Default Star Wars: Empire at War

No thread for this that I could find...anyone play this?

I bought it today...I was feeling nostalgic and I really wanted to play Warcraft II or some classic Command and Conquer.....I saw this and figured I would give it a try.....it's decent...I only played for a bit.

I've got it and the expansion. The ultimate reward of the Empires campagin is getting to tech level 5 and building the Deathstar and blasting any planet that tickles your fancy into dust! In fact the main thrut of the campagin for the empire is getting enough materials and slaves labour (Geodosians and Wookies) to build the thing.

The general concensus of the game is space combat is awesome and ground combat isn't that great. But yeah without the exapnsion the empire has everything overthe rebels. Like not having to build fighters. And the non capital ships don't suck. On the ground the rebels are a little better. They get Han and Chewie as hero's. And Chewie can take over vechicles.

B-wings (much better than Y-wings which are buckets), Mon Calamari missile frigates (fast starshp killers but not good against star bases), Rouge squadron. And on the ground they get ROTJ Luke Skywalker and Yoda. Yoda is teh roxxorz. One of his special abilities is his Yoda-fu where he jumps around and destroys everything.

Nice.....I think I'll get it for the B-Wings alone, they stad out as the biggest thing missing from the game.

Hey the empire gets cool stuff too.

Like this.

Darth Vaders Super Star Destroyer flagship, the executor. The scale is correct it is 10x bigger than the Star Destroyers. The black SSD in the second is the Eclipse SSD. It is bigger than the Executor and has a scaled down version of the Deathstar's super laser. But the only way you get to use it is half built in the ship yard at the end of the campagin.

You also get Death star II. Which can blow up any ship bigger than a corvette with it's super laser (so can the Eclipse).

I wasn't a fan of the space battles either because of how useless your fighters are in the game if left on their own. One of those annoying light cruisers can trash a huge squadron of fighters which ruined any replayability for me once I finished the campaigns. The developers messed up when they went out of their way to have a rock-paper-scissor type combat system where one ship was good against another class of ship but useless against a third class. I liked the ground combat though because there was actually more strategy involved.

That whole RPS with ships was to arm twist you into using ballanced fleets.

Fighters are mass weapons outside there RPS element. You need an ass load of squadrons for them to be effective. You can take out one of the anti fighter cruisers with fighters but you need 6 squadrons to do it. Bombers are for larger ships and bases. Actually thinking about it for fighrers 6-8 squadrons is their critical mass. With that many you can take out Nebulons/Acclamators and victory's/assault frigates with relative ease. That number can also cover bombers in their runs against capital ships.

Home one uses 4 pop-cap. Like the Mon-cal cruisers. With the rebels you can either have capital ships or lots of fighters.
