Awesome!! The last trailer I saw that was as bada$$ as this one was probably 300!! Either Lionsgate or Screen Gems should really pick this up to distribute already.

Wow, that was really impressive. Much better than I was expecting. The director certainly has a good eye for visuals. Lets hope the comic-con response makes the film more attractive to distrubutors.

Van Helsing has no balls, this has balls to it.
Besides, Helsing's "Pilgrim" look was ripped off of Solomon Kane anyway. |

Van Helsing is a joke. It's a weightless movie that can't even hold a candle to Solomon Kane. This trailer clearly shows that this will be a film with much more depth.
Also, here's hoping(I'm optimistic) that Marcus Nispel's Conan will look this good. Or even better. |

Well, the film will be presented at the Toronto Film Festival this September. This will hopefully raise more awareness and more critical acclaim. As I understand, so far, no less than 5 U.S. distributors are showing some interest in the movie, as it has been screened in LA alot.
P.S. I just recieved my "Saga of Solomon Kane" tpb!! If you have the "Savage Sword of Conan" tpb, you'll love this one too. Last edited by rogue trooper; 08-18-2009 at 02:24 PM. |

New article: http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/692108
Not your average action hero ![]() SUPPLIED PHOTO James Purefoy as the taciturn hero of Solomon Kane, which has its world debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Just like his character in Solomon Kane, actor James Purefoy is a bit of a mystery Sep 08, 2009 04:30 AM Rob Salem Entertainment Columnist When James Purefoy is good, he is very, very good – as he was in the charitably short-lived NBC summer series The Philanthropist. But when he is bad, he is ... conflicted. The British Purefoy is best known here for Rome and his macho portrayal of Mark Antony, the rock star of his ancient era, Julius Caesar's most trusted ally and, ultimately, debauched, despised betrayer. Purefoy is similarly torn in Solomon Kane, which has its world debut this year at TIFF's Midnight Madness series, next Wednesday night at the Ryerson Theatre, with a repeat screening the next day at 3:15 p.m. at the Scotiabank. "It's relatively simple," the actor explained after the warmly received Kane preview panel at the recent San Diego Comic-Con. "He starts off as a bad guy and has to seek redemption after ... this guy tells him he's going to go to hell. And he decides, no, that's not going to happen and then spends two years in a monastery, trying to atone for his sins. And then everybody gets chucked out of the monastery and he goes on a journey ... "Completely not your average action hero," he laughs. "He doesn't speak much – he's quite Eastwood-esque in that way – so we spent a lot of time stripping away dialogue and making sure that he was forced to talk, rather than offering it up. And that's always interesting, because that's somebody you want to find out more about, because they are not telling you who they are." Not at all surprising, Kane having emerged from the mind of pulp novelist Robert E. Howard, creator of the similarly non-verbal Conan the Barbarian. And who better than Purefoy to portray him: an actor who, for various reasons, none of them a lack of talent, barely missed out on such iconic roles as James Bond, Simon (The Saint) Templar, Harry Flashman and the mysterious masked hero of V for Vendetta. "The thing about Solomon Kane is that he has to be a masculine presence," says writer/director Michael J. Bassett, "and there are very few genuinely masculine actors around these days. I didn't want a kid, I wanted somebody who had seen the world, carried a little bit of weight – mentally, not physically. "James wasn't initially in the front of my mind for Kane," he confesses, "because he has a sort of contemporary vibe. But seeing Rome, and the fantastic work he did in that, and then getting him in and showing him the artwork and talking to him about the character, and that conversation evolving the character to new places ... "This is a man driven by an obsessive need to be the hand of God. I wanted the movie to be serious, not glib, not ironic ... it's absolutely a serious take on heroic fantasy adventure." The Kane debut will be Purefoy's second trip to the Toronto festival; he was here 10 years ago for Women Talking Dirty. "I love Toronto," Purefoy enthuses. "I love Canada. I like the people. I like their sense of who they are, of what kind of country they are." Our sense of who he is may be a little less clear – and that's the way Purefoy wants it. "I've always done that (intentionally)," he says, "always, always, always. I've never wanted to be pigeonholed. I like the idea that people go, `Was that really the same guy in The Philanthropist?'" Or, more commonly, the same guy from Rome. The elaborately historical cable drama, over only two seasons, had an indelible and enduring impact on viewers. "People love that show," Purefoy says, smiling. "They just love it. It was supposed to run three seasons. The third season was supposed to be all set in Egypt. I don't know why it was cancelled." Still, there are lots of other battles to fight, other heroes and villains (and sometimes a bit of both) to play. "Lots of different pieces and lots of different parts," Purefoy affirms. "That's the secret." |

Sounds good. I've always liked Purefoy in the things I've seen him in... I think he's one of those actors with the talent to pull off a huge role but for whatever reason, has been passed over. Hopefully he'll have some success with this one. It certainly sounds dark and serious, which would make it the opposite of Van Helsing, despite a similar looking hero character.

Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) was just a ripoff of Solomon Kane anyway.
Remember, Van Helsing in Dracula the novel was an elderly professor.

That's the key to the character. That and his determination and wanderlust. Get those right, you got the character. I'm not sure how they'll make it work. Part of Solomon's appeal is his mystery. Making him like Xena, where he's atoning for past mistakes sounds off (thats what I heard this was).
