Th Smile Ramin Djawadi to score IRON MAN!

Djawadi to Compose the Iron Man Score

Iron Man director Jon Favreau has confirmed that composer Ramin Djawadi will score the comic book adaptation for Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures. Here is how his agency describes the artist:

Composer Ramin Djawadi started out his musical career as a guitar player in numerous bands in Germany. In 1995 he decided to move to the US to earn a bachelor's degree in film scoring and guitar performance at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. While still in college he became a member of the band "My Favorite Relative," who were nominated for seven Boston Music Awards in 1999. In 2000, Ramin moved to California to join Media Ventures, home of Academy Award Winner Hans Zimmer, which led to collaborations as a composer and arranger for Klaus Badelt including featuring films "The Time Machine," "K-19: The Widowmaker," "Basic" and "The Recruit." Recently, he contributed music to Badelt's score to Jerry Bruckheimer's summer blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean." He co-composed and produced the score for "Thunderbirds" together with Hans Zimmer. Other collaborations with Zimmer include "Something's Gotta Give" and "Batman Begins". Recent scores are "Blade: Trinity," the hit TV series "The Grid" and the Disney movie "Buffalo Dreams." After completing the score for "Ask the Dust," he is currently working on the hit TV series "Prison Break."
Love this guys work. His score from Blade 3, despite the suck fest the movie itself was, was great. Also his work on 'Prison Break' and 'Blade the series' was awesome too.

Personally, I'm not too fond of this news. Djawadi has a heavily electronics background, from working with Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt, and his score for BLADE: TRINITY was something of a monstrosity. I was hopeful that John Debney, as much rumored, would get the gig (he's done work for the SPIDER-MAN films and composed the majestic score for THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST) or someone with more of an orchestral background, but alas, Favreau chooses Djawadi.

Who knows, maybe Favreau will throw out Djawadi's score at the last minute and get Debney to replace him.

Djawadi is an iffy choice to me. I really liked "Daywalker" and "Fatal" from the Blade:Trinity score, but other than those, the score was crap. And he worked on BB's score? I've never heard of his involvement with that project before.

I really would've liked to seen John Powell get this gig. Oh, well.

Yep thats TERRIBLE news. Iron Man is going to have a GENERIC score. I don't think Debney would've been better. All Debney did for Spiderman 2 was the weak music for the Cake girl scene and half of the pizza delivery with Parker riding his moped. The Spiderman stuff was all Elfman. On Spidey 3 he just terribly adapted music Elfman already wrote. So that doesn't prove that he would be better suited for Iron Man. They should've got someone who never worked on a Marvel movie like Michael Giachinno, Don Davis, or Edward Shearmur. People that need work not Djawadji. Oh well, so Iron man won't be PERFECT on every dept.

He did more, but it was in such small increments that it is hard to narrow down what Debney contributed or not. In any case, Debney has a rich musical background and I was only using his work on the SPIDER-MAN films (as well as his powerful score for PASSION OF THE CHRIST) as examples.

The Spiderman stuff was all Elfman.
Hardly. Sure, a good chunk of it was Elfman's, or more accurately, spot work that he did for the first SPIDER-MAN shoehorned in at the last minute to replace his new cues, but Christopher Young also re-scored a lot of sequences which is partially (if not primarily) why he got the scoring gig for SPIDER-MAN 3.

In your opinion. The music for that film is so muddled, with so many people involved (from Young to Debney to Deborah Myer to Steve Bartek, etc etc) that it's hard to ascertained which parts are whose. That is a reason why Young could not get a score release for SPIDER-MAN 3 -- the amount of work that he did, compared to the work that was done by others, was so convoluted that he and Sony couldn't work out a deal. It was that muddled and bad.

Quote:
So that doesn't prove that he would be better suited for Iron Man.
Again, in your opinion. Debney's repertoire is extensive and ranges from several non-prolific films. Verses Djawadi, who's experience in motion picture scoring is ... slight. To say the least.

All of those would have been interesting choices. I do agree with another poster that I would have liked John Powell as well. Anyone would have been better than Djawadi, personally.

That has the music Elfman originally wrote for Spidey 2. Young only wrote the Demonstration and Runaway Train.Young only got picked to do spidey 3 because he BENDS over and Elfman backed out because he doesn't BEND over. I was talking about the Pizza man scene being all Elfman when spidey showed up. Don't get smart with me bc I will kick your a-- out of this world.

Okay, let's move it back on topic, people. lonzoe, that includes you. And Giacchino has worked on two superhero films: The Incredibles and Sky High, so he's had experience in the superhero genre. And Djawadi did do work on Batman Begins, he and Mel Wesson are accredited with "additional music" in both the end credits and the soundtrack album for BB (and he also did an interview where he does mention his work on BB). It's just not clear what parts he composed.

I really think Marvel and Paramount forced Favreau to pick Djawadi because any of the other RC people (Hans Zimmer, Steve Jablonsky, John Powell, etc.) probably aren't interested in doing IM and they want a BB-style score. There's the possibility that Djawadi wanted the gig and came up with an incredible theme for IM when he turned in his demo to the producers and director, but I still think the composer decision was taken out of Favreau's hands.

And for those of you who think Debney can't do incredible music, listen to his scores for the computer game "Lair" and Cutthroat Island (as well as the aforementioned Passion). He can do great scores if properly inspired. His work on the Spidey films aren't a great example of his work.

Djawadi's announcement just doesn't excite me, but maybe his work on IM will change my mind.

Yes and I have Elfman's original score from SPIDER-MAN 2, including the contributions made by Young. Your point?

Quote:
Young only wrote the Demonstration and Runaway Train.
He also wrote additional music that was rejected.

Yes, someone being collaborative equates to bending over. Right. Gotcha.

I'm not familar enough with Djawadi's work as a composer (not additional music) to form an opnion.

This movie has been fortunate enough to attract big names for both in front and behind the camera. So you'd expect that a more established person would get the composing gig but i guess that assumption was wrong.Maybe Favreau heard something in one of Djawadi's recent scores that he thought fit perfectly with Iron Man?

Danny Elfman was a NOBODY when he got the scoring gig on Batman 89, and yet look at how that turned out.

Haven't heard much from this RD fellow aside from his work on Blade: Trinity, so I'm willing to give him a chance. A combination of real orchestra and electronics could work quite well for Iron Man, as the character is a man in a robotic super-suit (just as long as the score is not too hip-hop/dance centric).

Elfman did great music for Beetlejuice pre-Batman.

I don't really have an opinion on this guy since I've never heard of him. I just hope he was the right man for the job is all. In Favreau I trust, so far.

So in other words Marvel couldn't get the big guns, so they had to settle with a little one? John Debney would have been a great choice.

Ramin Djawadi scored Open Season, in which Jon voiced a character.

Sure about that?

He was the frontman/writer/composer/producer for Oingo Boingo. He scored Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Back to School, Beetlejuice, Midnight Run, and Scrooged.

Elfman was a pretty well known guy before getting the Batman gig.

LOL!

That's exactly what this anouncement means. Hopefully it will work out for the better. But I'm not to thrilled they got frugal with the score for this film. I hope IM doesn't have a forgetable/unremarkable score.

I want this movie to be the best it possibly can.

I recently watched "Mr. Brooks," and I liked the score on it, it fit the film quite well. To my surprise, it is a Djawadi score. I have to say that renewed my hope for this film's score.

I like Steve Jablonski, he did music for Transformers and The Island. I think he could have made some great music for Iron-Man.

He had never done anything on the level of Batman before though. He had never scored a major superhero movie like that before. On the Batman Anthology special features, Elfman talked about how Jon Peters wasn't fully comfortable with him working on the film until he heard the Batman March played for him.

The point being that maybe Djawadi was picked because he was the man for the job, and that his lack of experience might not be a problem. People might be worried over nothing. If anything, I am more excited about a new talent getting a big gig, because then it ups the chances of us getting something fresh, as apposed to stuff we've heard a million times.
