A classic!

Everything is great (especially Reeve and Donner) in this movie, but Luthor and some campy stuff have hurt this (but not too much).

In my opinion, Spider-Man 2 and Batman Begins have topped this (and hopefully The Dark Knight too!)

Yep, Superman the Movie has no equal. No movie has come close. Batman Begins was getting there but then faded away.

just watched superman the movie on blue ray and it was brill, much better than superman returns and what really seems to amaze me is that superman the movie still sells well, infact it was sold out on blueray anyways with HMV they had a huge demand for the film. So to all you donner haters on here and saying the story is crap in all, sales speak for themselves and in fact if they remade the film today it would out sell the crap bryan singer produced, i say bring donner back because his version sells.

End of

LOL, I admire your enthusiasm but I'm sure you know that just because something sells does not mean it is a quality product.

It is a very good movie, but No, it's Not the best for me anymore. My tastes have changed now as an adult, and while I love the movie, especialy Christopher Reeve's great performance as Superman and the wonderful score, the campy and corny scenes of Lex and company ruin part of the film for me now. But I still enjoy it a lot.

my favorite superhero movies are:
SR (Fantastic!!)
STM (magical)
X2 (exciting)
S2 (General Zod!)
XMEN (very good)
BB (good)

I agree that S:TM is the greatest comic book movie ever. Although, my favourite is The Crow.

i only agree if you connect it to superman 2. personally, i thought superman 2 was better (lester cut or the donner cut), so i will agree only if you count 1 and 2 as one movie.

I agree with the OP. S:TM is still the best, followed by Spidey 2 and the Incredibles tied for 2nd and then BB & X2 tie for third place. And I don't even like Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, or the X-men that much. I'm a Hulk & Iron Man fan(hopefully this'll be my year). But even though I'm not a fan of them, I still recognize great film-making when I see it.

And I liked Hackman's Lex Luthor. I'd just like whatever Lex we get in future movies to be a post-crisis evil business mogul. I'd also prefer Supes to be post-crisis from now on as well. Pre-crisis has been paid enough homage.

This movie is so overrated. I do agree it was an important movie, especially to this genre, but S TMP would not even be in my top 10 comic book movies.

Kinda off topic Kevin, but in response to your signature, the difference between Spider-Man & Superman is that Spider-Man makes more money.

Certainly the Spidey movies have been more successful at the box office than the Superman movies, or Batman, X-Men or any superhero movies, but as Supes has a good twenty plus years on Spidey, I'll wager he's made more money overall (movies, TV, comics, merchandise, etc). Or maybe it's Batman. I'd love to know.

And The Phantom Menace, Sleeping Beauty, Shrek 2, Independence Day, Airport...a lot of films have made more cash than the Superman ones. Doesn't mean anything.

Without a doubt. Rocketeer is one of the BEST adaptations, it's almost identical and what it adds new works very well within the framework of the story.

Daredevil, esp the Director's cut is excellent- no cheese to be found here at all.

As a whole the Spider-Man franchise is better than the Superman Franchise, without a doubt. THe films and adaptations are much better and accurate accurate to the comics. More diverse in their depiction of characters.

Accuracy to source material isn't always the recipe for a good movie. Let's face it, some comics just suck. But there might be a spark of interesting material there that could be made into a good movie, provided they ditch everything else that's lame. Thus it would not be very faithful to source material but still a good movie.

The converse is true as well. Some are very faithful and that's why they suck. FF Spidey 3, DD, etc.

I'd like to chime in on the characters themselves.

Superman- A character who by learning the morals and values of a classic midwestern conservative upbrining, puts his powers and abilities beyond those of mortal men to use for the good of the world because he KNOWS it's the right thing to do based on his upbrining. When he appears as SUperman, his morals and ethics are fully developed and in place. He is comfortable with his dual life b/c it has been his choice to live this way and he knows it is morally right.

Spider-Man- A character who by experiencing the emotional ups and downs of being a teen-ager, loses himself in his newfound power and learns the difficult lesson of 'with great power comes responsibility.' Consequently, after learning the lesson, he is in some way trying to atone for Uncle Ben's death the rest of his life.
