Adriana Barraza is in negotiations to join the cast of Marvel Studios' "Thor," being directed by Kenneth Branagh.

The movie centers on Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the god of thunder, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, he is cast down to Earth and forced to live among the humans. Once there, he learns what it takes to be a hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade.

Details are scarce, but Barraza will play one of the humans. She joins a supporting cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Idris Elba and Kat Dennings.

The movie begins shooting next week at Marvel's Manhattan Beach, Calif., studios.

Barraza, repped by Innovative Artists and Magnolia Entertainment, was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in 2006's "Babel." The Mexico-born actress' most recent English-language appearance was in Sam Raimi's "Drag Me to Hell.

Why am I getting the feeling that this movie is going to have a really cool Asgard section then get bogged down in a boring "relate to humans" middle then get awesome when he punches stuff in the end?

Well, it's clearly gonna have a lot more to do with humans than we initially thought. You don't hire Stellan Skarsgard just to play some bit part. Hopefully the human stuff is as engaging as the superhero/myth stuff. They've managed it in the comics and humanity has, of course, been an important part of Thor for his entire existence.

He got the chop. He turned up 6 hours late for a costume fitting. But it must of been the final nail in the coffin after a series of events. I doubt he'd get sacked just for one incident.

I'd be cool with the Wrecking Crew, but Gatt would be perfect for the Absorbing Man. Then again, they could be anything from trolls to common, modern-day criminals, so I doubt we'll be able to guess with any accuracy.

I reckon he thought the role was bigger than it actually was. Thus the bad attitude of turning up late and the like.

wow! that mattey guy looks huge. and he's 6'10" ??? and interestingly, he ahs been rehearsing since oct. Def has to be a villian IMO

If that's not a frost giant, I dont know what is lol. Nice to see a director who knows how to cast good actors and also good "action/stunt/motion capture" actors as well.
