Default LANL Supercomputer to use PS3 processor.

The labs are close to where I live so I thought this was kind of interesting.

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - IBM has won a contract to build what could become the world’s fastest supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The supercomputer will use the processor developed for the PlayStation 3 video game system, which is due out in November.
The U.S. Department of Energy says the Roadrunner supercomputer could be capable of running up to a quadrillion – 1,000,000,000,000,000 – calculations per second

Good, this is the sort of thing the CELL is aimed at.

Thank goodness it's a highly suped-up version. Otherwise those laboratories would never get work done.

Certain processors are better suited for certain tasks. That's why you don't see SPARC's in PCs, but you see them in server racks all the time. The CELL was built for more specialized computing, not the general computing that the 360 and Wii CPUs are built for. Specialized stuff like this for example. And regardless, this article is about a CELL, not the PS3's CELL, "kobtv" should learn the difference, and this article doesn't really belong in this forum, having nothing to do with sony gaming...
