According to ContactMusic.com (via Egotastic!), critics and early viewers of THE BLACK DAHLIA have a complaint: Scarlett Johansson's sex scene is steamy to the point of distraction.
That actually replaced my main interest which was the return of Brian De Palma

Isn't Johannsan, Kay? And Swank is Madeline? Those two don't have sex.

Am I the only one who thinks Hilary's kinda too old to be Madeline?
Who else read the book?

I don't know what rottentomatoes said when this thread started, but it must not have been it's current 37%. Another fall 2006 film bites the dust. And some people were predicting Oscar nods for this one.

Damn.
It had something like 100% at first, but 30%?

I might reconsider and see Gridiron Gang instead.

Guys, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there's no sex scene with Scarlett that I can remember. Just a brief glimpse to part of her breast, and a good look at both Josh and Hilary's asses while naked in bed.
The movie isn't great, quite faithful to the book, but it suffers of looking fake, even due to the female leads' acting that tries to emulates the acting in the noir movies of the '40s.

I was kind of expecting it to be bad. The cast is just all wrong. Plus Hartnett is like cancer. Please tell me his character isn't in Sin City 2.

I just got back from seeing it, and while it wasn't great, it certainly wasn't terrible like everyone's making it out to be.

The first hour or so is quite entertaining. The pacing is solid, the acting is believable, the outfits and set pieces perfectly evoke the time, and everything moves along nicely.

But it's when things start to get interesting that everything slowly begins to fall apart. The second half of the film (around the time Swank's character enters the scene and
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
K.D. Lang shows up for a brief cameo
), the film heads down the wrong path, and despite a few strong sequences
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Eckhardt's character's death in particular is quite gripping and well shot
, it is undertoned by dull attempts at dark humor that often veer into camp territory (
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
there is a particularly excruciating though somewhat amusing dinner scene in which Hartnett's character dines with Swank's disfunctional family
). The last 15 minutes of the film almost makes up for the weak points, but still has some problems.

Performance-wise, Eckhardt and Scarlett gave the best performances. They are the only ones who remained genuinely solid throughout (though Scarlett got saddled with poor dialogue and minimal screentime, but she made the most of it). Hartnett had his weak points but was decent enough. Mia Kirshner as the murder victim Elizabeth Short is also commendable. Swank was the weak link IMO. Her accent is dreadful in some spots and she just isn't seductive in any sense of the word to pull off the part.

The costumes and scenery are excellent. They perfectly capture the essence of the time period.

Overall, I'd give it a 7 / 10.

yeah....movie wasnt that great....dont see what all the critics were fussing about in regards to scarletts 'sex scene'. the movie begins to fall apart about half way through....then it just gets really confusing and messy....then we come to the end which is almost laughable.

THANK YOU! They made way too big a deal of it IMO.

Elizabeth Short's porno film was far worse.

I can't believe that Hartnett can carry a movie or a role like this.
