The New Director of 'The Hobbit' is.....? 11/22/06, 5:47 pm EST - <A href="mailto:xoanon@theonering.net">Xoanon Word from a reliable source indicates that Sam Raimi has been approached to direct THE HOBBIT. Since Peter Jackson's (Middle-)earth shattering news that he is off the project, it seems the Spider-Man director may step into his place. Raimi was born on October 23rd, 1959 in Royal Oak, Michigan. His first big hit was 'The Evil Dead' but he really gained cult status with 'Evil Dead II'. It is his amazing work on the Spider-Man series that has propelled Raimi to the mainstream. His latest film 'Spider-Man 3' is due out this May. While there is no word on Raimi accepting the invitation, it remains to be seen who, if anyone, will be replacing Peter Jackson! I personally think that sam raimi is a perfect match for the material....may I say even more so than Mr Jackson. Before I get flamed....the reason I think this isnt just because of how great a job raimi did of the spider-man movies, or because he knows his way around fx, or how he can hit cutesy beats, comedy...drama. Ok, the guys an all-rounder. but nevertheless, why I would PREFER raimi over Jackson is because Ijust never agreed with the comments Jackson has made in the past about how he was going to "LOTR-up" The Hobbit and stretch it into 2 movies....it sounded like a horrible idea. The whole joy of the hobbit is that it is a kids book....it IS a fairy-tale,but it's one that's well written and....well y'know! by one of the most notorious authors ever lived. Sam Raimi's "The Hobbit." Has a nice ring to it *sorry..couldnt help the pun.* What do you guys think? |

Hmmm....don't know about all that. I like some of Raimi's work, but it's like people are just going in a circle with these fanboy movies...Nolan, Singer, Raimi, Jackson, oh my! Give someone else a shot.

After Jackson anyone that followed would've been a disappointment, but I was never a fan of Raimi's work. I'm a huge horror fan, but I never saw the attraction with Evil Dead, and Spider Man is one of the worst big budget blockbusters ever made.
On the plus side, he's still better than Singer...as is a kick to the groin with a spiked boot-heel.

Honestly if anyone would be suited for this type of big movie. I would pick Gore Verbinski over Sam Raimi any day. Heck Chris Nolan would be a better choice. Honestly though I think Verbinski would be a best choice with what he has done with P.O.T.C Also its more up the ally of Verbinski then Raimi The Hobbit.

Hmm...As much as I hate Spider-man, I have to admire Raimi's work though. He's a great director and knows how to film action. Now...Who will Ted Raimi play??? Hopefully one of the Dwarves.

Still i'm not totally against the idea that another director should be hired for the hobbit. Granted Pete Jackson did do some wonderful things with LOTR , but i do think people should be more open minded ( as well as actors too). Pete's vision isn't the definitive vision. It's not the Be ALL END ALL vision. There are many more people who have read The Hobbitt and would love to make such a movie. IMO i say New Line and MGM should just co-financse the production and try to get someone who understands the material and is a good director. While it is true that you don't necessarely need a director who has read the books to create a beautiful movie ( see all Harry Potter movies post HP 2 for that matter) , i do feel that in this case you need someone with good knowledge of the tolkien world. What New Line and MGM are doing now is just simply trying to get directors who have been proven that they can handle a big VFX packed movie and still make a enjoyable flick . This is the case with Raimi's name being thrown into the mix as well as Alfonso Cuaron's ( although i'd love to see a cuaron's version of the hobbit). JUst get a small time director with a great vision to make the hobbit. Just like how all harry potter movies ever since HP3 have been made , , just like how Sony gave it's approval to Sam Raimi to create Spider-Man and just like how New Line gave a small time director called Peter Jackson to make LOTR.

Torn over this because I'm a big fan of both directors. Love his LOTR films and I liked King Kong granted it dragged a bit but still good IMO. Hope this mess with the movie gets resolved so these rumors can be put to rest.

Why doesn't New Line and MGM let Jackson do what Lucas did for Episode V and VI? Just let him produce and edit the films, and allow Raimi direct it. It worked out great for Episode V.

What I don't understand is how New Line has more say than MGM when all they have are the distribution rights? Isn't MGM the one actually making the film? Or is it the other way around?

There were somewhere news/scoop/rumour about Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie, Alien 4) taking over The Hobbit.
Found it: http://www.cinemablend.com/new.php?id=3929 I still wan't PJ, but Jeunet can deliver fcking amazing visual images, and of course good movies. I say no to Raimi. I like his work, but he's not suitable for The Hobbit. Let the games begin...; in the next weeks we will hear that Hobbit has been offered to guys from Bryan Singer to Steven Spielberg crossing Ridley Scott and Mel Gibson. And someone makes a joke news about Uwe Boll. Just like those Casino Royale Bond-actor news.

I don't get you guys sometimes. How is Jackson more suitable than Raimi? I mean...if you actually look at both of their careers it's pretty much the same. They both started out in horror-comedy and slowly moved away from that genre. And, if anything, Raimi has proven to be more verstile than Jackson with films like Darkman, The Quick & The Dead, Hudsucker Proxy (which he did with the Coens), A Simple Plan, and now the Spider-Man films.
So, I think if Jackson could do it then so could Raimi. |

Last time I checked the majority of hardcore Spider-Man fans enjoy both 1 and 2 equally, and are just as pumped for the third and final film. |
