Default Digital TV Conversion:Good Idea or the beginning of the end?

Just my opinion, but with Digital TV, the government can take over the TVs with just the push of a button, the way it is now, they have to wait for the networks to do it.

What are your opinions?

Thanks kind of dangerous considering it could be overrided by an outside source.

I highly doubt the government converted the signals from analog to digital simply so they can overtake our televisions with propaganda...

"The Outer Limits" is fiction, so I don't see how it applies here.

Are you talking about the Over-the-air Analog signal shut-off coming in February?

If so, you realllllllly don't know what that entails, do you?

All I know is I don't have to buy a new TV because my cable service will do change the signal for me.

The ONLY people that will be effected in February are those people who are getting TV channels via antennae.

If you're getting your cable from a cable line, any TV will work will work just fine.

The government will not suddenly have some sort of killswitch on our tvs, or anything ridiclous like that, and nobody getting cable through a cable line will have to get any special boxes for their tvs to work.

It's soooooo much simpler of a situation than people (and those people trying to scare you into buying a box) make it out to be.

I wouldn't weep, in fact if that's the case then the government can feel free to take over my television any day.

I don't understand the need for a nation-wide switch.

Let's put it into perspective:
An old retired couple on a limited income suddenly need to pay more money to the cable company just to watch their favorite television shows, despite the fact that their antenna has worked fine for years.

Now, I'm just a teenager and I don't pay the bills in my house, nor do I really know much about cable and television access, but that's my perspective on things.

But if they got a coupon from the federal government, they would have received a digital converter box for a very small amount of money. If they watched the local news, they probably would have noticed a message at the bottom of the screen giving them all the information they would need. It's been running here in DC since April, and it ran all summer when I returned home to NY. All they would pay for is a digital converter box, and that's it.

That old couple might appreciate the extra allowance for emergency frequencies that will be able to be used over the air that will be a result of shutting off the analog tv signals over the air. Analog over-the-air shut-off means better communication for Police, Firemen, and Rescue Squads.

And really, if they were getting their TV signals for free with an antennae, they were probably just getting their local stations. And you can usually get those local stations for very cheap through a cable company. Usually about $20/mo.
