Most likely they are people who can not afford a PS3 so are making themselves feel better by making fun of something they won't be able to have. That is my general theory. It seems that those with both a microsoft and sony product are more accepting and willing to admit great titles for both systems, where as if someone just has one or the other, its more along the lines of just defending what they have, and bashing the other guys.

Though on the face of it it's similar to God of War, it's by now means a rip off. God of War essentially created a sub-genre, and Heavenly Sword is another game in the sub-genre now. Just like there are thousands of FPS games, or fighters.

Aside from that, Heavenly Sword has the stance system. One particular fast stance in which you can't block. A standard stance, and then a slow but powerful stance. You need certain stances to block certain enemies, and certain stances to defeat certain enemies. The combat system is very different to God of War, despite appearing fairly similar on the face of things.

Add in the additional character who merely fights from afar with arrows and cannot engage in melee combat, and the different elements, such as the bazooka shown, and Heavenly Sword has enough to stand out, and prevent it from merely being a 'God of War rip off'.

I love God of War, and I love the look of Heavenly Sword. Quite why it needs to be insulted for being similar I don't know. I'd quite happily own both games.

So I broke and watched the big featurette thing, but no more, because I think they showed too much as it is!

You liked what you saw? I thought it looked pretty amazing. The combat system will take some getting used to after God of War, but jopefully it'll grow on me.

I did like what I saw of the game I think the Featurette was terrible though. From the poor editing, the constant useless reveals of plot points, to how they broke up sequences and the poor choice of a lot of the footage used. It was a trainwreck and the people behind it should be fired for doing such a shoddy job. But the game itself looks great.

Not to mention the narrator.

That feature did the game a disservice, but E3 makes it all better.

this is one of those games that looks like it could easily be repetitive...but wow... every move looks different and new...and smooth.

Z, your silly link shows a completely different game.

Actual Heavenly Sword link. The sister doing a bit of shooting. The sheer scale of the level is epic, and least in view.

Gah why does everyone playing suck? I should clarify, the game looks like it will be good fun when I'm playing it.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/21715.html

Kai is such an innocent but creepy little character, she was described as a Savant, correct? That would explain some things. I love how expressive and alive she is in this scene (audio is out of sync though)

Preview over at IGN. Positive again, easing fears the game could get too repetitive.

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/804/804704p1.html

-----------------

US, July 13, 2007 - Thank the maker, there's more to Heavenly Sword than just arena battles! As most of you probably remember, our biggest concern for the game was that it was made up of segmented fighting sequences and nothing else. Luckily Ninja Theory put that fear to rest at E3, when it unveiled a number of new details and sections that nobody had seen before.

The first new sequence on display was a cool little "defend the castle" mission that puts Nariko in control of giant fire cannons. Her mandate is simple: destroy the approaching enemy force before they pound her stronghold's walls down. The enemies here are made up of three main types -- kamikaze dumb-asses inserted into flaming rolling barrels, massive tank-like structures with multiple layers of armor, and a horde of foot soldiers whose sole purpose seems to be getting blown up.

Another fun little scenario was a small side-scrolling challenge that played out on the surface of a bridge connecting two castles. Nariko's only goal here was to knock off as many fools as possible. Sure it was a little simplistic, but the backgrounds looked great and at least it proved that Ninja Theory was trying to mix things up a bit. Oh, and as an added bonus, we also learned that the difficulty level has been increased quite a bit (to best exploit your three different fighting styles).

Next up was a boss battle with King Bohan's enormous fatty son. Playing through this segment shows off what some of the more epic confrontations are like. Beating the big bastard takes a bit of "the old God of War contextual reflexes;" Covered by an immense turtle shell and armed with two chopping swords, Bohan's brood has to be systematically defeated through the use of clever timing and the desire to climb a sweaty pile of blubber.

The biggest surprise, of course, was the introduction of a brand new character, Kai. Nariko's younger adopted sister, Kai is completely devoid of melee combat skills. Instead, she employs a crossbow that has a Resident Evil 4 viewpoint in which the arrows are controlled with the Sixaxis tilt (much like Nariko's thrown objects). Ninja Theory describes the new heroine as a "crossbow savant," and in addition to her mad missile skills, she can also run and jump over any surface with crazy monkey-like agility.

Some other tidbits worth mentioning -- switching to "range style" allows Nariko to deflect arrow attacks; players can go back to already-unlocked stages if they want to play them again; and performing more stylish moves unlocks secret goodies like additional moves, behind-the-scenes videos, and a two-part anime based on Nariko's adventures. Oh, and the game's facial animations are fantastic. Andy Serkus deserves a medal.

In closing, we left Heavenly Sword with more optimism than we had before. It doesn't look anywhere near as repetitive as we thought it might be and it has some very nice texture work and cool lighting. We do have to give the Sixaxis tilt support a bit (it's a little too touchy it seems), but with a PSN demo coming soon, we have plenty of time to get used to it.

YAY! YAY! YAY! Sorry, got excited. This game is gonna be so sweet. I can not wait!

From what I've seen, this could be a real 'game of the year' contender.

Seeing as there's no platforming like there is in God of War keeping the game feelling new and exciting are very important. Granted the the story seems totally spot on so that will help no matter what the level progression ends up being.

It seems a little hard to aim with Kai without going into the chase mode, I hope they find a way to make it easier to aim her crossbow.

EDIT: I can't get over how amazing Kai looks and emotes jebus. It's like she's really alive.

I work strange hours, though as a perk I get to live around Chinatown which is pretty cool. It's 11:45 at night for me, and I work 12:00 to 9:30 on the weekend. Don't get home until 11 (Bah!).
