I like pacing in Naruto alot more than DB/DBZ...Naruto is more character driven than DB/DBZ....DB/DBZ is more well known but I think Naruto is better

I think One Piece is story wise more like dragon ball, the battles are more drastic, the funny thing is, Dragon Ball also had influences from western culture, not only japanese, One Piece did the same with the Pirates and brought some European influences, Naruto doesn't, it only takes elements from the japanese culture.
Now what i find stranger is that One Piece takes a lot of elements from other countries and is more popular in japan than naruto, while Naruto is 100% japanese and is more popular than One Piece in the USA and other countries. |

One Piece has surpassed DBZ in popularity in Japan.... Naruto is still going strong and I still believe will surpass DBZ in popularity before its said and done.

don't forget how old dbz is compared to naruto, that has something to do with waining popularity. i never could watch naruto, just seemed to kiddie to me. so i couldn't really say if it is the new dbz. for me db/dbz was good to watch. i had to buy the japanese ones from ebay a long time ago when they hadn't even shown all of season 1 here in the US. i also got the movies on vhs, those were really good.i got to see the raw unedited dbz, bloody and perverted, lol. the cleaned up one was still fun to watch but if you never saw the real dbz, then you might be in for a surprise.

Not going to bother reading the thread.
The answer is that it's overhyped. |

Hmmm I wouldn't goes as far as to call it the next Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball pretty much started the anime epic battle craze as we know it. Naruto may have a tighter plot. But I enjoy the Dragon Ball manga more than Naruto manga any day. Naruto is good, but no THAT good.

I don't think it's a phenomenon, it started really good, lasted that way until the 87 episodes of fillers (held some fun stuff, some boring stuff) then started strong again until Sai decided to go with Orochimaru, then it waved up and down irregularly between bad and enjoyable

Sai followed Orochimaru and Kabuto for a few episodes before he was caught and actually befriended them

Never understood why BallZ gets such a pass with fans. It's very much horrible mediocre fan fiction when it's at it's best.

if that is true let me ask you this. how many of you have seen and liked db or dbz. also note that the 2 dragonball series i mentioned are quite different from each other. so you get 2 different shows in one universe. and how many of you watch naruto and like it?
for me i just can't watch naruto, can't get into it.

I loved DBZ to death. I still watch it sometimes. Now, I love the Naruto series, and it's also 2 series: Naruto and Naruto Shippuden, with the later being more serious, imo.
Maybe you didn't watch it from the first episode. Some people I've seen don't like the show, but they never watched it as it was intended. From the beginning. Also, in my personal opinion, Naruto has already surpassed the Dragon Ball series. It has more character development and more interesting fights. Not to mention a more thought out plot. I enjoyed the fights in DBZ, but watching them again, it seems they're all almost the same.

I think naruto is way better than dbz in terms of characters and plot. Yea the plot of naruto is up and down but dbz tends to be boring and repetitive. I dont care how iconic it is , dbz is far from the best.

i notice you guys didn't mention db, just keep saying dbz, are you lumping them together? or have you not seen db completely. dragonball is actually very funny and more of an adventure show, i really like it. dbz is more sci fi with aliens and space. i also really like that he characters grow up and have kids themselves.
to answer your question i did try to watch naruto from the first episode, i always watch a couple to see if i like a show. starting from the beginning. it just seemed to kiddie to me and wasn't digging it.

Hmmm, I don't really see how it is kiddie. There are pretty sad and serious themes and the action is quite mature. Perhaps you watched the censored version? Did you watch it with the japanese dub?
I think you should go for more. I didn't become a fan of Naruto with the first episodes. You should watch at least until the Chunnin Exam seasons, which is when it really gets interesting and have some intense battles. If you don't like the show until this point...then I think you can let go.

It's far from kiddie.
Though it does have those traditional anime aspects to it
