Need a female opinion.

Ladies who frequent these boards may understand my dilemma & possibly offer some helpful advice.
Here's the situation; my wife's birthday is May 3rd, which falls on a Thursday this year. She has to work that day-she already knows this-but she's off the rest of the weekend. As you may know, there's a certain movie that opens on May 4th which, if you know anything about me, I've no desire to miss its opening day. My wife does not want to see the film b/c it represents a species that has been a constant source of fear for her since childhood. At the same time, she basically wants me to spend the entire weekend with her.
1-how do I avoid the couch? I'm willing to compromise here.
2-am I wrong for wanting to do something to please myself on what is essentially her weekend?
3-What would YOU have me do?

well there aren't any spiders in spiderman- except the first one of course. i think she should compromise and give you an afternoon to see it while she does something else- alone time is healthy too

In her eyes, there are spiders in all of them b/c he wears one on his chest & another on his back. But your reply has merit.

Tell her if she doesn't object to you going to the movie you will devote yourself to her utterly for the rest of the weekend! And not mention the movie (once you've seen it) until the weekend is over.

it wasn't an insult. It was a legitimate suggestion. I live with an insane person, and this is how it starts. Irrational phobias that extend to massive degrees. If Spider-Man had a spider head or something I could see being freaked out. But the spider on his uniform is a stylized shape. To have a fear of that is way problematic. I'm a scared of tornados, terrified of them, have nightmares of them, but I can watch Twister.

Why do you have to see it on opening weekend? It's the same movie no matter when you see it.

Question, just as a pragmatist...

many theatres, with big movies like this, have a sneak preview the weekend before or the Tuesday before the actual release...

could you not keep an eye out for tix...see it early...then spend your romantic weekend???

To me it sounds like she would like to go away for a 3 day weekend somewhere but you're too interested in seeing a movie that will be still there when you get back... so what you miss the opening night, it's not going to disappear on you

Though her reasoning for skipping the movie is rather ridiculous, I would respect her opinion and spend Friday with her. She shouldn't (nor should you, I'd think) have a problem with you seeing it the next day.

Has she specifically said anything about spending the weekend together? Like, she wants special alone time or something? Cuz if so, you're kinda screwed. If she hasn't answered about the midnight showing, I doubt she liked the suggestion.

Take off May 4th.

Go see the midnight showing of Spiderman 3, come home, go to bed and then spend the whole day with her.

Or come up with some Three's Company-esque song and dance number where she thinks you're there but you really aren't so you and your friends try to hide the truth in some wacky manner.
