Rumor: Taiwanese firms awarded PS3 Slim manufacturing contracts

Another possibly "frustrating" leak for Sony, word comes from our buddies at Joystiq Japan and Engadget Chinese that two Taiwanese manufacturing companies have been awarded contracts to build Sony's new streamlined PS3, affectionately known as the PS3 Slim. According to UDN.com, half of the orders have gone to Taiwanese group Foxconn, while the other half has gone to Pegatron. The units are expected to start shipping in early July "to cope with expected summer vacation demands."

The news has a ring of truth to it, given that the two firms have manufactured the original PS3. The timing also makes sense, as Japan actually buys most of its game consoles during the summer vacation period (as opposed to the winter holidays in the west). Still, all of this info comes from anonymous sources, so take it with a very hearty helping of salt.

Assuming the news is true, it would mesh well with the PS3 Slim rumors we've heard so far, most notably that Ars Technica expected the units to hit the market in August or September. Add this to the string of rumors and leaks -- even some purported images of the unit itself -- and the PS3 Slim looks like it could be hitting the ground sooner rather than later.

I wish they would just announce whether this is real or not already, and talk about a price cut. If no price cut is coming, then the new Best Buy bundle is very tempting, but I keep holding off because this Slim seems like a very real possibility. Either way they are causing me to not give them money sooner.

I like the current Ps3. It's a tank, and I love it.

It is not a wise idea to talk about a price cut until they are ready to make a price cut. To a lesser degree the same goes for a new model of the system. The minute Sony does that, sales of their current PS3s will slow down as people wait for the confirmed price cut

I wish they would have done this earlier. I should have known this was coming tho. Sony cant stick to its original concept, with anything.

I agree. I actually prefer the look of the bigger one, which is nice since I already own that one.

The "tank" (we should totally refer to that model as that from now on) is better looking, but the price is what will (should) give Sony the kick in the pants it needs

I don't understand your logic though. Your saying Sony shouldn't be even attempting to improve their products and making them more affordable?? Microsoft has been doing different models and with a failure rate that still lurks. When you are in a console war you have to put together the console in the best way way you can to meet the deadlines you have as a company to even have a chance to be in the game as a contender. I don't think any console in the past 10-15 years has been perfection at launch really. There is always going to be improvements until the next console comes around.

The thickness doesn't really concern me--the price drop, however, does make me a lil' wet. And it's coming out in October? I know what I'm asking for this Christmas then.

I wonder if one could trade in their tank version to get a slim version at Gamestop?

I doubt they'll have full trade one for the other deal, but they'll probably have a deal that if you trade your tank for a slim you'll get extra credit or something

Hmm, good, because me and the roomie would be getting a slimmer model with the same functionality, but with more storage space than the model we got.
