One thing I do like about the Empire review is that it addresses what seems to be an inherent problem with a lot of these comic book movies. They have to make them all "origin" films, and the origin almost feels obligatory, the movies sometimes run out of steam early, and its like we can't get all the really good action until the second film.
It does ask a good question, why can't these movies start without origins and the characters fully formed ever?

Yeah that seems to be brought up in a couple of reviews, saying now that we know about him the sequel should be much better.

Here's the positive review someone posted in the other review thread from the Hollywood Reporter.

I'll say the positive reviews are encouraging, and it at least seems to show we don't have another Fantastic Four or Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer, Punisher, Daredevil, or Elektra on our hands.

A shame really that certain reviewers want a movie which begins with action, and ends with action. People expect a movie with little background ... damn shame.
When a movie has too much backstory, you get reviews like "too much talking, more action". When a movie has no backstory, you get reviews like "too much action, no story". So unfair ![]() 80% of all those reviews are positive anyway |

Not a review but rather a site to keep an eye on for reviews:
http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/ironman But no reviews in there yet. And I might as well put it's competition in there as well: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/iron_man/ 83% fresh so far.

It's not getting backstory that's the problem. Its just that there seems to be this feeling of, "we have to do the backstory now to get it out of the way and only do the really good stuff in the sequel". Not necessarily more action or what not, but just the more interesting story. Sometimes it just feels like the story limits itself by having to tell the origin.
The Hulk was really as bad of an origin movie as possible for that franchise. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/iron_man/ That's only 83% fresh with 6 reviews counted though .

I usually ignore the critics in my area. They gave the Lord of the Rings movies lousy ratings and I actually liked them. Or my favorite part is when they watch a movie with an actor that they don't like and it has a really good story and great acting but they give it a bad grade because they just dont like the actor.

What does critics know? Kubrick's 2001 was TOTALLED at the time of its release. CITIZEN KANE was lambasted to death at the time of its release and stayed that way for DECADES until it was rediscovered and touted with the (overblown) title of Best Movie of All Time.

Well Ebert & Roeper will have their say at 6pm tonight. I think they'll give it thumbs up.

I'm going to be off topic for this one time in this thread, has anyone here been mad enough about a lame negative review about a comic book movie made by a movie critic that they had to write them an email about it and went through with it??
