They have done everything there is to do with the lighter side. Television, film. Big budget, not so big budget. They've made it as hokey, funny, colorful, whatever the case may be. There's nothing left especially when you bombed hardcore with the final one.

Dark is here to stay. That's where Batman belongs anyway. But we can still have some laughs with West or Clooney. Well, Georgie wasn't funny but Ahnold was!

I just don't know what you're basing your statements on. Look at the box office for Batman & Robin. The public turned on it and it was universally panned. I remember it. Nobody wanted Batman '66 in 1997. You called it a breath of fresh air? Hmm. Yeah. 'Fraid not.

Look, ultimately, Batman didn't suffer because of this movie. He's bigger than one movie flopping; he's a franchise. But to say Batman & Robin didn't make look Batman bad? It was the reason we didn't get a Batman film for 8 years until Nolan retooled it. You're just kinda ignoring the facts.

BTBATB was okay, but it was too camp. It was intended for children, like the old show. To see that as an example for something to work in a movie - God forbid.

A batman movie could be light hearted without being camp and still be loved by the audience. It needs to play with the sense of adventures, the gadgets, and the whole "batman is cool even without powers" stuff, just like the first volume of Batman Inc.

Because one movie didn't work doesn't mean it can't be done right.

Right, I didn't mean Batman & Robin all over again, with credit cards, ice puns and Bat-butts.

No, I don't think the movie made fun of Batman as a character. The world around him is silly, but Batman himself isn't portrayed that way. It's not like he's running around naked or stepping on banana peels. Had they made him into Robin's bumbling sidekick I would have hated the movie.

I have probably turned off two movies in my life. "Tron" and "From a Whisper to a Scream".

We don't know that.

7 Batman movies have been out since 1989.

And what is shown is, is that 5 of the darkest are better received movies. Returns had one fault that caused things to turn light hearted.
Forever wasn't a bad film at all. But it was still silly. Luckily, however, it had redeeming qualities in the shape of dramatic scenes between characters.
The music was light hearted in nature, the villains were more or less light hearted, bordering on campy...would've been a way better experience had they been a little more serious and darker, especially Jones.
Forever did make more money than Returns.
But it wasn't more loved by fans and critics than Returns. That movie did go too far, resulting in parents not taking their kids to go see it.

Batman should never be like Marvel's work - lighter hearted. Because it's not in the nature of the context of things.
He lives in a world of psychopaths. Batman isn't a well minded character. Characters in those stories are tragic and dramatic.
To make things just the slightest touch of light heart, it immediately loses all the dramatic weight that's very important to the Batman world. And when that happens, it turns people off. People know by now, Batman isn't meant to be light hearted.
It will always come off as campy in the minds of those who know of the old show and B&R.
It'll never escape that fate and WB could never afford to run that risk.

exactly. Also, the campy batman is a LARGE part of the mythos, and while it's far from his roots, there are some great stories full of ideas in those issues and episodes.

No, he's right. Batman isn't portrayed as inept or buffoonish a'la Inspector Gadget.

Exactly

For me, Keaton is the early 40's Batman, and Clooney is the 50's Batman (but they're supposed to be the same character).

I think Batman & Robin is a fun and entertaining movie...not because it's "so bad it's good". I mean, it's funny and all, but I when I watch it, I try to have the same mindset I had when I was a kid. "Oh no, Mr Freeze is going to destroy the world!" or "Wow, great action scenes. Batman is a badass".

I get why some hate it, but I don't think people should be ashamed to admit that they like Batman & Robin...it's harmless fun.

Harmless fun to us, but to them it's like seeing their dog get run over.

It's pretty silly...just like the movie.

Maybe they would have liked the movie better if Schumacher included a scene where Batman killed dogs with the batmobile...because it's darrrrk! And GRRRITTY!

Robin: "Holy Hot Dogs, Batman! Did you see how that bastard exploded? There's guts everywhere!"

Batman: "I hate dogs. They remind me of my dead parents. I hated my parents. That's why I killed them with a knife."

Robin: "Everything reminds you of your pare...huh, what are you talking about? You killed them?"

Batman: "Yeah. I wanted their money to buy hookers and drugs. Why do you think I dress up like this? It turns me on. Now shut up and kill that chihuahua with a batarang!"

Yeah, most people act like Batman And Robin was made to hurt them. I can understand how some were upset when it was released, but now, they should be able to appreciate how genuinely funny it is.
