Which of these filmmakers should have had a Best Director Oscar nomination by now?

Tim Burton 7195 (28.8%)

Cameron Crowe 1230 (4.9%)
Guillermo del Toro 1137 (4.5%)
Darren Aronofsky 968 (3.9%)

Robert Rodriguez 751 (3.0%)
Richard Linklater 607 (2.4%)
Danny Boyle 557 (2.2%)
I have no opinion on this topic. 469 (1.9%)

Why is Uwe Boll not on that list?

Seriously, I agree with the polls. Burton deserves an Oscar. As for Nolan, I assume he'll get one eventually, but he needs a bit more experience. I'd imagine Cuaron and Del Toro will get Oscars in the future as well. But I don't think Chris Columbus or the Wachowskis belong on that list.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Bryan Singer already had a directing nomination for "The Usual Suspects"?

Nolan should have been nominated for both Memento and The Prestige, top movies in my list. But I hope someday he will win his award.

What about Tim Burton, though Ed Wood was one of the best 1994 films, it still didn't get the award (Forest Gump did it). I doubt he'll ever get awar, maybe nomination, but not award. Usually his movies are surrealistic fantasy stories, what isn't the normal format for academy.

I can see Bryan Singer winning Oscar for his Valkyrie, but it's just my thoughts.

Fincher also has a chance to get it, but if only his new drama project with Pitt won't suck. I have seen all of his movies and I realized that he was making one great masterpiece after another disappointment (examples: Alien 3 then Se7en, The Game then Fight Club, Panic Room then Zodiac). His last movie proved that Fincher doesn't need vfx or CGI to tell story, what means that next time acdemy won't be so skeptiсal about him.

I doubt Aronofsky will ever be nominated, as he isn't the type of director, who would get positive descission from academy. He's an indie filmmaker, who usually makes movies with base on more visual style and effective view at the world than storytelling (example, The Fountain).

I think Cuaron's Children of Men was amazing movie about possible version of what can happen with the world, if people stop giving beart to their children. I was very disappointed, when I learnt that e didn't get nomination.

It won two awards (Best Screenplay and Best Actor of Supporting Role), but it has never gotten the nomination for Best Director or Best Motion Picture. Check out it's imdb list of awards

The reason Burton was #1 is because he's been in the industry longer than most directors on the list. As for nominations...he has been robbed TWICE! In 1990, Edward Scissorhands, should have been nominated instead of horrible Godfather III. And in 1994, Ed Wood, should have been nominated instead of the average Quiz Show.

They nominated Godfather III before Edward Scissorhands? That's a damn shame.

Scissorhands only got ONE nomination and it was for make-up! Thats right! Not even Elfman's music was nominated.

CHrist what a god-awful list:

Tim Burton 7195 (28.8%) - All visuals and no substance, outside of a Big Fish so no...

Christopher Nolan 2883 (11.5%) - He has had 4 films... Big whoop... Give it some time... Memento was all style sans substance(don't get me wrong I dug it but not oscar material), the Prestige is over-rated around here.

David Fincher 2799 (11.2%) -Decent choice

I like this list, but I cannot pick just one director. 2496 (10.0%)

Alfonso Cuaron 1653 (6.6%) - Outside of Children of Men what has he done?e

Cameron Crowe 1230 (4.9%) - He's more story than film-making

Guillermo del Toro 1137 (4.5%) - Again 3 films... Give it time

Darren Aronofsky 968 (3.9%) - He's made 3 self-indulgent films... DOn't get me wrong I like them, but again not oscar material

Robert Rodriguez 751 (3.0%) - His movies look like a film-student... Who in there right mind whould choose him?

Richard Linklater 607 (2.4%) - More self-indulgent film-making

Danny Boyle 557 (2.2%) - Good choice... Trainspotting and 28 DAys later were both excellent

Bryan Singer 453 (1.8%) - What the hell has Bryan Singer done that'd deserve an oscar? Usual Suspects? Give me a break...

Gore Verbinski 345 (1.4%) - He hasn't hit the mark yet, I'd say he's a mark above Bret Ratner, delivering entertaining yet mediocre films

Chris Columbus 344 (1.4%) - The scripts he's given are good, however his direction is pedestrian

The Wachowski Brothers 279 (1.1%) - All Style
---

Terrible List... Where's Croenenberg and Gilliam

Edward Sissorhands isn't Oscar material. It was ok,but just that...only ok. Nolan should have been nominated for Memento, but he's a young guy, he'll have his chance again at a later time.Tim Burton movies have a great look to them, but hardly stand up to Oscar standards.

He's right. I loved ESH, but it wasn't that kind of movie, which would get Oscar.

There was no animation category back then. If there would have been, Nightmare Before Christmas, would have DEFINITLY won the Oscar. The person that got robbed was Danny Elfman. Can you believe that he wasn't nominated?!

Del Torro is by far the best director on that list, but his only great movies are in Spanish, and as far as I know, Clint Eastwood is the only person to be nominated for best director for a foreign language film, which is a shame.

He already had one. It was called Big Fish! Planet of the Apes is the only bad movie the man has ever made.

big fish was like 2005 and for the most part that movie went under the radar. He needs an aweosme come back movie. beetlejuice 2? or something as weird and quirky as the nightmare before christmas.

lol. It was 2003! And it got a Golden Globe nominated for Best Comedy or Musical. 2005 was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was the 7th highest grossing movie of the year, and Corpse Bride which was nominated for a Best Animated Movie Oscar.
