Default PS3: What Sony Should Have Done

I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THE 'PS3' FIASCO, AND HOW ALL THE PROBLEMS 'SONY'S EXPERIENCED COULD'VE/SHOULD'VE BEEN AVOIDED. THIS IS JUST ONE CONSUMER'S OPINION.........TAKE IT HOWEVER YOU WANT.

THINK BACK TO THE 'PS2', WHICH UNDOUBTEDLY MADE 'SONY' THE "KING OF THE CONSOLE MARKET". SURE, IT LAUNCHED A YEAR AFTER THE 'DREAMCAST', SIMILAR TO HOW THE 'PS3' IS (POSSIBLY) GOING TO LAUNCH A YEAR AFTER THE '360'. THAT MUCH IS OBVIOUS. IT ALSO HAD ALOT OF HYPE (FED BY THE 'SONY' MACHINE), SURROUNDING IT'S (SUPPOSED) GRAPHICAL PROWESS, MADE POSSIBLE WITH A "REVOLUTIONARY AND FUTURE-PROOF" NEW CHIP.......THE "EMOTION ENGINE" (CELL, ANYONE?). SO FAR, SO "DEJA VU".
BUT WHAT'S MISSING? WHAT KEY COMPONENT IS DIFFERENT, THAT NOT ONLY WAS THE PRIMARY REASON 'SONY' DOMINATED LAST GEN, BUT IS ALSO THE LARGEST FACTOR IN THEIR FLIRTING WITH FAILURE/DISASTER FOR THE NEXT? THREE LETTERS: .
THE VERY FORMAT THAT LAUNCHED THEM TO STARDOM, AND IS STILL THE
WORLDWIDE STANDARD IN MEDIA FORMAT, AND LIKELY TO REMAIN THAT WAY FOR A FEW MORE YEARS.......'SONY' TURNS IT'S BACK ON.

NOW, BEFORE WE GO INTO 'BLU-RAY', LET'S REWIND TO PRE-PS2......CIRCA 1996-97(DEPENDING ON REGION) TO THE BIRTH OF THE DVD FORMAT. FIRST OF ALL, IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT 'SONY'......IN TYPICAL 'SONY' TRADITION.....WAS PUSHING FOR ANOTHER FORMAT, OVER DVD.....ONE OF THEIR OWN.........BUT ULTIMATELY LOST OUT. IRONIC, CONSIDERING HOW IT WAS ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PS2'S SUCCESS (IF YOU THINK IT WAS THEIR "GAME LIBRARY".....THINK AGAIN).
NEARLY 4 YEARS LATER, AFTER THE "KINKS" HAVE BEEN WORKED OUT, AND THE PRICE OF THE KEY COMPONENTS HAVE DROPPED CONSIDERABLY, 'SONY' LAUNCHES IT'S DVD-BASED 'PS2' (SOMETHING SEGA DIDN'T DO, AND IT COST THEM DEARLY).
PROMOTING IT AS THE ULTIMATE HOME ENTERTAINMENT HUB (SOUND FAMILIAR?), AND TOUTING A PRICE THAT WAS IN-LINE WITH, OR CHEAPER THAN ANY OF THE TOP STAND-ALONE DVD PLAYERS CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET ("AND IT WILL PLAY ALL YOUR CURRENT AND FUTURE 'SONY' GAMES, AND MUSIC AS WELL!"), 'SONY' QUICKLY TOOK OVER THE DVD AND CONSOLE MARKET, IN ONE FELL SWOOP. THE REST IS HISTORY.

FAST FORWARD TO OUR CURRENT SITUATION. 'SONY' NOT ONLY HAS FORSAKEN THE DVD FORMAT, BUT THEY'VE (ONCE AGAIN) "BET THE FARM" ON A BRAND NEW, UNPROVEN, UNTESTED FORMAT, THAT MAY NOT HAVE A VIABLE MARKET FOR AT LEAST 2-3 YEARS......IF EVER (SEE- MINI-DISK, DAT, UMD, BETAMAX) . THEY ALSO ARE PARTNERED IN R&D, AND MANUFACTURING OF THE NEW BLU-RAY DRIVES.....FURTHER ADDING TO THE RISK, AND RAPING THEIR STOCKHOLDERS SEVERELY. NOT TO MENTION, THE EQUALLY AS RISKY IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW "CELL" CHIP, WHICH HAS SIMILAR (IF NOT A BIT MORE PROMISING) IMPLICATIONS.

*CONTINUED BELOW...

Default Re: PS3: What Sony Should Have Done

NOW, WITHOUT DIGGING UP A BUNCH OF NEWS LINKS, I THINK IT'S SAFE TO SAY SOME THINGS HAVE NOT BEEN GOING, AS PLANNED, FOR 'SONY'. LARGELY BROUGHT UPON THEMSELVES, THEY'VE HAD ONE MISSTEP AFTER ANOTHER, WITH DELAYS AND MANUFACTURING ISSUES, NOT ONLY WITH THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS OF CELL AND BLU-RAY, BUT ALSO WITH THE OVERALL PRODUCT. IF THEY LAUNCH IN NOVEMBER, WITH LESS INSTANCES OF FAILURE THAN THE '360'........WHICH USES "CURRENT", BUT "FUTURE-PROOF" COMPONENTS..... IT WILL BE NOTHING SHORT OF A MIRACLE.

SO, MY WHOLE POINT TO ALL OF THIS (YES, THERE IS ONE), IS SIMPLE: 'SONY' SHOULD HAVE WAITED ON 'BLU-RAY'. PERIOD.

THEY STILL COULD'VE GONE WITH 'CELL', AND STILL HAD BRAGGING RIGHTS ON "THE MOST POWERFUL NEXT-GEN CONSOLE" (AT LEAST IN THEORY). THEY COULD'VE LAUNCHED WITH DVD-9.......WHICH IS STILL GOING STRONG WITH THEIR PS2'S, AND HAS YET TO INHIBIT CONTENT FOR THE '360'......AND MADE THE BLU-RAY VERSION AVAILABLE A YEAR OR 2 LATER.

THEY STILL COULD HAVE BEEN TESTING THE MARKET THROUGH THEIR 'VAIO' LINE, STAND-ALONE PLAYERS, AND PC DRIVES.

THEY STILL COULD HAVE HAD THE CHEAPEST BR PLAYER ON THE MARKET (LIKE THEY MARKETED THE PS2).......ASSUMING THE FORMAT HAS A FUTURE.

THEY STILL COULD HAVE HAD A "NEXT GEN" ANSWER TO THE '360'.......WITHOUT THE OUTRAGIOUS PRICE AND EMBARASSMENT.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY.......THEY COULD HAVE LAUNCHED ON TIME ; NOT IN NOVEMBER, WITH A PITIFUL # OF UNITS AVAILABLE, AND BY SCREWING EUROPE.....BUT THIS PAST SPRING/SUMMER, LIKE THEY ORIGINALLY PROMISED.

'SONY', YOU NEED TO TAKE A FEW STEPS BACK, AND RE-EVALUATE WHAT YOU'VE DONE, WHAT YOU'VE SAID, WHAT YOU'VE PROMISED AND FAILED TO DELIVER ON.........AND ADMIT THAT YOU F***ED UP. STOP MAKING EXCUSES. STOP CHANGING THE SUBJECT WHEN ASKED "WHY?". STOP LYING, AND MAKING CLAIMS, THAT YOU HAVE NO POSSIBLE WAY OF SUBSTANTIATING. STOP BLAMING OTHERS, AND PATTING YOURSELF ON YOUR BACKS, FOR THE "POTENTIAL" YOU ARE BRINGING TO THE WORLD. IF YOU FAIL, YOU ONLY HAVE YOURSELVES TO BLAME.

Here's The Same Post For Caps Challenged People...(kind of )

If You Fail, You Only Have Yourselves To Blame.

in honestly i dont think the ps2 launched the dvd boom, it did that only towards the gaming consumer market. for the everyday/casual/non gamer it was more about the format itself. not only was the ps2 dvd unclusion not only a huge boom for the gaming market but it was also sony's games.( theres no way anyone can deny that), if that was'nt the case then everyone would be in love with nintendo's kiddiness.
