I had no idea what this flick was about when I went to the theater.
From start to finish I was smiling. Great flick!

Awesome Re: Whedon's Moving to Cabin in the Woods

Tons of info revealed in the visual companion.

Io9 has highlights.

Including the identity of Kevin!

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Also, one of Goddard's favorite monsters was Kevin, a sweet-looking guy who seemed like he might work at Best Buy — until he dismembers people

This thread got me interested in the movie, so I went and saw it tonight.

All I can say is that this movie was pretty damn cool. I have to admit that most of the satire flew past me because I turned my brain off, as I usually do for horror-type movies. (Ok so I was expecting a brain-dead horror flick with gore, nudity, etc. I wasn't really expecting needing to actually pay attention to the dialog and details.) I feel like I should see the movie a 2nd time now so I can catch the satire I missed the 1st time.

I admit I wanted more gore and sex/nudity (hey come on, they're horror-movie staples!), but aside from that the movie blew away my expectations and typical plot twists. I also want a prequel now dammit! I want more backstory on the monsters and where/how they came from!

I did have a few issues with the movie, like:

1.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Like The Hunger Games in which animals were spawned in the game world, how were the monsters spawned into this movie's real-world? That missing detail bothered me.

2.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
I had a hard time suspending my belief when it came to the underground lab being able to contain a variety of monster types - with some of them obviously being very destructive.

3.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
And because of the loose similarity to The Hunger Games (as in a remote lab controlling a closed real-world-like environment), I kept thinking that the monsters were actually sci-fi inventions of some sort, like robots, not flesh & bone monsters. It sorta took me out of the movie. I thought the zombies were robots at first.

4.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
For me the entire 3rd act felt like it would end the movie at any time. I mean, there were so many scenes during the whole part in the underground lab that felt like the movie could've ended on any one of them - like the reveal of all the monster prison-cubes, or the System Purge moment, etc. With the continual climactic scenes, I was half-expecting the movie to end earlier than it did.

5.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Sigourney Weaver totally took me out of the movie, though I'm not really sure why. I agree with someone else who thought that the Xenomorphs should have been in the movie - that would've been awesome.

6. I wanted more gore and sex/nudity. Is that really too much to ask?

7.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
The references to "the ancient ones" (or something like that) made me think of Cthulhu, which would've been an awesome addition IMO.

My favorite parts in the movie by far were:

1.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
The elevator-hallway scene following the "System Purge" and the monsters unleashed hell. Damn. Though it felt really video-gamey (reminded me of FEAR and Half-Life) it was also totally bad-ass.

2.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Related to #1 above, the Uber-King Cobra, along with Buzzsaw-Head, Teeth-Head Ballerina, and the Alma (from FEAR)-like girl in the hallway. Man there were so many film and game references that I can't wait until this movie's on Blu-Ray/DVD so I can pause and see them all.

2.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
The virgin-girl fighting the bear-trap zombie on the lake deck, cut in with the video of her from the lab while everyone was partying. I don't know about anyone else but I was trying to watch that fight on the lab's video monitors instead of listening to the lab employees talk. Something about that was hilarious at the same time and made me feel like the director did that on purpose. That fight also went on a lot longer than I thought it would, which added to the hilarity.

Well, Scream had a very different intent.

They focused primarily on slasher films and being meta in the real world. Cabin in the Woods analyzes the entire genre and the process of making them.

Not knowing every little detail was part of the point and the charm of the movie. It was never really important where the nightmares came from and how everything was constructed.

Let's remember that this movie was made way before The Hunger Games and Paul were probably in production...

I can only assume that the movie would've been even better received if it were released at its original release date.

The monsters were said to have been provided by the old gods. I guess the exchange is that the gods would stop terrorizing us if we keep them sated and entertained, and they provide the tools to do so. The monsters are mentioned as being from the "old world". I took this to mean that all the monsters we dream up and fear actually existed at one time, the stories based on things we had to do deal with on regular basis. The modern world is able to exist however because of the ritual set up. The ritual as been necessary as long as there has been civilization (hence all the images during the credits). I also thought that the zombies might be robots at first. When they're revealed to be actual zombies, but still sent out by the company, I was really surprised.

Your mention of the several possible ending points I full agree with, but that's what I liked about it so much. Everytime they did something interesting and you thought "oh that's what this movie is actually about" or "well, I guess that's that" they then went on and escalated it even further.

The part when they're in the elavator and the camera zooms out to reveal the hundreds of monster containing cubes, it felt like an end reveal.

The fact then that the film continues on and then there's the whole rampage again is amazing, and it feels like the movie could end with the rampage, with the lab workers being destroyed by the monsters as an interesting ending.

but then the film continues still, and ends the way it ends, which I full never expected.

Astounding.

Doubtful depending on when Whedon and Goddard wrote Cabin. I haven't seen the movie so I have no idea how evil or messed up in the head Kevin actually is though.

Sorry, who is Kevin? Which character are you referring to? I saw it last night and loved it, but some of the stuff towards the end was so fast that I probably missed a dozen things.

Edit: I just looked up the wikipedia page and I see Kevin is on the white board. Maybe it's a reference to Elijah Wood's character in Sin City? He was a pretty twisted f**k.

I can't wait for the DVD to see the screenshots of all the monsters, (of course, if anyone has a bootleg & can grab images off that, I don't think anyone on here will complain, as long as they're "covered up" under a spoiler tag!)

Saw this tonight and it was not what I was expecting, but in a totally good way, the movie was brilliant, I was laughing out loud at some parts, jumping out of my seat in others while also on the edge of it, the film had everything, and last 20 mins were just a riot, trying to spot everything, so much imagination and innovation, great little movie, big props to Whedon, Goddard and everyone else involved.

8/10

In that link about the visual guide I posted earlier they address who Kevin was, Goddard said he was one of his favorite monsters or whatever, but I'm pretty sure it was on the list of things cut from the movie.

Kevin is this really friendly Best Buy employee who is really helpful until he decides to cheerfully murder people.

The visual guide that went on sale has pictures and concept art for all of the monsters, also a bunch of the stuff from the basement.

I hope they explain that roll of film Marty was holding.

No, but there was that "Robot Chicken" sketch that parodied "The Giving Tree" where the tree, (voiced by Hulk Hogan), referred the kid to go to another tree for the branches/wood/leaves, that turned out to be a "molesting tree". Since Whedon has been featured in a couple of Robot Chicken's sketches, I'm sure that's where he got it.
