Eddie Murphy will return as detective Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop IV, working with Paramount in collaring Lorenzo di Bonaventura as producer, reports Variety.

The new regime at Paramount is keen on reviving the classic action-comedy franchise. Murphy will work closely with the studio and di Bonaventura in reinvigorating and updating the once-lucrative property. The project is out to writers.

Murphy, who will next be in theaters with Dreamgirls, has always been attached to star in the fourth installment.

The first two pics in the franchise, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and his former partner Don Simpson, did enormous box office. Beverly Hills Cop collected $315.7 million worldwide, while the sequel earned $299.6 million worldwide.

The franchise ran into trouble with the release of Beverly Hills Cop III in 1994. The movie grossed only $44 million domestically.

Not sure this needed another sequel but maybe Murphy can find the old form

I liked part 3 as well, but it wasn't better than the first two! If they are doing a part 4 after all these years then they better make sure it's awesome! The should bring back Tony Scott. He did pretty good with part 2. Martin Brest, of course, was the best but he became a joke after Gigli.

I like Part 2 better than Part 1, I haven't seen Part 3 though. I'll look forward to seeing this.

I've never understood the hatred for the third film. Granted, nothing can really top the second film.

For a new film to be fresh, they've really gotta do something different. Have Axel making Beverly Hills his home as the film opens. Bring back Bougamill, if even for like one scene where Axel visits him now that he's retired (what's Ronny Cox like, 90 years old by now?).

I said it in the Smurfs movie thread and I'll say it here...the 80's will never die lol. And with that being said, I'm not sure if you can take the 80's charm of Beverly Hills cop (the synth musical score, the fun 80's soundtrack, etc) and make it work 20 years later. Beverly Hills Cop III lost all that charm (and the characters that made the first two movies work) in the 90's so I don't know what makes these guys think they can re-capture that magic now.

I enjoyed the first two, the third was pretty crapy. I suppose they could pull a decent movie out of thin air,I doubt it though.

I like first movie and the second was good but the part 3 was not so good. When it cames out on Big Screen I go see it I like Eddie Murphy.
