That's why I think he became obssessed with Oswald so quickly. And fell in love with Catwoman so quickly too. His loneliness is at his max there. By the end I think he was trusting he could save the city as an actual protector and not by revenge and that he could find true love and reach a fine retirement. But he couldn't.
That's an excellent analysis. I never thought about it that way and it really makes sense.

They're both orphans who appear to be selfless & out for good. But really they're just interested in revenge & making themselves feel better. Shreck is a warped version of Bruce. They're both important billionaire businessmen. But while Shreck wants to drain the life out of Gotham, it is Gotham which has drained the life out of Bruce Wayne.

And then there's Selina/Catwoman. She is Bruce/Batman's mirror image. Like Bruce in B'89, she wants to kill the man who created her. Bruce wants to prevent her from going down the same path that he went after he killed Joker. Revenge doesn't take the pain away, it only makes it worse. In the end, it is through these individuals that Bruce realizes what he is allowing himself to become (a villain himself) & he hopes for redemption, which he doesn't get.
Again another excellent analysis. And this is mentioned throughout the movie. The Penguin thing is mentioned by Schreck when he tells Bruce that had it not been for Oswald's misfortune they could have been school buddies. And of course Bruce himself tries to help her from going down the same path.
It's the great that the more we talk about BR the more layers and subt-text we find out about it. It is such a fantastic movie.

Another great Keaton figure:

You know what makes Keaton awesome? It never feels like he's phoning it in. Even being in movies like Herbie, he still seems to be completely into his role and determined to flesh it out the best way possible.
Which is kind of ironic to me when some people criticize his performance in Batman or Batman Returns. I's not that he's being more subdued because he's a terrible actor--that's just what the part calls for. He can obviously play all along the spectrum of acting and it's a shame that he's been getting pretty worthless films lately.
BTW, has anyone seen "The Company?" It's with him, Alfred Molina, and...somebody else. Don't know if it's good or not.

The guy fit Batman's psyche and attitude so well (despite the viciousness), that it truly helps overcome his physical shortcomings. Until I found the internet, I never even noticed Keaton was average height. I really didn't. They don't show his build, so we're not given to assuming he's NOT buffed under the suit.

The guy was incredible in the role, no doubt about it. If for nothing else, than even just for the fact that he changed so many people's minds by doing it, and shocking so many people by proving there was more to him than comedy.
Man, I loved the guy in the role. But he just ain't Bruce Wayne. Bob Kane and Bill Finger made concrete the image of Bruce by mixing Dracula and James Bond. Michael Keaton never struck me as such. The closest he ever came off as Bruce to me was that ONE scene in Returns when he's at the Maxsherade ball with Selina. And as much as I hate to say it. . . George Clooney was a better Wayne than Michael Keaton. Which is sad . . . I still feel that Clooney could have been a better Batman given the right director. But to this day Keaton takes the win as Batman from the previous series.
I respect that you have your own opinion and that you are a Batman fan . . . to some extent. I just wish you had more to cut your teeth on than that movie.

Keaton was fantastic. Yet at the same time, he's certainly not at my boy Bale's level. YEEEEAH!!!

Both interpretations are valid and should be enjoyed as expression's of their creator's vision. Burton imagined a world full of grotesque (meaning larger than life) characters inhabiting a city which was itself a character in the film. Burton's films could not stray from their Gotham setting, or indeed acknowledge the existence of the outside world because Gotham was the films' only reality. Keaton, by not being the conventional choice for "Batman" was ideally cast in the role. Expecting a kinetic clownish performance, we instead get one anchored in stillness. Keaton draws attention to himself by not moving unless necessary and then with a purposefulness and singleness of action that requires us to focus our attention on him. IMHO, Keaton's performance was the rock that allowed Nicholson to be the wild card in the story. Batman was always about control vs chaos, and Keaton was able to convey that idea to its very core.

Nolan's approach, rather than make a film where Batman fit in as another player in a hyper-realistic world, was to make a world as close as possible to our own reality and then see how a character like Batman would function in that world.

As they are interpretations and wholly independant from one another they can be compared only on a superficial level. They don't have to fit with each other or even into the larger Batman canon. Like Hamlet, Batman is a character whose story could be told over and over again by different filmakers' each adding their own unique spin to him.

BTW, Schumacher's Batman films represent Batman as portrayed by 1960's gay cinema.
True. Hilarious. And make this guy President.

My newfound favorite picture of Keaton as Bats. Everything just clicks.
I wish they had lit him more like this in the movie.

Keaton was my favorite Batman until Bale came around. I think Keaton was even better once he was in Batman Returns. If only he stuck around and Shumacher didn't weird out the films....the sequels could've been great and then we could've had him play Batman in an adaptation of "The Dark Knight Returns."
