Yea, he's not a bad choice at all. Think he could be great. Always have a tough time with casting Strange.

Depp? DiCaprio? Please, no "pretty boys" or baby faces for Dr. Strange. We've seen enough of that in most Marvel actors, which is fine, but I think that member, Iron Fist's pic on page 12 "says" it all -- Tall (lanky), dark hair on face and head, and a Vincent Price type long (not round) head. A mature, maybe even grizzled look, with a touch of grey.
P.S they should start him out as a middle aged man in his Avengers prime, then get a younger actor for the origin story

what about Stephen Moyer? (i always liked how people automatically pick someone with a pre-existing mustache/goatee/long hair for a role)

Hypothetically, if David Tennant was hired, it would be a huge coup, fans would crazy. It'd be like casting Nathan Fillion in...anything :P

What's so bad about Depp, is he a lazy choice solely because he is the obvious choice?

Of all the actors mentioned he's the only one I can imagine shouting "By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth!" and it coming out good.

He has enough range to be serious yet completely eccentric while remaining completely believable from one end to another.

At this point, I'm more interested to see who the director will be instead of which actor will play Doctor Strange. This is a huge pipe dream, but I really want Guillermo del Toro for this.

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

These clips more than prove how awesomely capable Tennant would be with heavy drama, where he's rockin' some heavy Hamlet from the Bard. And anyone who's ever watched Who knows he's more than capable of the more eccentric side of things.

Combine all that with this picture and it just fits.

I take my casting seriously, but I've never had this much conviction for my idea how perfect a certain actor would be for a role. Tennant all the way.

So after posting this twice, obviously you want your opinion heard, so I'll give you a reply. The most important thing in ANY of these Marvel films is putting the characters first. Having a huge name like Depp would distract from the character completely and utterly, in the same way that having Brad Pitt as Thor would have. That's why Marvel cast people like Evans and Hemsworth, not A-Listers.

oh it's back on, lol

Michael Sheen would be good. that pic of tennant looks like sheen in underworld so you are subconsciously picking Sheen you know you are.

Yeah, Michael Sheen would be great!

If we needed to recast a young Howard Stark...

Look, Sheen is a great actor and all, but he is a bit stiff, he doesn't scream the eccentricity that Tennant does, Tennant is a much better character actor.

Hmm, most likely won't get it for the same reason Skarrsgard didn't get Thor. Too well known as an already established character on a hit series. It detracts from just seeing the character rather than the actor. It's the same reason Depp shouldn't get it.

Oh and I liked whoever suggested Del Toro as director. Yeah, that could seriously work.

I agree that Depp shouldn't be Doc Strange, too, but not for the fact that he's an A-list actor.

I don't get the argument that A-listers will "detract" from the roles. Granted, that *seems* to be Marvel's strategy (although they sure as hell don't have any qualms about casting A-listers in villain and supporting roles), but how THEE hell would getting marquee all-stars hurt the movie's box office...???

Marvel's films are making *decent* box office, but if they started casting superstars in the lead roles, they could be looking at b.o. that's a lot closer to Batman and Spidey (or better).

If I recall correctly that was Guillermo himself. He said in an interview ages ago that he was really interested in doing a Dr. Strange movie.
Of course he is interested in doing quiet a few movies so I don't actually see that happen.

But they've also cast Robert Downey Jr and Edward Norton. Downey certainly wasn't an A-lister at the time but he was a very well known, Oscar nominated actor. In fact, Downey and Depp both had/have similar careers. Both bad boys in the 90's who did very edgy, critically acclaimed work. Pirates was Depp's blockbuster breakthrough as was Iron Man for Downey.

This just seems to be the way in which casting superhero films has historically worked best, going all the way back to 1978. You get someone who is either virtually unknown but has exactly what it takes to nail the role(Hemsworth, Reeves, etc.) or someone who isn't unknown but isn't huge nor is already associated in the public's mind with another popular character/franchise (Downey Jr., Evans, Bale, MacGuire, Norton, etc.).

Quote:
Granted, that *seems* to be Marvel's strategy
That's why we should think about casting the way they have shown they think about casting, if trying to guess who they'll pick is what you want to accomplish.

Again this trend goes all the way back to 1978.

It might not hurt the box office as much as it could hurt the movie and the property. They don't want these properties to turn out like Pirates of the Caribbean. With those, it's the Johnny Depp show and w/o him the movies wouldn't earn beans. So de-facto, Depp is in charge of that franchise. Marvel wants to be in charge of their character's franchises.

If he wanted to then I'd say sign him up. But for an alternative choice, I'd suggest someone like Neil Burger.

I'll throw another casting choice in the hat:

Rufus Sewell

The problem with choices like Liam Nesson and Viggo Mortensen is that, athough they are good actors, they are a little to WASPy for me. Strange should be a little more mediterranean.
