It's very comparable, both are wildly popular in the western world as well as Japan (although Naruto isnt THAT popular in japan), however both of them are over-rated, at least DBZ was a pinnacle in shonen manga. Naruto just imitates others, In fact Naruto is pretty much a rip off of Hunter Hunter. In terms of style and quality, i think One Piece is the most inspired by DBZ, however it's popularity is unrivaled in japan (unlike america where its shoddily ripped apart by the worse dub ever) but in my opinion, and as it seems, the opinion of most japanese. It has a superior story and character development than both naruto and DBZ.
so yes, Naruto is the next DBZ, overated, overhyped trash.

the thing about naruto that is better than dragonball was that... in naruto, u never truly know who is the strongest... in dragonball everybody knew who was the strongest and it was always the bad guy... in naruto... everything is so very mysterious, which is a great great thing.

Personally, I think it is extremely overhyped. I personally feel that Dragonball Z is the pinnacle of shonen anime, the one every other anime tries to compare to. There are fights in Naruto which are, occasionally, shot for shot copies of DBZ fights. When all is said and done, Naruto isn't as great as everyone says it is. In Japan, people understand it's not all that great, and have moved on. Even in Japan, DBZ is more popular than Naruto, as it should be. But, unfortunately, in the states, I feel it is the next DBZ in terms of sheer "recruitment" of new anime fans. |

honestly, idk what people see in the Naruto series(possibly because i never got into the Manga, just watched the anime). i didn't watch the English dub, because the voices annoyed me to no end. i just thought it dragged on. it was like watching The get backers, for ~150 episodes, and without the fun Characters.

Ratings-wise, it isn't now. But before the filler, it was a huge success in Japan. The fillers killed the ratings with the horrible animation and story lines. A year's worth of filler will kill any series. I think the only series, recently, that's done filler seasons properly is Bleach. It was one continuous storyline, with a decent animation crew. Naruto is more a rip off of DB than hunterxhunter. Kishimoto has stated on numerous occassions that he was heavily influenced by the DB manga.

My exposure to Naruto is very limited (up until Itachi first hit the scene in volume 18 or 19 of the Viz graphic novels), but it seems like the series took some concepts--natural energy, toilet humor, optimistic protagonist, moody rival--and blended them with a tighter plot.
But for myself, there will never be another Dragon Ball. I will say that Naruto does seem to have a better plot, but Dragon Ball I have more memories attached to.

true but that doesnt excuse the repetition and lackluster cliched story telling. I mean come on... How many freakin shounen anime have to have a filler tournament arc?

All of them. Or it wouldn't be using a traditional shounen-manga formula.

I don't know what you mean by filler, but DB actually started that trend. If anything, you should ask, "why does every shonen copy DB's formula of throwing a tournament in their series?"

In DB, that was the original primary focus, much like Baki the Grappler is a series based around winning tournaments. So I wouldn't say it was useless in DB's sense, in which DB's case, the original point of the series was to become strong enough to win the next budokai tournament. DBZ is where that changed, however, but then again, there were only two canon tournaments in DBZ, one of which wasn't really a tournament but a genetic creatures ego trip.
