Default Some artistic devices that annoy me.

Now, mind you, this is just my opinion. If you come to defend these, don't feel the need to attack me.
1. Two-Face looking mutated rather than scarred. Too often his left side is drawn all green or just warped-but not looking at all like he's been burned.
2. Spider-Man's lenses expanding & contracting. I understand that the intention is to show emotion, but a lot of artists go too far with it, to where he looks like Deadpool. His mask can't do that!
3. Wolverine's claws looking either paper-thin or like knitting needles. There's supposed to be a bone in there!
4. Hulk with a tiny waist. He didn't earn the muscles. They just grew.
5. Ghost Rider looking muscular. He has no flesh. I have seen panels where he had detailed, defined muscles. Why?
6. Wonder Woman-or any female character with exposed cleavage and/or shoulders-looking like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. Be somewhat practical, huh?
7. Overuse of blue highlights on black costumes. I don't think I can overemphasize how wrong this is.

I hate it when the Thing's size varies from panel to panel. Issue to issue. Artist to artist.

I hate it when everyone isn't drawn exactly the same in every comic, regardless of who's drawing them. Man, that burns me up. It's like they're just drawing s*** the way they think it should look instead of the way it should look. Who do these arrogant bastards think they are?

Originally, there wasn't. When he first started out, the implication was that the claws were artificial implants. They "revealed" that it was a part of his skeleton after his adimantium was removed because they didn't want him to loose his claws, which were an iconic look at that point.

Yeah, I've never been able to figure why Wonder Woman isn't afforded the basic costume functionality of Xena: Warrior Princess.

A couple of shoulder-straps, this is really asking so much?

Can we also say the same of the Hulk?
One minute he takes up half the page, the next he's maybe 7 feet.

I can't buy that. Especially in the Dan Ketch era, where he wasn't even wearing the same clothes once he changed. No flesh means no flesh. Especially if the costume consists of a leather jacket & jeans-then we shouldn't see detailed muscles anyway.

I'm aware of that. But they're still being drawn that way. And I didn't like the paper-thin claws even then. A lot of artists made it look like he had ninja swords on his hands.

8. Spider-Man's webbing looking like fishnets. One of the few good things that came out of Todd McFarlane's run is that it inspired other Spidey-artists to try harder & make the webs look more like webs. That said, every now & then I still see fishnet webbing. BTW-this also goes for his infamous "armpit webbing"; if you're gonna draw it, make it look like the webs on the rest of his costume. Is that too much to ask?

I've always loved that aspect, gives him more of a cartoony look, and helps play up the light-hearted atmosphere Spidey books (should) have.

9. Stop using pouches to fill a costume (mostly directed towards Liefeld).

If they have a flipping pouch I wanna see them use it.

1) which i heard somewhere god knows where long time ago! that the hellfire which engulfs him fills out the uniform in what whatever manner he wants and he chooses to fill out the jacket and jeans or
2) its a comic book and anything is possible in comics and it looks way cooler to have a muscle bound leather wearing fire headed demon skeleton than a bony skinny naked demon skeleton riding a cycle with wheels on fire....
personally i buy #2.
.... and i am not even touching that cleavage thing. i would stop buying comics if not for that hehe

Now I'm pissed that I didn't post this one. But gratuitous pouches have got to go. I've seen pouches on Iron Man, for Stan's sake! I would absolutely love to see how the hell he would open up one of those pouches, much less pull anything out of it. And why would he need to, anyway?!?! What could he possibly carry? Batteries?

It's often overdone. Slight size deviations I could live with. Blinking just makes no sense. He shouldn't look like Felix the Cat in one panel & Spawn the next. It's a mask. If they did that w/the symbiote it would make more sense. Not a piece of fabric with plastic lenses mounted on it.

I'm not saying that the jacket & jeans have to hang off of him. I'm saying we shouldn't see detailed muscles, w/sinews & veins & other physical attributes that he doesn't have.

And quite frankly, he doesn't need them. A fiery skull is intimidating enough. You can put that on top of Paris Hilton's physique & it'll be scary.

But, like Cyclops, Scarlet Spider & the others we're going after, we've never seen him utilize them.

10. Overuse of shading. Sometimes it's just carried too far, & you get a really shoddy image.

It is a mask, but comic books aren't the epitome of realism. It's a minor detail, and one that serves the purpose of allowing us to know the expression behind the mask.
