Wow. GG's is such political bs. Buscemi with a nod but not Michael Shannon? And all Margaret does is cringe her face and speak in an irish accent. Guess actual acting doesn't really matter to them.

I thought Kelly MacDonald was great?

Anyway, I realize I haven't commented on this since it ended.

Can I just say this was an amazing show? This was the best show on TV I saw all year. The first 3-4 episodes (despite Scorsese's style) left me undecided as to whether the show was going to have long-term appeal.

However, the show was a slow burn and turned into this amazingly gripping drama. The strength is how different Nucky is from the typical mafia characters (be they like Michael Corleone, Tony Soprano or Henry Hill). On first glance, Nucky is passive. But he is more a politician with a conscience than a mobster.

And his true interest is maintaining political power so he can use that to pressure his crime connections to make money. And watching him grab-handle his way through the show is great. The episode where he burned down his father's home was amazing.

The yin to Nucky's strategic subtly is Jimmy's descent into personal hell. He has already alienated his family beyond redemption. And seeing him lose what's left of his soul when taht prostitute died was heartbreaking. But his self-reinvention as a gangster mastermind has been chillingly entertaining. Sure, we cheer when he gets his revenge his Chicago or threatens Lucky Luciano in his mother's bed. But the viscousness with how he can say, slit someone's throat or continue to distance himself from his wife or Nucky is tragically fascinating.

Michael Shannon's subplot is also superb, if creepy. I understand 1920 racism and double standards, but I doubt he could murder a fellow fed in front of a congregation of witnesses and get off because they're black (speaking of which I was happy to see Chalky get to go to the Republican Victory party).

I have to say my favorite performance could be the guy who plays Arnold Rothstein he is so steely, and reservedly menacing and brilliant. He is the smartest man in the room and steals all his scenes with icy menace.

Just such a great show all around. I love how they work in the era and just not the costumes and prohibition. But Nucky going to Chicago for the 1920 RNC Convention and working with Harding, the most corrupt presidency in US History. Or going to see Harding. Which leads to one of Nucky's great show stealing lines, "You should have seen Harding with us. He has a decent act, but no one would give a ****, if it wasn't for who his brother was." Speaking of which it looks like Godfather Part II in betrayal next season. I don't think Jimmy will work against Nucky for long, but his brother is gone.

Ah, what a great show.

Agreed.. although I've considered Jimmy to be the co lead with Nucky. But regardless. I think those 3 deserved noms over the two who actually got them.

Great Show!!

I just don't like how they sometimes, chump Luciano and Lansky.

Luciano and Lansky are the Founding Fathers of modern Organized Crime in America.

Hope they do the famous Atlantic City Conference of 1928 in future episodes.

That's the most significant meeting of the American Mob in history hosted by Nucky himself which included legendary mobsters Luciano, Lansky, Capone, and Frank Costello just to name a few.

Its a TV show, and they're just playing with audience expectations - same reason Capone is shown as a joke sometimes.

It makes sense. Capone didn't rise to power until the mid-twenties after an assassination attempt caused John Torrio to move back to Italy and retire. He left his organization to Capone. Meanwhile, Lucciano and Lansky didn't really rise to power until the late twenties when Arnold Rothstein was murdered. The first season was set in 1920 so none of those men would be power players yet.

I personally love the portrayals of Capaone and Lucciano. Usually, when you see Lucciano in a movie, he is a suave, smooth talking, Robin Hood-esque ladies man with a heart of gold. Meanwhile, Capone is always portrayed as a monster. In this however, Lucciano is an ******* with erectile dysfunction and Capone is kind of a sympathetic character. Its a really interesting portrayal.

Yes. He is based on Nucky JOHNSON.

It was changed to THOMPSON so the writers will have more freedom to write more stories NOT restricted to the real life of the real Nucky Johnson.

Ok, so Boardwalk kick some serious ass at the awards.

Won 2 Golden Globes (Actor in Drama and Drama Series)

Won DGA Award

Won WGA Award

Won 2 SAG Awards (Actor in Drama and Ensemble in Drama)

All that it's left is to win the Emmys

Record winnings for the show at the Golden Europe's

Quote:
Boardwalk Empire and Glee clean up the Golden Europe Television Awards!

Boardwalk Empire and Glee took home the top prizes at the 13-th annual Golden Europe TV Awards. Terrance Winter’s mob drama Boardwalk Empire took the record 10 awards out of 17 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor in Drama for Steve Buscemi, Lead Actress in Drama for Kelly McDonald, and Supporting Actor in Drama for Michael Shannon.

In the Comedy genre, the teen musical Glee also took a record of 9 awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actress in Comedy for Lea Michelle and Supporting Actress in Comedy for Jane Lynch.

What makes you think that it has no fans? That people aren't talking about it in-between seasons?

Dexter, Walking Dead, Glee, House threads have a lot of attention, but the last three posts in that thread are mine.

I just found the show simply amazing. A cinema quality. If it was a motion picture it was goinf to be a frontrunner for the Best Picture.

PS:

The Awards:

2 Golden Globes (3 nominations)

DGA Award (2 nominations)

WGA Award (2 nominations)

ACS Award (4 nominations)

2 SAG Awards (2 nominations)

10 Golden Europe Awards (17 nominations)

EDDIE Award

If the Emmy's don't honor the show, they will seriously suck.

This thread has more replies than the Dexter thread and the TWD thread. And that's kind of surprising because Dexter is a better show and has been out much longer.

Those are both new threads.

I loved this show, but there's not much to talk about. There's going to be a long wait between seasons, and..? The finale was a little lackluster.. the show built up and up and then kind of just puttered out in the final episode(look at the first seasons of, say, Rome & Deadwood for shows that built up and built up to an explosive finale) but other than that it was top notch. Great characters, performances, and storylines. I watched it every week and will watch it again at least once all the way through. Is it my favorite show? No, but it's up there. I'd say it's probably the best show on HBO right now that isn't a comedy.. but then again, HBO doesn't exactly have a lot of shows at the moment. And it will likely(hopefully) be dethroned soon.

You talk about Game of Thrones? The show looks quite good but it anothe fentasy. I doubt it will be as proffecional as Boardwalk. But we will see.

Another fantasy? I wasn't aware we had so many. In fact I believe this is the first one to ever grace a pay channel or network known for making shows, that, you know, don't suck. Sure, I guess they had John From Cincinatti but that was one season and about Jesus being a surfer.

And for the record, I'm not even a big fantasy guy, but those books are amazing.
