Default Snyder Throws a Sucker Punch

March 4, 2007

300 director Zack Snyder has set up the first project at his new company, Cruel and Unusual Films - an action fantasy titled Sucker Punch.

Snyder, who is eyeing the project as a directing vehicle, will produce with partner and wife Deborah Snyder. Snyder will co-write the script with Steve Shibuya, adapting it from his own original short story.

Set in the 1950's, "Punch" follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

"A while ago I had written a script for myself and there was a sequence in it that made me think, 'How can I make a film that can have action sequences in it that aren't limited by the physical realities that normal people are limited by, but still have the story make sense so it's not, and I don't mean to be mean, like a bull***** thing like "Ultraviolet" or something like that?' " Snyder said. "And also, I was really inspired by the worlds of movies like 'Moulin Rouge,' which is modern but at the same time timeless."

Snyder described the world as "an 'Alice in Wonderland' with machine guns," blending such elements as dragons, B-52 bombers and brothels. Music will play a key role.

"In the end, it's about this girl's survival and what she needs to do to be able to cope," Deborah Snyder said.

Snyder is in pre-production on Watchmen, the adaptation of the Alan Moore-Dave Gibbons graphic novel. Watchmen is eyeing a late summer start.

If 300 is really great movie, I will be happy having Snyder as the director of Watchmen

Unlike 99% of directors out there Snyder actually respects comic books as an artistic medium. The guy also has vivid imagination.

Finally a fanboy makes it in Hollywood!

Go Zach! Show those Hollywood assclowns what a comic book movie is supposed to look like!

Zack Snyder is shaping up to be an amazing visual director. Sucker Punch sounds like a cool idea. The more I read about him the more excited I get about his vision of Watchmen.

The Cast of Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer’s Body, Mama Mia), Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Abbie Cornish (Stop-Loss), Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler, Across The Universe), and Emma Stone (Superbad) are in talks to join the all-female cast of Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch.

Snyder has called the film “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”, an R-Rated $100 million budgeted 1950’s-period action movie which tells the story of a girl named Baby Doll (Seyfried) who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While imprisoned, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain. In this fantasy world, where she needs to steal five objects to help her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. Hudgens

(”Blondie”), Cornish (”Sweet Pea”), Wood (”Rocket”), and Stone would play Seyfried’s fellow inmates who also travel into the alternate reality.
The film is gearing up to begin principal photography in Fall 2009, with an October 8th 2010 release date already announced by Warner Bros.

I guess Snyder is moving toward the female audience... 300 style, replacing the males with females... . I thought this was supposed to be a psychological film... hope it doesn't become another brainless bloodbath.

Amanda Seyfried's attempt to tackle some edgy theatrical material has been thwarted by scheduling issues. EW has learned that the actress, best known for her singing-and-dancing role in Mamma Mia, won't be starring in Zack Snyder's 1960s-set, R-rated action fantasy Sucker Punch for Warner Bros. Seyfried was offered the lead role of Baby Doll, a young woman who has been committed to an insane asylum and fantasizes about escaping with the help of her fellow inmates. But with shooting scheduled for the fall, HBO won't release her from her Big Love commitment, which will be in the middle of filming its fourth season. No word yet on who Snyder will find as her replacement.

I though WB was done with R rated tentpole films?

Hawt cast thought. I'm defininitely there, to me Snyder might be the second coming of Paul Verhoeven.

This almost sounds Tarantino-esque, so I'm interested.

Maybe Kat Dennings can replace Amanda Seyfried.

This won't be a tentpole. It's a spring or fall 2010 release.

It costs $100 million. The expectations are equivalent.

If Kat Dennings is in it, I can guarantee a tentpole.

Touche

I'm half expecting that budget to drop after Watchey's performance. Maybe get rid of a character and allow that actress to be the lead.
