"Star Wars" or "Episode IV: A New Hope"
Which do you call the original? Being that the movies in the prequel trilogy have gone by the episode first.

I believe only 'STAR WARS' appeared on the opening crawl and it was only after the film's extreme success and a sequel was planned that they went back and added the episode number.
The new DVDs that come out today should let us know for sure since they contain the original, non-SE theatrical version. Star Wars is pretty self contained because they weren't sure of its success (like the Matrix), but obviously they left plenty of room for more of the story to be told. |

Well when I saw it in theaters in 1977 and as a little kid it was just "Star Wars". It wasn't "Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope". It wasn't "Star Wars A New Hope". Just plain old "Star Wars".

I used to call it Star Wars, as the other films were simply The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
However, the prequels were marketed as 'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace', 'Star Wars Episode II: Attacl of the Clones,' etc. So now you have to be specific. You could even argue that the true title of the 1999 movie is Star Wars Episode I, and The Phantom Menace is the subtitle.

from what i've read...george wanted "episode IV - a new hope" on the crawl but distributors wouldn't go for it.....after the popularity over it though they caved, hence the "episode V - the empire strikes back" was in the crawl...
and i just call it "star wars"

It's Star Wars to me. Empire is Empire...Return of the Jedi is Return of the Jedi.....and the prquels are episodes 1,2, and 3.
