(Reuters) - Batman's mask, Superman's cape and Catwoman's suit will be taking up permanent residence at the Smithsonian museum after being donated by Warner Bros. Pictures, the U.S. national museum said on Friday.

The iconic Batman mask and cowl worn by George Clooney in the 1997 "Batman & Robin" film was one of more than 30 movie items presented by Warner Bros. Chairman Barry Meyer to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

The movie items donated were from 13 films by the Hollywood studio between 1942 and 2005.

Late actor Christopher Reeve's Superman suit from 1983's "Superman III," Halle Berry's 2004 "Catwoman" costume and props from 2005's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" were among some of the memorabilia donated to the museum.

"Films are an integral part of this culture and of our daily lives, shaping how we perceive ourselves as Americans," the museum's director, John Gray, said in a statement. "The legacy of Warner Bros. is an important part of American history and these objects help us to tell that story."

The items will be part of the Smithsonian's 2013 Classic Film Festival, a three-day film retrospective starting Friday.

Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc.

Both that poster and the Forever one captured my imagination as a child. I still get very nostalgic when I see them.

I thought it was really clever how they had the separate character posters (that were actually very nicely put together) that created the main sheet poster that featured all of them.


The Kilmer Batman one with the signal and the Riddler stand out especially. I remember when theaters had them displayed in various forms all over the cinema.

I just watched this film last friday, and I don't know why, but I enjoy it thoroughly! It is always the same thing. It's like a not-so-good episode of the 60's series (which I love BTW), and I like to "Mystery Science Theater-it" while I watch it (much to the chagrin of everyone else). Also, extract Bruce's and Alfred's scenes and you have actual quality stuff, I kind of get choked up a bit.

The Alfred scenes in B&R are actually my favourite in any Batman media. Including Nolan's (yes, I have to add that since Nolan is considered a God by many ).

The basic march theme of Goldenthal is still a great piece of Batman music.


On another note - I remember as a a kid buying colouring books for Batman & Robin, and what I loved about them was that they were drawn in the style of B:TAS (which I was obsessed with, hence buying colouring books at 12 years old). Does anyone know if there are any scans online of these drawings? They looked great - a vast improvement over the actual movie.

Hmmm... the last of the old Bat-movies I watched during my recent marathon. The rep is justified, but it's over and done with. I'm willing to let bygones be bygones. Batman has been brought back to the big screen with a reasonable degree of self-respect. So as far as I'm concerned, Schumacher is off the hook. It's in the past and we can all just move on now.

B&R was just as bad the second time round, but the second time I was able to sit back and examine it without getting het up about everything. At least not too much. I mean what is with that giant statue when they do the big car jump sequence?! Why is it there? Why the hell would anyone put such gaudy monstrosity in the middle of a city? %$#@@#$ %$#@$ &^%$!!!!

Okay. Okay. I'm cool. I'll just focus on what I did like. Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy. She was rather good in my opinion. But Pfeiffer stole her thunder long before this movie. Still, a reasonable performance given the materiel.

Alfred's interactions with Bruce were very touching. This is why Micheal Gough owns Micheal Caine in my book. Caine's Alfred is far to boorish for my tastes, and it doesn't help that he brow beats Bruce at every ****ing turn. I just want that dude to STFU throughout the whole Nolan Trilogy. Whereas Gough's Alfred acts like a grown-up. Alfred is Bruce's dignified and sturdy emotional anchor all through the films... and that is exactly how Alfred should be. To hell with doing **** differently just because. Some things don't need to be changed. Ever. Rest in peace, Mr. Gough. We'll miss you terribly.

Oh, and Victor gets a good ending! I can't tell you how gratifying this was after reading Snyder's butchery of Freeze during Court of Owls. Why can't Victor just be rehabilitated and become an ally of Bruce and Batman?

He'd serve wonderfully as the first real example of rogue who genuinely turns over a new leaf. I'd love for this to become standard among the Bat-mythos. Twenty years after 'Heart of Ice' nothing has changed... at least for the better. Victor has so much potential as a converted ally of Bruce. I can think of so many places they can take his character. But nooooooooooo, the editors at DC cling to the past. Freeze's tragic villain shtick has worn very thin indeed.

How about a change, you morons? What would it hurt anyway? Batman has rogues coming out of his ears! There's a ****ing tonne of of them for gods sake. How about a new friend in the form of an old enemy? I'm pretty sure most Bat-fans wouldn't mind in the least. It will be something new and exciting, and thus something the hacks at DC know very little about. So I'm not holding my breath over here.

What scenes are the ones with him wearing the modified panther cowl? I never really noticed a difference at all.

Here is a side by side pic I did years ago of two publicity photos to make it easy for everyone to tell the difference.



He can be seen wearing it the most in the museum after saving the large pot that Robin crashed into. Other than that there are only a few frames that remain throughout the film. On the DVD extras he can be seen wearing it a lot while they're filming in the museum.

The whole suit was made for Val, but when Val didn't return George was cast in the last minute. Principal photography had already started when it was decided to sculpt a new cowl for him, the main reason they did was because the Panther cowl did not fit him comfortably around his throat and it affected his speech.

All the stuntmen wore the Clooney Panther cowl throughout the film, they didn't reshoot those scenes after the new Clooney cowl had been made because it was far more important and less expensive to just reshoot the scenes with George.

A repainted Clooney suit with a Clooney Panther cowl was later re-used for the OnStar Batman Commercials and the pilot episode of Birds of Prey.

But yes, that is/was also a Kilmer (Sonar) cowl. The entire Sonar suit was re-used from BF and modified into the Sonar Ice suit.
