Some great casting.

John Goodman joins cast of 'Damages'
By Alberto E. Rodriguez

John Goodman is joining the cast of Glenn Close's legal thriller Damages in the season's key season-long guest role. He'll play the CEO of a shadowy military contractor who becomes a defendant in a wrongful death suit over an incident in a war zone, producer Todd Kessler tells USA TODAY's Gary Levin.

* More TV news

"John Goodman's phenomenal body of work speaks for itself. And we've been huge fans of his for years," says Kessler. "It's a real thrill to be adding an actor of John's extensive range and talent to the cast of Damages. We can't wait to pit him against Glenn Close and Rose Byrne in our fourth season."

The former FX series' fourth season will air this summer exclusively on DirecTV. Goodman is best known for his role on ABC comedy Roseanne and recently co-starred in HBO's Treme. Previous Damages guest stars included Ted Danson, William Hurt, Martin Short and Lily Tomlin.

I just watched finished the first season. It's a very entertaining show and both Glenn Close & Rose Byrne gives a outstanding performance.

I'll try to hurry up and watch finish Season 2 & 3.

Ask Mo:

CandyLynnBryant asks: Has 'Damages' begun production? Any word on cast additions?
'Damages' begins production on its 10-episode fourth season Feb. 10 in New York. Season 4 will arrive in July, a representative for DirecTV confirmed.

Glenn Close will return as lawyer Patty Hewes and Rose Byrne will be back as Ellen Parsons, and in the new season of the show [spoilers ahoy in the rest of this sentence], John Goodman will play "a shadowy military contractor who becomes a defendant in a wrongful death suit over an incident in a war zone" and Dylan Baker will play a cagey man who has ties to the Middle East and is "intimately involved in the season-long conspiracy," according to DirecTV.

Fans who've missed previous seasons of the show, which used to air on FX, still have time to catch up with the devious Hewes: Repeats of previous seasons are airing each Wednesday on DirecTV's 101 Network. Season 1 began airing Jan. 5, season 2 begins April 6 and season 3 begins May 25.

I just want to repeat this, so there's no confusion: FX isn't airing 'Damages' any more. You can only catch the show on DirecTV or, presumably, on DVD at some point in the future.

Judd Hirsch joins 'Damages'

Quote:
The upcoming fourth season of Damages has added veteran actor Judd Hirsch in a key role. Hirsch (Numbers, Taxi) will play a former mentor of Patty’s (Glenn Close); a man who took her under his wing during her first job out of law school. But his situation has changed greatly over time and he now spends his time “at the bottom of a bottle.”

I just got into this show because I was looking for a new summer "substance" show amidst all the fluff, to fill the void in my viewing schedule left by Mad Men...and I ended up watching all 3 seasons over the course of a month. It's brilliant, and seriously addictive.

Can't wait for the new season. I wonder if the move to Direct TV will change anything content-wise. No commercials, no cable-network censorship...should be interesting.

Breaking Bad is a perfect substitute for Mad Men as well.

I know, I think the subject matter just makes it hard for me to get motivated to watch it, if that makes any sense. But I'm sure I'll get into it eventually...I've heard nothing but great things about it.

Season 5 Teaser

Beware, it's a pretty big spoiler. Wow, I can't believe what I just saw. Now the wait for the new season has become even more unbearable.

Holy s*** at that teaser! At first it does seem super-spoilery (even if they were gonna pull the "show the big death in the flash-fowards of the first episode" technique)....but we've gotta remember, a lot of the teasers for this show have been strictly "symbolic," so maybe that's the case here.

I'm not convinced that character's actually gonna bite it just yet. Though I certainly wouldn't put it past 'em.

Yes, the promos for season 2 and 3 were metaphorical. As much as it pains me to say/write it, if it serves the story, I don't mind them killing off the character. That is if it's what it seems.

I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to it either, tbh. I mean, it would be more surprising and less believable if everyone lived happily ever after on this show, lol.

Finally got around to finishing season four after only watching 2 episodes. Wow, that was such a waste. Even with less episodes the writers had to stretch things out. How many times should've Sanchez been killed? That was Damages Lite. Let's hope they go all out for the final season.

Well the trailers for S5 are making a certain someone's death look a little less symbolic and a little more literal. Should be interesting.

The fourth season lacked the "edginess" it had when it was on FX and the move to DirectTV was noticeable in the quality, you just can feel it from the change of pace and more simplified storyline. Anyway I think the characters has peaked in maturity and development after the third season so in season 4 it feels very spotty at times.

But I like how the season was resolved, Damages' finales can be a bit messy with characters doing whatever to make the pieces to the flash-forwards fit together, regardless of whether it's in consistent to the characters or not so the simplicity to it for me was for the better.

The fifth season is off to a good start. Byrne & Close is great as usual. I like the scene with Patty and Bill when she tells him that Ellen knows "things", and he understands what she means. I was kind of surprised to see that Elfman's character was killed off so soon. Can't shake the feeling that Patty was involved on it. Anyway, I'm just glad that Damages is back and hopefully the final season goes out with a bang.

Yeah, this season's already better than last season, imo. I was surprised about Elfman's character too. Maybe she'll feature more prominently in flashbacks?

So that was it, the series finale, I felt quite satisfied. The flash forward with Ellen lying on the alley I felt at first that it was a cop-out but I accepted it the more I think about it since she ended up in a parallel situation like Patty when she was younger, also when Ellen gave out the whistle-blower so McClaren's not arrested and Patty pointed out that she took the case to see how far Ellen's willing to go and then seeing her actions really shows she's capable to be just like Patty, but luckily she decides this is not a path for her.

The resolution to both the McClaren and the custody case feels rushed, like they wanted it out of the way so they could go back to Patty/Ellen. The former's more acceptable (I started to care less the further it went on honestly) but the whole situation of Scully killing Michael was just stupid, it works as a cruel twist of fate but I don't know, it feels somewhat at the last minute decision from KZK but you could chalk it up that people doing strange things when they're desperate.

The one scene when Patty met with her dad and lash out her hatred for him, perfection, just marvelous acting from Glenn, I'd be fine if they left out the epilogue, besides the shot of Patty (her clothing style in that scene reminds me of Cruella de Vil btw) alone in her limousine I think it's better they ended with both of them on the dock.

I'll miss the show, even though the quality of the first season has never been matched but KZK wrapped up Patty and Ellen's struggle pretty well and even if all the seasons (besides 1) has their ups and downs I hope it'll find a larger audience in the future.

Hope you'll like it, the McClaren trial may had more focus than it deserved but it's more engaging for me since Patty and Ellen's conflict is more central to the story, I could've easily seen the series ended after season 3 but S5 is not a bad closure to the series. Here's hoping Glenn gets nominated for an Emmy next year.
