When I saw Elf for the first time with a mate he made a comment about him not being main actor material. I think he does suit the supporting role better than main actor status. Yet with films such as Stranger Than Fiction, Ferrell still has the potential to deliver a decent film. Didn't like Talladega Nights too much though Blades of Glory wasn't too bad. I thought Bewitched was ruined by his overacting per se. Jim Carrey would have made a better Darren IMHO.
As for Adam Sandler I laugh at all the blind haters. He actually has proven that he really has the acting chops to do something other than comedy. Punch Drunk Love and Reign Over Me (by far one of the best films of the year thus far) are such examples though there is still a little comedy in them. Yet some of his other comedies like Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer and Mr Deeds aren't silly like Little Nicky or The Waterboy. I love his movies. I can watch them over and over and never get sick of them. I just hate how box offices figures not to mention word of mouth can ruin an actors career when they want to do something ambitious. I applaud Jim Carrey for trying other things. I thought The Majestic was brilliant. I haven't seen the number 23 yet. Eternal Sunshine was fantastic though it is a comedy anyway. Most of the time people don't seem want to give comedy actors a chance to branch out. Robin Williams has proven it. Yet it's my opinion there I've said it. And Will Farrell should try something different. And not rely on his buddies Vince Vaughn, Luke and Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller all the time for their cameos either. They all seem to make the same movie. I digress..... |

He's a genius.
If you don't agree, you're an idiot. This is not a matter of opinion. It's empirically proven fact. I'm sorry. |

will farrel is hilarious but he has had some stinkers. id rather he do something other than another sports parody but that other project could be bewitched 2 or something.
i thought he did a good job in stranger than fiction. |

No the difference here is that Will Farrel's act was never really funny, only funny in a pitty laugh, when you watch children try to be funny, way.
*Oh look at me, I'm a childish adult. I'm so Homer-simpson-conan-obrian-Peter-Griffin-Ralph-Kramden-Fred-Flinstone-George-Bush-Shaggy-Curly-ISH, I'm so original*

So no one saw Stranger than Fiction, Elf or The Producers I take it?
Because he was brilliant in both of those. And yesh e has found his nitch for the b.o. with Anchorman, but hey....at least he reinvents it and it is still funny (albeit not as funny with each installment). You can't say the same about hacks like Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler and other comedians who do the same shtick over and over without it ever being funny. |

P.S. If we are just going after comedians for sticking with a popular character....you want to know a real moron then? Charlie Chaplan....Oh and let's not forget the Marx Brothers...Abbot and Costello as well....Lucelle Ball, what a hack...Steve Martin is such a...
Most of the greats have one type of comedy or two and sell those. There are few Bill Murrays out there. But when people rag ones who are actually funny and experiment with their brand of comedy and try new things like Ferrell, Steve Carell, even Stiller to an extent....just why? |

Will Ferrell does lots of different types of movies......is it his fault that he only has big success with his sports movies? It's not his fault...
Personally....I think he's the funniest actor right now. I'd watch any movie with him. Talledega Nights was great. It's not everyones type of humor...it has the trademark randomness stuff I find hilarious. He's way better than Sandler and Carrey IMO |

I disagree. I've had the misfortune of sitting through Anchorman, Talladega Nights and one of his Best of SNL DVDs and not once did I find a single moment in any of them funny. Not one.
I really can't understand what people see in him. I just can't.

Cowbell is brilliant.
![]() My point was Chaplin, Ball, Marx brothers, etc. all had a certain character and all reused them for their shtick. But no one bashes them. And if we are bringing in Ferrell's SNL days, then you just lost the argument. His Bush, Celebrity Jeopardy, Cowbell, Spartan Cheerleaders, Night at the Roxbury (sketch, not the movie), impersonations, etc. The list is endless. |

Let's leave chaplin out of this. his name has absolutely no place in a Will Farrel thread. That's like discussing pokemon and bringing up final fantasy as an apt comparison for rpg games that re-use the same formula. At least try zelda, but even that's pushing it.crap, my gamer-nerd is showing. I get what you're saying, but the difference is that those guys are funny and made great work, while farrel's squarely been consistently mediocre aside from cowbell. I submit that anyone arguing for Will Farrel's excellence as an actor has lost at life, plain and simple. I'm serious. edit: And I don't even hate him, but he's truly only slightly above the super annoying hack Jimmy Falon.

What about Stranger Than Fiction? What about Elf? What about Melinda and Melinda? He has proven he is a better actor than many think and can go beyond the dumb frat guy persona. He has to put bread on the table. He does the comedy that sells, then a passion piece. At least he seems to be alternating that way. |
