When did I say he did? I know you're an older dude, but don't get so offended when age is taken into consideration. It is very relevant here, especially if they're talking sequels.

I admit I am not really up on Iron Man, but it would seem appropriate to cast someone in their late 20's to early 30's.

Iron man 3 - Downey is 47-48

I wasn't offended at all....if you see my response in another thread, you'll see that I readily admit that most comic characters should be played by teenagers or people in their 20's.

Iron Man is currently portrayed in the comics as being 41 or 42 years old. He is a self made billionaire industrial weapons designer....hardly what you think of as someone in their 20's or 30's....but more in their late 30's to early 40's.

Great choice, 20 times better than the casting of Ledger as The Joker.

I voted yes, he wasn't who I had in mind before-hand but I really think this could work great.

Not necessarily.

Hollywood needs to steer their CBMs away from the obvious pop confectioned choices they've been making of late and cast some people of depth in these roles. Young age is not always of consequence (as evidenced in the example of Tobey Maguire, Hugh Jackman, etc.,) but a mature actor can bring a certain level of solidarity and backbone to a character a la Ian McKellan's Magneto for example.

Robert Downey Jr. is a step in the right direction.

As far as sequels are concerned, he could easily pass the mantle off to War Machine in the 3rd sequel and the franchise could easily continue on. It's really not that deep.

Plus Tony Stark was one of the few middle-aged heroes in the comics.

Downey is pretty much dead-on casting IMO. Besides, won't this be the only stand-alone Iron Man movie? I thought the franchise will continue with the Avengers movie?

You see, Harvey Dent is half-white side and half-dark side. So you cant make him to look like half-black side and half-dark side, because it wouldn't work right.

Seriously, Ledger has the look, face, smile and even hair of Joker. He can act and he has right age for this role.

I don't think Bettany or Hulme could both be better choices than Ledger.

I say this to whoever says Downey isn't a good choice

He doesn't need to be good looking to be a playboy every woman wants a piece of. Trump gets the wimmenz all the time and he's uglier then sin.

Besides, like somebody else said in this thread, they'll probably put him on a workout and diet plan, so he'll look more like Stark. Plus, make up can take years off.

Seriously, I disagree on all levels; but technically this is a matter to be discussed elsewhere. Not here.

Let's get back to Iron Man.

I'm getting the same kind of vibe from this one as when Michael Keaton was announced as Batman. I see no reason why this peice of casting will not turn out to be just as canny.

Posted these elsewhere, but thought they'd be appropriate here too. These are recent shots of the actor.....

I think RDJ is a brilliant bit of casting! bravo, Favreau! And the sad thing is, there are some on here who'd probably rather have Justin Timberlake!!!

Some people may think there are better actors out there to play Stark, but can anybody really say he is a bad choice???
Hes a great actor + looks the part so how can he even be considered a bad choice??

He's a great choice! Marvel gets another good actor for the lead role. So far they're batting about 500. Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, Blade were all good choices. Dare Devil and FF not so much.

Lately DC is more like 333. Decent with Batman, horrible for Superman and Catwomn. Let's hope the wise up with WW.

Again, I bring up the Brad Pitt argument. This dude is two years older than Downey, yet they rally for him to play Captain America. Pitt doesn't look his age, but he's still an old ass.

Horrible choice, the man looks like a drug addict, not an alcoholic. Hopefully computers can help that look. I'm hoping that the armor and mask stay on him for a good 90% of the film, and he has some synthesized voice so we don't have to hear him.

Honestly, I could be mistaken and will reserve final judgement after I see it. Toby Mcguire surprised me with his performance as Peter Parker.

I am not super happy with the choice, but not mad either.
I just think that Robert Downey Jr. was a random choice. He wasn't even the last person on my mind for the role.

Too early to tell.

Isn't Robert Downey in his forties?
I wish he was younger as well.
Hopefully there will be sequels. Iron Man is my favorite Marvel hero.

A bisexual Iron man? That's just great. I guess that's one superhero movie I won't be seeing.

Eh, if he did look like an alchohalic he'd have a big red caulyflower shaped nose and ears.
