Woman smoker worries about the effects of bug larvae in her cigarettes

Dr. Gately with the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department says Keeling shouldn't be in any danger.

"I don't know of any diseases it causes," says Dr. Gately. "Obviously, its just sort of an unpleasant surprise."

The female Cigarette Beetle produces about 100 eggs at a time. Those eggs hatch within six to ten days and are known for infesting homes. Keeling says there's no telling how many of the 100 eggs are in her cigarettes or even in her home.

"The Health Department told me there are things I need to do to get rid of the bugs because they are hard to get rid of," says Keeling.

Keeling wants USA Gold to take responsibility. The cigarette maker's parent company, Commonwealth Brands Incorporated, sent her a check for the carton and a letter of apology. Keeling says that doesn't make her any less angry.

"Even though I'm a smoker, it doesn't give anybody the right to not give me a bug free cigarette," she says.

Personally, I think that given all the other stuff in cigarettes, it's ridiculous to get upset over a few harmless bugs.
