it will have some pretty big competition then also, isnt the first installment of His Dark Materials out then?

If hulk is released next to TDK then it stands a chance to make some good $$$ because people will definitely choose a light, day action movie over a dark one no matter how famous the character is.

unfortuantly, the incredible hulk is a lock to dissappoint and probably bomb just bevcause of awefuly recieved the originasl was.

if this is good, itll have good legs, good dvd sales, and sequel will see big as increase. thats all we can hope for.

dont expect anything near 150 milion for this....im thinking....assuming its good as i like the director choice......30/135, around 280-300 imllion worldwide, good dvd sales, and then the sequel will see a 60-70 million opening weekend.

Both of the studios that agreed to co-finance the screen adaptation of the popular Microsoft game have abruptly backed out of the picture. While rumors had the studios concerned over a budget that was rising above the original projected $135 million pricetag, the filmmakers said the double defection came after U and Fox played hardball and unsuccessfully tried to get the filmmakers and Microsoft to reduce their profit participation.

The studios made the pay cut demand as a Oct. 15 deadline approached. On that day Microsoft was to have received the bulk of a promised $5 million upfront payday. Software giant also stood to receive 10% of gross for rights to the game and a script by Alex Garland.

Rumors of a budget that could approach $200 million raged Thursday, but Ken Kamins, who reps Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, vehemently denied that figure. The duo came aboard as exec producers, joining powerhouse producers Mary Parent, Scott Stuber and Peter Schlessel.

"The only budget the filmmakers every spoke about was $145 million less the 12.5% rebate that you get from shooting in New Zealand, which would put it at about $128 million," Kamins said. "That was the only number that was ever discussed.

"What happened was this: Universal, on behalf of both studios, asked for a meeting with the filmmakers just prior to the due date of a significant payment. Basically, they said that in order to move forward with the film, the filmmakers had to significantly reduce their deals. They waited until the last minute to have this conversation. Peter and Fran, after speaking with their producing partners and with Microsoft and Bungee (the studio that designed the original game), respectfully declined."

While the exit of two studios would seem to imperil "Halo," Kamins said Microsoft is already in talks with other distribution partners. Prep work on the film continues, he said. One advantage is having Jackson and Walsh as exec producers: Most of the pre-production is being done at their visual effects studios in New Zealand, Weta Digital and Weta Workshop, so there will be no stoppage.

As word of the U and Fox exit spread, speculation centered around the inexperience of "Halo" helmer Neill Blomkamp, a 27-year-old first-time feature director.

"Everybody is supremely confident in Neal," Kamins said. "Part of what excited Peter and Fran was Neal's vision. We're very confident this film will move forward with the creative partners intact, who will take the film to production."

Speed Racer Reloaded

“Matrix” creators Larry and Andy Wachowski have headed down to the pits to pump new life into “Speed Racer”, a film that’s been languishing in development hell for the better part of a decade now, says Variety.

The Wachowskis, who will write and direct the film, have re-teamed with “Matrix” producer Joel Silver for the movie – which Vince Vaughan has long been attached to star in.

Based on the classic 1960s series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida that later was retooled for North American audiences, the big-screen "Speed" will follow the adventures of the young race car driver Speed in his quest for glory in his thundering gadget-laden vehicle, Mach 5. The movie will feature other characters from the show, including Speed's family and his mysterious archrival, Racer X.

Silver has been trying to get the film version off the ground since the early 1990s; in 2004, Vince Vaughn even pitched a take that cast him as Racer X. When Silver worked on "V for Vendetta" with the Wachowskis, he approached them about tackling the project. The duo were reluctant to do it unless they could figure out a way to bring something new to the table.

"They are approaching these racing scenes in a way you've never seen before," said Silver, adding that the brothers are designing the movie's look as they write.

"They wanted to do something that could appeal to everybody," Silver said.

The plan is for the Wachowskis to shoot in summer 2007 for a summer 2008 release.

This one could be a freaking blast. I'll be in line for sure.

Now "The Happening" with Mark Wahlberg directed by M.Knight is going up against The Hulk. This is good. It's a perceived threat that will fill up the spot and make the date appear more crowded than it really is. Marky Mark is a great actor but he's not a box office draw and M.Knight's gimmicky scripts are getting tired and the fans are not coming out like they used to. Still it should generate some attention but the Hulk will totally annihilate it on that date. The Happening should be a Winter release but that's it's problem. I was afraid a bigger film might try to move in on it...now that's highly unlikely.

Shymalyan is not Pixar. The Incredible Hulk should beat The Happening with ease.
